X5 E70 BMW X5 Facelift Thread (Spy pics & info)

The BMW X5 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV produced by BMW. The X5 made its debut in 1999 as the E53 model. It was BMW's first SUV. BMW marketed the X5 officially as a "Sports Activity Vehicle" (SAV), rather than an SUV, to indicate its on-road handling capability despite its large dimensions.

Facelifted X5 with painted wheel arch as X5M.
We have seen photos of the facelifted version of the BMW X5 before, but now we can show the vehicle almost completely undisguised ahead of its expected debut at the end of this year. The second-generation E70 X5 model was introduced in late 2006 so a facelift around the end of the decade is right on cue for the SUV’s mid-cycle update, coming in time for the 2010 model year.

Changes to the X5’s styling will be subtle, with new bumpers added both front and rear as revealed by these latest spy shots. Larger air intakes in the front fascia are the primary change. Slight styling revisions inside, such as the addition as BMW’s second-generation iDrive system, and new alloy wheel designs should also make the cut.

The current lineup of engines will carry over largely unchanged but there will be the new hybrid model and U.S. customers will be able to opt for BMW’s brilliant 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine as well. Another new addition will be the xDrive 50i from the X6.

So, when will the facelifted BMW X5 be unveiled? The most likely point would be next year’s Detroit auto show in January but an earlier reveal at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show in November cannot be discounted.

^About time Motor Authority posted them. I tried to get those photos posted this morning and kept getting an error.

Hmmm, so if the wheel arches will now be body-color painted, then how about the front bumper? If the front bumper maintains certain sections being black plastic, then it'll be interesting to see where the body-colored plastic ends, and where the black plastic begins.

The X6 and the X3 both still have the black plastic wheel arches, and the X1 has not plastic wheel arches, so it may be that the facelifted X5 has a mostly body-colored front bumper.

EDIT: Had a closer look at the front bumper in the above photos. The first photo shows that the front bumper will indeed be body-colored because if you have a look at the open circle (just beside of where the licence plate would go) you can see the colored bumper. Unless of course this test vehicle is fitted with an updated M-package.. then we're back to square-one.

Also, it looks like the brake light graphics will be similar to the 7er, though it doesn't seem as 'sharp' as the new 7er..maybe a half-ass/cheaper alternative, much like the E90 3er had fake CELIS LED brake light strips.

No press release yet and they will show at Detroit? Does not make sense.

We have until early January. The launch material is being worked on as we speak. Right now the priority is the 5er. We are busy prepping everything for the live reveal next week.

A hope the servers & streaming capacity is capable enough - since there will be a huge interest in the live broadcasting of F10 preimere. :usa7uh:

When do we get the link for the Live reveal?

found this on another forum, dont know how much of it is true:

Bad news for current X5 M owners?
According to one of our sources, the X5 facelift is due around march/april 2010.
There won't be any power or engine upgrade but the 6-speed automatic tranny may be replaced by a different system (8-speed tranny or even DCT) and the X5 M may get KERS, maybe optional.
Just wanted to mention it...

since my X5 M is going to be produced in January, so I guess I have no chance of getting a facelift.
Why I care ? The DKG and/or KERS upgrade could improve the performance figures of the X5 M, even if the power output stays the same.
Minor external changes are expected for the X5 M, LED daylight running lights are being tested (not sure if they make it into production) and the taillights look more like the new 7series lights.
A minor price increase is also to be expected.

The next M5 is the pinnacle of M and way more important model than a X5. BMW don't want to take away the glory and attention from the next M5.
Thats why I don't think X5M is getting KERS and a DCT gearbox before the M5.

Why would they update the X5/6M so soon ? I wouldn't be suprised to see KERS and a new transmission once the X5/6M are actually ready to be facelifted/updated. I expect this won't happen until the next M5 is unveiled, and of course right around the time the new Cayenne and/or ML AMG are supposed to be released.
