Global sales 2006: MB, Audi, BMW

BMW are still at the top, but it's getting close!!

BTW, it's interesting that the UK is so close to the USA, for Audi sales, would have expected the US to be a much larger market due to there being so many people there. I suppose Audi still have a lot to do in America!

wow cool..who did these calculations??

BMW AG. :)

In the years 2010, 2011 & 2012 almost all high volume models (except X5) are ending their lifecycle. 5er in 2010, X3 & 1er in 2011, 3er in 2012.

BMW have no enough new models in the sleeve to bridge the production / sales gap during the X3, 1er & 3er Mk changeover - like they did in the year 2004 when they introduced 1er & X3 (and so compensated dropping last-year-of-lifecycle 3er sales, and still-not-complete-model-line 5er sales). In 2011 5er models line still won't be complete, 1er & X3 production will be stopped due Mk change, 3er sedan & touring sales will be low due being in the last year of production. Imagine this gap in BMW production / sales, and then imagine the competition sales / production with many of new models (completely new, or just new Mk).

Year 2010 & 2011 will be crucial for BMW. Also: Panke is being quite responsible for this upcoming gap, opposing further significant model expansion. That was the main reason for his dismissal. New Directors Board led by Reithofer will try to speed up the development & production of new models - for launch in 2010 & 2011. We are talking mostly about derivate models (core model design variants).

wow very interesting..lets see wat happen..
i belive it will be back and forth or close like this for a while now..
no one of the 3 germans are running away anywhere

Im really looking forward when Audi sell more than one million cars. I think it will happen this year.

How is it possible that BMW sell more cars than Mercedes? Correct me if Im wrong but doesn't Mercedes offer more different models and also perhaps more engine choices than BMW but still BMW mangage to sell more cars. Weird!

I'm thinking its to do with pricing. :t-hands: MB cars are on average more expensive. Also when it comes to sales of 'High End' luxury vehicles, Mercedes is still the market leader.

I dont think price is the whole truth, both MB and 'BMW has expensive cars and the price difference isnt giant, not where I live anyway. MB has sold more cars than bmw for many many years even if they costed more.
I think more it has to do that the bmw brand has gotten stronger and very well planned markeeting.

True, BMW has positioned and marketed their cars extremely well. Another factor could be the well publicized quality/reliability problems faced by MB.

Eleventh Consecutive Sales Record For Audi

In 2006, Audi succeeded in setting a new record for vehicle sales for the eleventh year in a row. Worldwide 905,100 vehicles were delivered to customers (2005: 829,109)*, representing an increase of 9.2 percent, or almost 76,000 cars.

A record number of vehicles were sold in 41 markets, including Australia with an all-time record of 5,770 units delivered.

Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG remarked: "We have not only achieved our eleventh sales record in succession, but will also be announcing new record levels of revenue and earnings. Audi is the fastest-growing premium brand. This puts us well on our way to becoming the most successful premium manufacturer in the world by 2015."

In Germany, the best sales result ever was achieved with 257,792 (247,125) vehicles delivered to customers, representing a rise of 4.3 percent. Audi therefore achieved a market share of 7.6 percent in its home market (Germany), its highest market share in 26 years.

In Europe, without Germany, the company posted a 7.7 percent rise in sales to 400,650 (371.995) units. The highest rate of increase in the major European markets was achieved in Spain, where sales were up 10.3 percent to 54,557 (49,453) units, followed by France with 45,525 (41,498) units, equivalent to growth of 9.7 percent, and Italy with 59,002 (55,574) units. This is 6.2 percent more than in the previous year.

Great Britain grew by 5.7 percent, with vehicle sales reaching 86,003 (81,374). The positive trend in Eastern Europe continued in 2006 with the number of vehicles sold up by 31.7 percent to 27,100 (20,559) units.

The USA remains the largest export market, with a sales record of 90,116 (83,066, +8.5 percent) vehicles.

Audi vehicles also sold in record numbers in China (without Hong Kong), with 80,808 (58,128) units delivered. This represents an increase of 39.0 percent. Audi will be investing in India in 2007 in order to exploit potential for growth in Asia. The brand has confirmed it will establish a subsidiary there in the first quarter, and will be opening its own local production plant in the autumn.

In Australia, Audi achieved an all-time high of 5,770 units - an increase of 20 percent.

The key factor behind the record vehicle sales in 2006 was the spectacular array of new product. Sales of the Audi A6 allroad quattro rose by 31.9 percent to 9,800 units, followed by the Audi TT, sales of which climbed by 19.9 percent to 19,500 units.

28,000 of the Audi A4 Cabriolet were delivered to their new owners (+ 18.8 percent). Audi achieved a growth rate of 9.5 percent to 235,500 vehicles for the Audi A3. Sales of the Audi A6 rose to 224,750 units (+9.1 percent). The number of Audi A8 cars sold increased by 5.5 percent to 22,600 units.

In its first year on the market, 52,750 Audi Q7 were sold.

"We are proud at having more than achieved the record level of 900,000 vehicles sold. I am especially pleased that we have reached an historic sales record in Germany, our home market. With records in over 40 markets we have prepared the way for achieving our sales target of 1.4 million vehicles by 2015," commented Ralph Weyler, Member of the Board for Marketing and Sales at AUDI AG.

I think all of the 3 luxury marques will achieve successesive sales records within the next few years. The market for prestige vehicles will continue growing, especially with the increasing demand for these types of cars in booming China and India.

I'm going to stick my neck out of the window and go against what everone here is supporting: to be the number 1 sales leader. I think this can be a bad thing for luxury goods such as cars because it compromises exclusitivity. If a premium-manufacturing company becomes so fixated on sales leadership, don't they risk the possibility of cheapening their brand because it's absolutely everywhere?

One of the core reasons why these brands are regarded as "prestige" is beacuse of their exclusitivity, along with their quality and engineering integrity. A focus on sales increase/leadership is the ultimate threat to destroying that.

I know that Ferrari and Lamborghini are taking steps to maintain "exclusitivity" of their products.

These german manufacturers should follow some very good marketing and brand management methods to preserve their brand if they're going to strive for sales leadership.

BMW Group unofficial numbers added! Officail press release with all details follows tomorrow. :usa7uh: Official numbers will stay almost the same as the ones posted above.

That is just awesome. I wonder if they can break the one million barrier already in 2008?

They broke it long time ago and 2006 as well... Are you missing something or...?
Hehe...Tycoon..no they didn't. They sold just over 905 000 this year global. 76 000 more then the year before.

P.S. Oops! I quotes the wrong post. I meant Audi of course!

MB and BMW are what are called masstige brands, unlike small/very small players like Lambo, Aston, Ferrari and Pagani.

Not really comparable. Just for comparison, there are more MBs, BMWs then there are fords in Germany. So Ford is actually more exclusive.

The germans do have the more expensive/exclusive/performant sub-brands like M and AMG tough.

Small exclusive makers are either extinct or were bought by another big company, not really an alternative for BMW/MB.
