International Engine of the Year Awards 2007

Can I just impart a small measure of disgruntlement. Something's not right here. In the category above 4 litres am I to believe that the extraordinary 6.2 litre AMG V8 engine only comes fifth?

Lightweight and compact, undersquare, bonkers power and torque, a soundtrack to die for; this AMG engine is as charismatic as it is versatile and ubiquitous. It does superb duty in a CLS 63 as it does in an ML 63. It ought to come in in second or third place, objectively, because in my humble opinion it is the best V8 engine in the world. By no means do I agree with its ranking.

I agree that the V8 deserves 2nd or 3rd.

The AMG won't have the low end vitality of the old 5.5 supercharged nor the high end of the BMW V10.

It's a low to mid compromise; but here's the catch, it's got way too much torque to follow the F1 formula of optimised torque exploitation via the custom made fancy sequential transmission (nor does it have variable exhaust for that matter).

In effect, for all its virtues witch a not few, it's a good/very good jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none.

Again, I definatelly agree that it deserved 2nd or 3rd place.

I'm surprised to see Lexus hybrid 5L V8 featuring so high on the list. I agree with you guys, the AMG V8 is more deserving of that place.

Mercedes should have paid the guys who make up these awards more money.

Im sorry but I dont think theres something quite right with these results, or maybe its because its all too performance orientated.

I don't think that this competition is made for that type engines : Ultra tuned and ultra rare.

It's an out of the box engine, not a pimped one a la 1000 hp+ Toyota Supra.

Besides it's not exactly ultra tuned, that would have implied over 900 HP or a 3.0 litre V10 producing 1100 hp+ at 22000 rpm+.
200 HP per litre is miserable by F1 standards even for a V8.

Tough the ultra rare part could be an issue.
BTW how many Ferrari 599 GTB are there sold ?!

Is the engine an F1 engine ?

Do you have an idea about its reliability ? Is it a "racing" reliabilty ?? :D

That's why it's just a mere 200 hp per litre.

Besides there are banned F1 or non-F1 exotic materials witch could simultaniously reduce weight and improve durability, reliability and lifespan. Maybe they're using such.

Even with "just" 200hp/L, i am curious to see if they succeded to make it reasonnably reliable, otherwise i don't see where is the big acheivement in putting an old f1 engine in a,street car.

That's true. Lifespan/durability/reliability will be critical.

[ Giving its extreme capabilities for a production car it can (probably) kill you, literally, before the engine fails. ]

However what bugs me, is how they got 700 HP at just 10200 rpms from a 3.5 spec. :t-hands: :eusa_thin
Usually at 10k to 11k, the 3.5 spec V8s delivered 600 to 650 hp. The 700 to 750 hp barrier meant rpms of over 14k.

I suspect they used some V10 era technologies, now banned on the 2.4 V8 spec., and previously not available on the 3.5 spec.
