Beats me. In my office alone I don't know of anyone who has an Android, so I can't really ask for smartphone advice.

I'm on a 6s but I kind of want a 10 too. Lets see what the carriers are going to offer. No way I'm going to buy one full price, as it's near 1200 euros in Hollands. Or better put, roughly as much as a Macbook Pro.

iMessage's dominance in North America is equivalent to Whatsapp's dominance in the rest of the world. On Whatsapp, when you communicate with another person, there is no indication of what kind of device the person on the other end is using and you're able to see when the message has been read/delivered.
On iMessage, if the other person is on a non-iOS device, it displays green chat bubbles instead of blue chat bubbles. With green chat bubbles there's no delivery/seen reports nor can you add people to group chats/facetime with them which makes them uncool. This is definitely a first world problem, but it has become a meme of sorts and the millennials love eating that up in spades. iMessage/Facetime is actually a very strong reason why many people refuse to switch to Android.
Google is also partially to blame because of their shotgun approach to building messaging apps - build a dozen of them and hope that one of them sticks. As a result, people no longer buy into google messaging apps anymore. In the last decade google has built google chat, Gtalk, google messenger, Google Plus, Google Hangouts, Inbox, Duo, Allo and while functionally great, all have failed to gain traction.

Apple has definitely been late with adding many features to their phones but in some key areas (e.g. silicon design) they are at least 2 years ahead of everyone else in the industry. The processing power on the new A11 Chip is on par with a full blown Intel Core i5 on a 13" Macbook Pro.

...............I streamed it live from their YouTube channel - though there was a few seconds delay compared with streaming on their website.

Yeah did the same, i thought it was their channel because of the misleading name but it was an indian guy rebroadcasting, he was speaking at the beginning of the broadcast until everyone told to stfu.

My current 24 month phone plan ends next month and I was called this week about upgrading. For the first time in ages my girlfriend and I have decided not to upgrade.
We both bought the S6 Edge Plus and pay £42/month. The equivalent phone today is an S8+ or iPhone 8+ and both are about £62/month for a similar plan with 8-10GB/Month. That's a 47% increase in cost in just 2 years.
I've seen the S8+, it's pretty but technologically it's not a big leap from the S6 which already had OLED and a screen that curves around the side. Unfortunately the iPhone 8 is overpriced without OLED. I bought and iPad Pro this week and it's fantastic but videos, especially of dark car interiors look pale, lack depth and pixel density compared with my S6.
Then there is the iPhone 10 which cost a ridiculous £72/month but has a smaller screen than the S8+ and iPhone 8+. If both my girlfriend and I upgraded to the iPhone 10, the 24 month cost would be £3,456. That's equivalent to a car deposit, tropical 5 star holiday or high-end home cinema.
Instead I've decided to switch to a £17/month plan with 30GB data and unlimited minutes shared between the two of us. It will only cost us £204/year.
Facebook, Instagram, Chrome and Gmail works the same on our current phone as they do on the newer phone, so the additional processing power isn't necessary. I will probably upgrade phone in 1-2 years if I see a big leap in technology that doesn't come at a out-of-touch monthly cost.

Not just OS, but the hardware simply is vastly different.
People who actually think an iPhone is as fast/good as a Macbook Pro are in for a severe letdown.

Practically, I think losing Touch ID is the biggest let-down of the iphone X. There are quite a number of apps that have adopted Touch ID as the authentication method and Apple decides to remove it. There were rumours of an on-screen touch ID sensor but that didn't materialise. It is also reported to be more complex to use than other iphones with a home button. I'm using a 6s and I get why people get iphones and not androids, but when they keep making life more difficult for users, to a point i can safely say I do not want a iphone X anymore (i really don't think i'll accept using Face ID instead as it is now for Apple Pay). And, i don't think they are in a position to have the world fully adapting to their "standards" like the old days - with so many viable competitors now.
I never bought iphones for its superior hardware specs, but for the way it does what it does in a very reliable and safe manner. And i have to say having an iphone is nearly like having a nice piece of well built, good looking and high quality accessory, whereas an android device is a piece of electronic device period. It's probably like wearing a luxury brand Swiss watch, vs wearing some other watches.

Very true. I use Touch ID for important stuff (my two banking apps for example use Touch ID). Getting rid of it was not smart, but then again, very little they do these days is overly smart.
They should have put Touch ID on the back.
