International Engine of the Year Awards 2010

So BMW is still the big winner after all. No surprizes here.

Weird, the engine is 4.4 liter :eusa_thin
It's the S65, not the N/S63. ;)

EDIT: I just realized you talked about the M3 GTS engine. ;)

Best regards,
south

Congrats to all the winners. The 6.2L V8 in the AMGs will go down as a legendary engine, not only for its performance and sound, but the fact it's an engine that was a ground-up design by AMG. If there's an opportunity to pull up beside it, I have to roll down the window just to hear it pull away. Epic.

Now, not to take anything away from the AMG block, but were the V8 from the 458 Italia or the V10 from the LFA considered or are low-volume engines not taken into consideration?

Actually the V8 from the 458 Italia is #2 in the "above 4-liter" class:

Above 4-liters:
  1. Mercedes-AMG 6.2-litre (C 63 AMG, S 63 AMG, SL 63 AMG, CL 63 AMG, E 63 AMG, CLS 63 AMG, ML 63 AMG) 236
  2. Ferrari 4.5-litre V8 (458 Italia) 146
  3. Jaguar 5-litre V8 Supercharged (Jaguar XF, XJ, XK, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport) 126
  4. BMW M 5-litre V10 (M5, M6) 84
  5. BMW 4.4-litre DI Turbo (550i, 750i, X5, X6) 80
  6. Porsche 4.8-litre Turbo V8 (Panamera, Cayenne) 79
But somehow misses to enter top6 in "performance engine" category, in the favor of other "above 4-litre" engines that it was supposed to out-class :t-banghea (i.e. the BMW 4.4-litre V8, or the Ferrari 6-litre V12):

Performance Engine

  1. Mercedes-AMG 6.2-litre (C 63 AMG, S 63 AMG, SL 63 AMG, CL 63 AMG, E 63 AMG, CLS 63 AMG, ML 63 AMG) 220
  2. Porsche 3.8-litre flat six (GT3, 911 GT3 RS) 125
  3. BMW 3-litre DI Twin Turbo (135i, 335i, 535i, X5 35i, X6 35i, Z4) 67
  4. Ferrari 6-litre V12 (599 GTB) 67
  5. Nissan 3.8-litre Twin Turbo (GT-R) 64
  6. BMW 4.4-litre V8 (X5 M, X6 M) 60
If you ask me, these "awards" are TOTAL BULSHIT !!!! :D

I mean, logically speaking, they're a ******* mess ! :t-crazy2:

mclarenftw why don't you behave yourself and speak (write) more politely? You don't need offensive and/or swearing words to raise a point. Thanks.

Success times four for the BMW Group at the 2010 “Engine of the Year Awards”

* 24.06.2010
* Press Release

Engines made by BMW and MINI win awards in four out of eight capacity classes

Munich/Stuttgart. Success in four out of eight capacity classes put the BMW Group in a dominating position at the "International Engine of the Year Awards" this year. Among the award-winning power units at the world's most renowned engine competition were both petrol and diesel engines with four, six and eight cylinders. The victorious quartet consisted of the V8 engine of the BMW M3, the in-line 6-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo, direct injection and VALVETRONIC used in such vehicles as the BMW 1 Series, BMW 3 Series and BMW 5 Series, the 4-cylinder diesel engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo from the BMW X1 xDrive 23d and the BMW 123d, and the 4-cylinder Twin Scroll turbo engine of the MINI Cooper S.

The wide range of winning engines is further evidence of the outstanding expertise of the BMW Group in the area of engine development. It enables engines of great power yet also exemplary efficiency to be offered across all series and output classes. The "Engine of the Year" awards were conferred by an international jury made up of 76 engine journalists from 35 countries.
The award ceremony was held at the "Engine Expo" trade fair in Stuttgart.

The "Engine of the Year" awards have been in existence since 1999. Since then over 50 class and overall victories have fallen to engines developed for automobiles of the brands BMW and MINI. Among the serial production winners in this competition were the 1.6 litre 4-cylinder engine from the MINI Cooper S, achieving its fourth and last victory this year. Next year it will be the turn of the recently presented successor engine in the 1.4 - 1.8 litre capacity class. In addition to the Twin Scroll technology and petrol direct injection of its award-winning predecessor, this engine also has variable valve control and an output of 135 kw/184 bhp, as well as being the world's most efficient engine in its capacity class.

