X6 First Details Emerge On BMWs Next X6

The BMW X6 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV by German automaker BMW. The BMW X6 is the originator of the sports activity coupé (SAC), referencing its sloping rear roof design. It combines the attributes of an SUV (high ground clearance, all-wheel drive and all-weather ability, large wheels and tires) with the stance of a coupé (styling featuring a sloping roof).

Despite being panned by critics for its limited cargo and rear passenger space, BMW’s crossover coupe, the X6, sells well enough worldwide to warrant a second generation. Adding to the justification for a new X6 are similar upcoming models from rivals Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Range Rover.

Don’t expect the second generation of BMW X6 to simply be more of the same, however. As Autocar explains, BMW will take steps to further differentiate the X6 from its platform-mate, the X5 crossover.

Expect the new X6 to wear bolder styling than the outgoing model, with more of an emphasis on sport than the first-generation models (X6 M excluded, of course). It will be longer from bumper to bumper as well (by some 1.3 inches), which should help with the X6’s interior space, too. Wheelbase will also be stretched, but how much isn’t clear.

The next X6 will benefit from the same composite steel chassis used to underpin the new BMW X5. The big gain here is weight savings, which will be further aided by a switch from mechanical torque vectoring to electronic torque vectoring to shed even more pounds.

Under-hood, expect to see turbocharged in-line six-cylinder engines powered by both gasoline and diesel. The twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 used in the last X6 and X6 M will return as well, and all models will benefit from an eight-speed automatic transmission for added performance and fuel economy.

Underneath, base models use a conventional suspension design with steel springs, while high-end models get a self-leveling pneumatic suspension with adjustable ride control.

Electronics will utilize a system called “FlexRay” that allows for easier upgrades throughout the life of the car. This will impact not only the X6’s infotainment system, but even the CPU that governs chassis and engine settings.

Word is that BMW's plug-in hybrid version, the X6 ActiveHybrid, will also return. Expect power to come from the turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder gasoline engine (instead of the previous model's 4.4-liter V-8), with a gearbox-mounted electric motor for supplemental power.

Look for the X6 to be joined by two other crossover coupe models in BMW’s lineup as well, likely to be named the X4 and X2. As their names imply, both will be smaller (and more affordable) than the next X6, which is expected to hit dealers by 2015.

I know it won't have exactly the same face like the new 4er but something similar, still this rendering looks amazing! (y)
I hope the new generation will have much better proportion especially from side view compared to the current model's awkward looks.

^ This doesn't make any sense. 2018 is far, far away. I can't seem to find why it would be postponed in the article either...

If Autobild is right the X6 gen.2 has been postponed until 2018:

It can't be.
The current gen X6 has almost reached the end of its life cycle so the new gen must be ready next year as 2015 model. What's the reason to postpone it? Afterall, it's been a quite successful model in the market.

I hope @EnI or SCOTT27 can confirm about this.

Btw, isn't this about the time for us to see some spy shots of the next gen X6? makes me wonder if they are really postponing it..

2015 at the latest. No point in Spartanburg even thinking of producing it beyond the, late 2014 Expire Date. After that people would be laid off at the Spartanburg Plant for lack of interest in the historical X6;)

2018? X6 & X5M? No.

F15 X5M is already being tested an the roads ... Scheduled accordingly for an M model.

X6 is also on the way - replacing E71 as scheduled: after 7-year life-cycle. Expect to see first prototypes on the roads soon.

New X6 render , it is going to be interesting to see if anyone is adopting the Sport Activity Coupe outline ?
I have seen spy photographs of the Jaguar which could be A Sport Activity Coupe , yet to see if the Audi and Mercedes-Benz will have. coupe outline or just be a lower roofed SUV. Porsche are apparently developing a Coupe of the next Cayenne.

This segment is going to get interesting...

A BMW 'SAC' and a BMW 'GT' are waaaayyy too similar. I don't see the point of having both to be honest.

And that chop is laughable at best.

It´s really funny. At the time the X6 was presented there are much criticism what are the sense of this new segment. And now after the success of the X6 other manufacturer are following and planning to build own SAC´s.
Or the Idrive when it was presented with the E65. It´s another example for criticism at first than following.

You can look at this way in regards to anything product related.
Someone has to be first , someone has to break new ground and undertake the risk to change conventional thinking whether in design , technology or actual product. People are sometimes caught unaware and are reluctant to change but eventually acceptance seeps through the curtains of denial. Then competitors have no choice but to adapt and progress that idea.

BMW is a company that not only embodies this philosophy but they encourage it also. Witness the BMW i3 and BMW i8 for example and of course the Chris Bangle era of BMWs.

I remember when they first started to conceive X6 that people were stating an SAV Coupe would not work , then they brought out Xcoupe and slowly some began to accept but there were some dead against the idea , it was when we got to the conceptual ideas for the X6 they became convinced of the potential for the car especially when the designers and engineers could actually deliver that roofline , sporty , highly dramatic and an interesting topic of conversation, when real world possibilities predicted the car would have to more realistic to suit areas of packaging.
Almost six years to the day of the first X6 Concept at the 2007 IAA and the media still did not believe the production car would be that sleek.

Now due to the success of the X6 , you could probably visit every boardroom for a manufacturer for various sections of the market and I can guarantee that at least somebody has mentioned Sport Activity Coupe in regards to future product planning.
The next X6 continues the dynamic roofline but with a slightly longer wheelbase we get a slightly more stretched but equally dynamic outline as before.

Witness the BMW i3 and BMW i8 for example and of course the Chris Bangle era of BMWs.
I can attest to this. I just had lunch with a former executive at Mercedes. He said Mercedes messed up big time by not having a response in development for the i-program.
