I certainly cannot blame him.

I certainly get his point of view, American cars are by and large pretty thrashy and ancient. But there's some appeal to them - they are cheap, offer lots of power for the buck and they certainly have character. Even though I don't like American cars at all high-powered cars like the Z06 or even the 300C SRT-8 are real tempting prepositions.