The first victory in the category of 1.8 - 2 litre engines went to the most powerful 4-cylinder diesel engine in the BMW range. The 2.0 litre fully aluminium direct injection power unit with BMW TwinPower Turbo and common rail direct injection has an output of 150 kW/204 bhp and impressed jury members both with its pulling power and its outstanding efficiency. The experts commented that in view of the qualities of this engine, it appeared doubtful as to whether diesel engines will get any better at all in future.

There was an internal BMW changeover in the class of 2.5 - 3 litre engines.
The new winner in this category is the 3.0 litre in-line 6-cylinder engine with an output of 225kW/306 bhp with BMW TwinPower Turbo, petrol direct injection and VALVETRONIC. It thus replaces the predecessor engine of identical output which secured the overall "Engine of the Year" award in 2007 and 2008, as well as finishing first in its capacity class last year. Yet further proof of the dominance of BMW engines in this capacity class is provided by a glance at the ranking table. Second to the new title winner and a long way ahead of the competition is the new 3.0 litre in-line 6-cylinder diesel engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo and common rail direct injection.

The V8 engine of the BMW M3 won its third award in succession in the capacity class between 3.0 and 4.0 litres. The 309kW/420 bhp 4.0 litre engine used in the high-performance sports cars BMW M3 Coupé, BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M3 Convertible fascinated the jury yet again with its outstanding propulsive force resulting from the high-revving concept which is characteristic of this power unit. In addition to brilliant performance qualities, the experts also noted the impressive efficiency of the high-performance engine, which in the BMW M3 is combined with an Auto Start/Stop function, brake energy regeneration and other BMW EfficientDynamics measures.

Best New Engine of the Year: For best new engine, the jury selected the new Fiat 1.4-liter Multi-Air inline-four. The Multi-Air technology was developed Fiat as a mechanism to provide infinitely variable valve timing and lift control and it can be easily adapted to existing engines. Fiat has plans to add Multi-Air to most of Chrysler's engine lineup in the next couple of years.

Best Performance Engine and Best Engine above 4.0-liters: In order to make a special car, you need to start with a special engine, and its hard to go far wrong with a high-revving V8. That's the path AMG chose when it decided to develop a new engine from the ground-up and the M156 6.2-liter V8 has been recognized as the best performance engine by the International Engine of the Year Awards.

The V8 is used in all of Mercedes-Benz' rear-wheel-drive AMG models, from the C63 to the SL and even its SUVs, with power output varying from 478 horsepower to over 525 depending on the application. A modified version is even used in the SLS AMG with 571 hp. In addition to the performance award, the M156 was also honored in the category for engines over 4.0-liters. Over the next few years, AMG will be phasing out this engine in favor of a new twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 that will be even more powerful and fuel efficient. Here's hoping it doesn't lose its character in the process...

Sub 1.0-liter: The 993cc inline three found in the European market Toyota Aygo, Citroen C1 and Peugeot 107 weighs in at a remarkably svelte 147 pounds and produces 67 hp. It's far more refined than the similar sized triple in the Smart and easily won the category.

1.4- to 1.8-liter: The 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four in the Mini Cooper S provides an outstanding combination of performance and fuel efficiency. With 175 horsepower it gives the Mini plenty of scoot while still delivering 30+ mpg

1.8- to 2.0-liters: The BMW twin-turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four diesel delivers 204 horsepower and a stump-pulling 295 pound-feet of torque. It powers the 123d to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds and delivers 37 mpg even when being thrashed. What more could you ask for? How about a 323d Touring?

2.0- to 2.5-liters: The 2.5-liter TSI inline-five from the Audi TT-RS clearly demonstrates why most automakers are scrambling to develop turbocharged and direct injected engines. With a peak power delivery of 340 horsepower and a torque curve that flat-lines at 332 pound-feet all the way from 1,600 to over 5,000 rpm this engine slings the TT-RS to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds while returning 25.6 mpg.

