M5 BMW M5 F10 (spy pics & info)

The BMW M5 is a high-performance variant of the BMW 5 Series marketed under the BMW M sub-brand. M5 models have been produced for every generation of the 5 Series since 1984, with occasional gaps in production (1995 to 1998, 2023 to 2024). Official website: BMW M
Hmmm. Is this really the M5? We haven't seen a single spy shot of the M Sport package yet and that is due in Paris in October. I thought we would have seen a spy shot already. Maybe this is the M Sport package?

I know the front air dam in this picture is the same as the other "definite" pictures of the M5 from the 'ring, but maybe the M5 on the ring was wearing the M Sport package. This just seems a bit dull. Where has the power dome gone for example? The wheel arches don't have any flare at all.

And Klier, what do you mean about the front bumper being curved (if you're still talking to me?) :D

Of course I still talk to you.
I meant there seems to be a little swoosh in the shape of the airholes. Not sure how to describe it in English. I'll draw a line to show what I mean later tonight, I gotta go now!
As for flared wheelarches and a powerdome, no M5 has that, that's for M3 (right?)

And if you doubt if it's M5, check the link ;)

There ya go Betty, a quality post that has relevance and importance to the thread. (Not being sarcastic)

As for these latest spy photos. Yeah, they pretty much backup the design shown in that white M5 CGI. Upturned 'mouth' ala M3 (and ala every MB AMG), and the absence of fog lights. I certainly don't expect a hood bulge on the M5 (even though it looks great on the M3) because the M5 is somewhat more of an executive car (though to contradict that, the M5 is no longer a wolf in sheep clothing).

I guess those who feel the new 5er look similar to the current 3er should be more than pleased that the new M5 will look similar to the current M3.

I'm with betty in thinking that this is more likely M Sports package in testing vs. the actual M5.

Isn't the M5 supposedly meant to have larger, wider kidney grills to allow for more cooling in the M5??

Thank heavens they're still testing this car. That is a horrendously large panel gap.

Haha... dude, that's just some cheap plastic that they bought from Home Depot and bashed it into shape just for testing purposes. I'm sure the production version won't have a Home Depot tag on it. :D

While I can fully understand the line of thinking that you both are following, just have a look at the brake disc in the photo below.

Furthermore, the M-Sports Package has always made room for fog-lights since the car still has be as 'practical' as a non M-Sports 5er. This car is missing foggies, and I don't think we've ever seen BMW test a car without fog lights and then surprise us with fog lights when its unveiled.

The standard 5er hasn't even hit the dealerships yet, and the M-package usually isn't offered till a year or so later. The development time for the M5 spans a much longer time-frame, so when you put it into perspective, it's natural that we see M5 mules running around before we see M-package 5ers.

Some one should have posted this one instead and all this discussion on if it is M5 or not would have been unnecessary.

Yeah, but I guessed people would click the link and then it would be obvious that this is an M5 and not an M pack.

Funny Betty starts about it maybe being an M pack, because I recall him making a fool out of me when I thought the M5 was maybe the M pack in testing many months ago, when a) the car was still in full cladding, b) the F10 hadn't been released yet and c) the 550i was still being tested with a quad exhaust setup like M5, only with different pipes.
The huge brake discs was the only way to spot it being not a regular 5er, while it's obvious that this new pic is the M5.

This is a pic of what will likely be the wheel design of the M5, and behind it you see the same brake discs as the car in the pics, only in the pic it has different, non M5 rims:

The car in the pic is missing a whole lot of M parts, and combined with the tape it might look a bit underwhelming to some, and that is exactly what BMW wants at this point.

The air holes in the bumper are huge, and the kidney design going to change on the M5 is probably a fable, since there is absolutely no need. And no spy pic is backing up that theory either.
My bet is on the grille being the same dimension as the current F10 grille, with maybe a different chrome lining around the grille changing the appearance slightly (like 7er with or without nightvision)

I know what you mean bro. I was just pointing out the large gap. It's like when you get on the Subway in NY and the operator constantly reminds you to "mind the gap" lol

It seems that the 2011 BMW M5 is nearing production-ready status, and while the new supersedan may still be wearing a bit of swirly camouflage, it's easy to see what the more aggressive M5 will look like in its new F10 5 Series body.

As we've mentioned earlier, the 2011 M5 is expected to ditch the outgoing car's high-revving V10 in favor of a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 borrowed from the X5 M and X6 M. Currently, that engine kicks out 555 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque, but if the rumormill is to be believed, BMW's M division has cranked out some extra punch for the M5, to the tune of 578 hp and 530 lb-ft. That means 0-60 mph runs should happen in under 4.5 seconds on the way to a limited top speed of 155 mph. As for transmissions, we'll bet our last dollar that the M5 will use a dual-clutch setup, and we're still crossing our fingers that a proper manual transmission will find its way into the cards as well.

Expect the production-ready M5 to debut later this year (Paris Motor Show?) or in the very early months of 2011.

I wonder if the front of the car is just painted mat black or is made of some lightweight plastic as rumored by Scott.

somehow, so far it looks les "in your face" as the current model, hope that isn't the case, It's a bimmer, they can handle the arrogant looks :D

The camo is just doing it's job well :t-cheers:
And the car is missing parts like the real M5 rims, side skirts, what appears to be the whole back bumper, CF roof, M mirrors, M side gills and even the exhaust (it's a placeholder for sure)

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
