De Tomaso De Tomaso Brand Bought by Italy's ATS, New Pantera Planned

De Tomaso Automobili Ltd. (previously known as De Tomaso Modena SpA) is an Italian car-manufacturing company. It was founded 1959 by Alejandro de Tomaso in Modena. The De Tomaso brand was acquired in 2014 by Hong Kong–based Ideal Team Ventures and in 2019 the newly formed company presented their first product, a retro-styled sports car called the De Tomaso P72.

De Tomaso Brand Bought by Italy's ATS, New Pantera Planned

In 2009, the De Tomaso brand was bought by Italian businessman and former Fiat executive Gian Mario Rossignolo, who had a plan to revive the sports car manufacturer. By 2011, things were looking promising for the brand following the presentation of the Deauville crossover concept – good in terms of potential revenues, not necessarily design-wise.

De Tomaso had even started development work on a new Pantera sports car, but last year, the company went bankrupt, with rumors circulating at the time that BMW was interested in buying it. Unfortunately for the brand, that scenario never materialized, but the De Tomaso saga continues, as the rights to the brand have been purchased by Italy’s ATS (Automobili Turismo e Sport), the maker of the Sport 1000 race and street-legal car.

Autoblog.com has learned that ATS is preparing to relaunch De Tomaso with a new lineup, with future De Tomaso products to share platforms and other technologies with ATS models. More specifically, a new Pantera could use the platform of the ATS 2500 GT, an upcoming mid-engined sports car. As for the Deauville project, the report says it was never more than a rebodied Cadillac SRX and has no real future - not necessarily bad news here.

It sounds great so far, but Automobili Turismo e Sport went back into business only last year, on the occasion of the original brand’s 50th anniversary. It remains to be seen whether it has the financial strength to bring the 2500 GT to market, let alone develop new De Tomaso vehicles. Official details will be announced later this month.

Good news. Always loved that distinct looking stunning machine. The new one will sure have some big shoes to fill.

Retro done right. I'm amazed by how well it has turned out.

The sound and design, both inside and out is amazing.

I don’t like the Ares design, too heavy, Corvette lights, basically a Huracan but with all the problems of a tiny manufacturer without deep pockets but that’s all subjective.

The ring brothers pantera is my favorite by far

Conceived and designed as the first example of ARES DESIGN’s ‘Legends Reborn’ service, its Panther ProgettoUno is a comprehensive modern reimagining of the iconic 1970s Pantera. It is exquisitely constructed from carbon fibre and has a unique mix of traditional craftsmanship and modern engineering and manufacturing technologies.

The basis for the conversion – ARES DESIGN’s clients’ donor cars – is one of today’s most revered Italian supercars, powered by a 5204cc naturally aspirated V10 that develops 650 hp and 600 Nm of torque. The original Pantera and the modern-day donor car share broadly similar dimensions. The donor is considerably wider, but with a wheelbase that is only 12 centimetres longer than the original Pantera it is an ideal basis for the transformation.