2.5- to 3.0-liters: The BMW N54 has been one of our favorite engines ever since it debuted with 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. It provides seamless power delivery from its perfectly balanced inline-six layout and uses two turbochargers to give quick response and torque everywhere. The N54 is being phased out of most applications this year in favor of an equally powerful N55 with a single twin-scroll turbo, direct injection and valvetronic for even better response and fuel efficiency.

3.0- to 4.0-liters: The BMW S65 4.0-liter V8 can only be found in the lovely M3. At idle and around town, it provides a pleasantly muted tone that won't draw undue attention to itself. But drop the hammer and it turns up the volume in the best possible way.

Overall best engine and best 1.0- to 1.4-liter: For several years now Volkswagen has offered a range of 1.4-liter TSI inline-fours in much of its European lineup. These boosted and direct injected engines deliver surprisingly robust torque for such small engines with great fuel economy. At the top of the range is the engine selected as overall best by the jury, the 1.4 TSI TwinCharger. While the lesser engines rely on just a turbocharger, this unit adds a mechanically driven supercharger to a larger turbocharger for an even broader response curve. The maximum output is 178 horsepower and combined fuel economy in the Golf is 38 mpg!

Mercedes Benz Amg V8 -- Autoblog

Now, regarding the "perfomance engine of the year", the V8 AMG, I hope you're aware of the fact that we're talking about the same engine that LOST 3 YEARS IN A ROW to the V10 M engine, which was declared "best performance engine of the year" and/or "best engine above 4 liter" in 2006, 2007, 2008. Now I ask, how can the same ******* engine that was declared better than the AMG unit for 3 ******* years, then loose in the following 2 years to the same ******* engine that it has beaten 3 years in a row ? :D Realistically speaking, these "engine of the year" awards are most useless, pointless, subjective automotive awards I have encountered so far.

That said, I also find it mind-boggling that this AMG "crap" (relatively speaking) actually got more votes than the 458 italia's engine, which is a marvel of automotive technology. But I'm not an "expert", so who am I to judge ? :)

mclarenftw why don't you behave yourself and speak (write) more politely? You don't need offensive and/or swearing words to raise a point. Thanks.

OMG, who did I offend this time ? :D And WHAT offensive words ? They don't even appear in the final post, so they might as well be innofensive words for all i know ;)

I hate to say it, as a germancarfan, but the V8 from Ferrari should have taken this one.
It's hands down the performance engine.

Yes, that followed closely by the LP560 engine. The latter of which, for some reason or the other, isn't even on the list ! Maybe those "experts" thought it was a tractor engine, and that's why they didn't bother with it.

The gap narrowed. The smart cdi engine was reworked, and it seems to have moved in the right direction, garnering 247 instead of 216 points the previous year. :)

2009 sub 1-litre
1. Toyota 1-litre three-cylinder (Aygo, IQ, Yaris/Vitz, Citroën C1, Peugeot 107, Subaru Justy) 318

6. Kia 1-litre four-cylinder (Picanto) 75

The 6.2 is a marvelous engine. I really wanted in my car, but just couldn't find the right model around it that fit what I was looking for, with budget into consideration, etc.

I also fell in love with the Bimmer's "little" 3.0 TT motor. However, I take it dependability isn't a factor in these "Awards"? I've heard things nearing horror stories on the 3.0 TT's problems (heat, etc.).

That must be the 'last' engine. The engine is now upgraded and with new turbos and Valvetronic.
I know a guy with a 335i, works like a charm.

Like I said in the other thread, BMW is AGAIN the big winner.

Engine of the Year awards is owned by BMW magnificance.

Looking for the negatives again are you ;)

It's disappointing, but I think it has a lot to do with the fact that the engine was put in a 2300+ kg SUV.
The M5 engine will have the same base, but coupled with a much lighter car, a DCT gearbox and a lot of tweaks to the engine itself, it will soon win the Performance Engine catogory again :usa7uh:
