Jaguar Land Rover tries to get BMW/VW engines

For @#$%'s sake, why is Ford's EcoBoost engines dangerous?

Not trying to be devil's advocate but ...

There was an issue last year in US market with one of the EcoBoost engines. Not sure it's as serious as Kilcrohane implies but there was / is an issue.

The EcoBoost engine has been widely reported as going into “limp mode” when the charged air cooler builds up humidity and this humidity gets sucked into the engine. When this event occurs, computers in the truck restrict the engines performance to negate damage from occurring Unfortunately, this limp mode has the tendency to happen, for some, at the worst time like trying to pass another vehicle or merging on the interstate. Having a non-responsive vehicle during these driving events can cause serious injury to the driver or at the very least some shaky nerves.

Ford has been sued over issues with its much ballyhooed EcoBoost engine that in certain driving situations can go into “limp mode” causing shuddering and loss of power. This dangerous issue has all the makings of a class-action lawsuit and recall.

Yes, that's what Kilcro is talking about and YES it is indeed ****in dangerous.

If an engine behaves in this way, yes it is dangerous. The subjective part is the frequency of occurrence of this problem and whether the EcoBoost engines as a WHOLE are dangerous. That's the bit that @Kilcrohane seems get confused over. Not just with this but with everything he talks about. There is always some element of truth in what he says, but then he mixes that up with paranoia, emotion, and hyperbole.

Has there been issues with Ford EcoBoost engines? Yes. Does that mean the engine is flat out "dangerous"? No.

I agree. I'd still get an Ecoboost if they make sure the problem was fixed.
They are pretty decent engines but lack of power is one of my worst nightmares...

I've suffered limp mode twice, both times in an Audi. Of course it has the potential to be dangerous but there has been numerous makes that have suffered such an issue and to single one out is typical Kilcrohane. I'm sure if we did enough poking Mercedes will have had their fair share of issues that could be classed as dangerous.

I've been saying for ages, Kilcrohane has a screw loose, but nobody is listening.

Here's the deal:

When I first read K's claim that EcoBoost engines are dangerous, I was outraged. I thought that this has to be amongst his craziest claims, thus my enraged response.

Then I see EnI's very informative post - the only one, if I may say, that shed some light on what K meant. And a post that proves that K is kind of right here.

Honestly, K has something to contribute quite many times here, yet most of them, you need to read between the lines. Sometimes this is fun, sometimes its frustrating. Do I wish that he would just go ahead and mention the fact, without dressing it with words that picture it like being more fatal than WWII? Yes. Do I prefer not finding out something, over finding it out the hard way? No.

Going one step further while also playing the devil's advocate, I find it annoying that JLR, a supposed upscale manufacturer, when in need to outsource an engine, chose one with a known serious issue, with lawsuits pending, over any other problem-free engine.

Why were so many people in the dark about the supposed "dangerous" EcoBoost engine? If it was that big of a deal do you not think it would be major news? You weren't even aware of the issue. Neither was I. The fact there's a lawsuit doesn't mean anything. I love America but they file lawsuits if somebody so much as looks at you the wrong way.

The only reason @Klicrohane describes the whole of the EcoBoost range of engines as dangerous is because of JLR's utilisation of them. If it was MB using the engine do you think he'd describe it as dangerous?

If Kilcrohane just presented "facts" without any hyperbole and emotion he would be a credible source. Unfortunately his sheer hatred and complete contempt for anything JLR/British etc means you have to question every single thing he says.

EDIT: And he said "dreadful". What exactly is dreadful about the EcoBoost engine?! It's great! It's just the JLR association. Pure and simple.

That is correct. Both annoying and correct.

Am I not correct in thinking McDonalds had a lawsuit filed against them for not informing a customer their coffee was hot when they spilled it on themselves.

You need to understand the American Justice system, it isn't like most others.

Ask yourselves why is this solely a US problem and why hasn't it been reported on the news there and why have we heard nothing else where in the world?

While this is not a thread to discuss the US and EU justice systems, think of this: Why was NHTSA the first to enforce a recall on that MINI engine that had issues with the camshaft chain tensioner, and while MINI accepted that there was a problem, no cars have been recalled in Europe?

more importantly, which version, is it all Ecoboost engine types or just a single type. Is it the version which JLR and Volvo use?

Nope.
The only problematic engine is / was the V6 EcoBoost engine, while JLR (and Volvo?) only use I4 EcoBoost engines, while V6 engines are still based on old Duratec V6 engine.

Like the Pre-Safe auto-brake system failing to stop on time in the W221 and the first gen. A-Class not able to take a single corner without ending up on it's roof? :D

So yet again this is a non issue that is used to beat up on JLR. Kilcrohane's mix of fantasy and outright lies to portray JLR in a bad light is getting absurd.
