A4/S4/RS4 Breaking: Audi Drops Manual Transmission 6-Speed for EU Market Facelifted S4 and S5

I always find it surprising where manufacturers say the demand is not enough in Europe for manuals when always the general impression is that driving manual transmission cars is far more common place in Europe as opposed to US where only 4 - 5% of the drivers drive a manual car.

Because we all have a manual, people want something new and more importantly, better.

For Europe, I think this is a smart move

I drove an S5 4.2 in manual and later on switched to an S-Tronic S4, anyone with experience of Audi Quattro cars with manuals will know that they don't like to be hurried and how perfectly matched S-Tronic is with Quattro. I'm a huge favour of these transmissions and it perfectly suits Audi's character of controlled efficiency.

Plus everything that Klier said. :usa7uh:

That's it, I'll have to remove your name from the manual transmission club member list then! :D

Other forum but still a big fan of manuals too though personally I don't think Audi make that great of a manual compared to their dual clutchers which are epic so this decision truly suits on this occasion. I believe the M-DCT is also epic now too since they solved the issue I had with mine, but unlike Audi the BMW manual in general is rather good.

I think Klier hit the nail on the head, autos are novelty to us in the same way a manual is to those in the States.

He sold his manual M3 for a Cayenne. Bob should be banned for life :D

Never owned a manual M3, it was a M-DCT. Had issues that weren't getting resolved during the months I had and it became too annoying so I got rid, it was a shame because otherwise it was a great car.

You said it better than me.
Plus, a DCT just fits an Audi better than a manual imo. A BMW is great with manual because of it's technical design, but an Audi with AWD and DCT is a perfect match. Efficiency perfection.

BTW, I have never driven M DCT yet (unfortunately :( ), but I did get to try the regular BMW DCT on several occasions, and I love it to death!!!
Today for example I drove a Z4 35i with DCT. Launch control is so freaking fantastic :D

Me fooling around with the DCT.

I forgot how the launch control worked :D

Completely agree with you here, Audi's drivetrains are fwd based even the quattro ones so their gearboxes aren't as smooth as a proper rwd gearbox can be. That's why I prefer an Audi with S-Tronic instead of a manual and why I feel it was the right decision to make, not only that but as a DCT it is extremely good and my preferred DCT out of all of them.

This might not be the last word is handling when compared to the Cayman or Boxster but it looks better than both.

I feel manual should always be an option. Not for 2000 kg cars but for smaller cars like 1/3- series. To only offer automatics is unacceptable imo.

If the gearbox happens to be very good as is the case with a BMW then I would agree with you but from my personal experience of the S5 manual and S4 S-Tronic then I would pick the latter every time because it's so good to use and never picks the wrong gear. We have a manual GTI this time round instead of the DSG on the last one and even the wife wouldn't pick the manual again.

A manual does not fit heavy AWD cars like Audi. Even a 5 Series does not need any manual. But when we talk about smaller lighter cars then it sould be offered.

No need for a manual in a car like that. In a sporty car, however, I still think it is really important.

I've tried all kind of automatics but Im still not convinced. My next car is getting manual gearbox. Its suits me better.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
