International Engine of the Year 2013 Awards

The International Engine of the Year Awards is the only competition that judges engines only – irrespective of the models they come in. So, we expected this year’s results with great interest, only to see the Engine of the Year award being handed to Ford’s 999cc 3-cylinder turbo engine. Pretty impressive for a single litre engine, actually!

On to the German camp now, Audi won the 2 to 2.5l category with the great 2.5TFSI 5-cylinder engine, found under the bonnet of the RS3, TT-RS and the RS Q5. BMW won two categories, the 1.4 to 1.8l with the “Prince” engine, made under the BMW – PSA joint venture and found in the MINI line-up and some Peugeot models. Also the N20 2.0t 4-cylinder engine won the 1.8 to 2.0l category. The N20 is found under the bonnet of most BMW models branded as 20i and 28i.

Moving on to Porsche, Zuffenhausen won the 2.5 to 3.0l category with their 2.7 flat six with direct injection, found in the Boxster and Cayman. Finally, VW’s 1.4TSI engine with Active Cylinder Deactivation won two categories, that of the Best New Engine and the 1.0 to 1.4l. Sadly, Mercedes-Benz didn’t win any category. BMW is even losing the edge as best motorist. The should stop resting on their laurels.

The results are a little cocked.

In the Performance Engine category the M159 AMG 6.2 litre engine gets the nod over the M157 AMG 5.5 litre Twin-turbo engine yet in the Above 4 litre category the M157 places two spots higher.

This is becoming a bit of a non-event award.

The one thing I do agree with however is that the BMW straight sixes own the 3.0 litre category. I can't wait for them to move to V6s.

Agreed, and besides, how many times they're going to award the same engines? It's kind of weird...

Interesting that in the 3-4 Litre category, the M3's engine placed second... to the McLaren of all engines...and only by a handful of points. How great is that engine!?!
