Re: Officiall: BMW GINA Light Vision

So, is this some kind of metal fabric?

Re: Officiall: BMW GINA Light Vision

Awesome technology and good looking car (although side profile has to grow on me), but i am dissapointed that it's only one of these very imaginative and useless concepts, yeah sure the morphing idea is amazing but we all know that they won't make it to production, there's some hints of the z4 design but we already know more or less how it will look like, i was expecting a concept that showcases the technologies that bmw is working on, specialy engine & lightweight contruction techs and obviously this is not, wich is dissapointing cause we know that BMW concepts are extremly rare, and we already had two "useless" concepts, so i guess we will have to wait ages until we get another concept a la cs.

Re: Officiall: BMW GINA Light Vision

^ They are not useless in the greater scheme of things.

Apart from contributing to the technical knowledge, it also is like brainstorming for the design team ...and naturally will also create a lot of interest in the brand and sew the seeds of new styling trends in the minds of consumers.

Re: Officiall: BMW GINA Light Vision

I am aware of that Rob but for us simple mortals that doesn't means much. :D

Re: Officiall: BMW GINA Light Vision

this is really shifting boarders :icondrool
thats why we love bmw ... this is amazing

At the very least, does it not reaffirm your appreciation for BMW as a design and technology leader in the auto industry?

Re: Officiall: BMW GINA Light Vision

From a design perspective I think it is a giant step backwards. The advanced technology is all well and good but light years away from reality. Let's see it get past NCAP.

It's interesting reading back through the comments prior to the official shots that a couple of people supposed to be close to BMW or to 'sources' were suggesting that this was a precursor to the new Z8/ Z9 sports car. Clearly it is not or a show case for 'Efficient Dynamics' as was predicted.

A high end sports car is a gaping hole in the BMW line-up that needs to be filled. I have seen little eveidence other than the M1 Homage concept that there is anything in the pipeline.

I would like our two pundits to provide an exact launch date for the Z8/9 replacement they keep mentioning. As someone who is in the market for such a car I would like to know how long I'll be waiting before looking elsewhere.

To be very honest Rob, i don't really care about concepts because it's very easy to make great things that will never go into production, look to what the japanese are doing with their concepts, it's billion times more advanced, radical and sometimes avantgarde than all the german concepts, yet they are very far from being seen as design leaders.

Re: Officiall: BMW GINA Light Vision

nutsaboutcars,

how is the design a "giant step backwards"?

This is cutting edge bionic design -- this will be featured in all the science magazines, you can bet on that.

In order to be a leader, you need to have followers. I sure hope no one follows the direction BMW is taking with this hideous contraption. Give me design lead by engineering demands over this car-crossed-with-umbrella any day.

I'd love to have back the BMW that gave us such glorious machines as the E30 M3 and the E34 M5. If you want out-of-the-box thinking, look no further than Franco Sbarro and Frank Rinderknecht, they really do the weird stuff so much better than Bangle.

Yeah I know what you are saying. Still, I do believe that some of this technology could find its way into production eventually.

You are right about the Japanese concepts too. :)

he he :)...this is very much technology-led design.

It is experimental ....that doesn't make it irrelevant or pointless.

C'mon guys, where's your sense of artistic adventure .....this is pure art!

Re: Officiall: BMW GINA Light Vision

I think Concepts do give hints about what the carmaker is thinking to, what he works on. At least it's the case with the Germans: Audi shows you the car with 90% definitive design, MB shows hints on design and the technology of the future S-Class. BMW never was releasing a lot of Concepts, and only to tease the design.

This Concept is really interesting. Of course it's not as advanced as some fancy electronic gadgets in Japanese Concepts. However, for me it's not that far away.
Of course the next Beemer won't have a textile skin. But couldn't you imagine a kidneys area made of softer material that can move accordingly to the needs of the motor? the grilles are already active in some Beemers.

Couldn't you imagine a "softer", active trunklid creating a "wing" (just an update of a movable wing)? Would an active rear diffuser be that difficult to make?

This Concept should not be taken in a whole. it's the idea of a car with several moving bodyparts that could be implemented in production cars. The rest, we will see.

This is a Concept. it won't make it into production; however it does give ideas of what could be made. These ideas are here made extreme, but the base ideas will surely get into production. Just like its design is an extreme version of the future Z4.

This is the idea of the active aerodynamics that is featured here, and that BMW will no doubt apply in production version.

Re: Officiall: BMW GINA Light Vision

I dont think its a beautiful design, its exciting and cool I would say. I like the way the frontlights open up.

I would like to know more about the engine and how far off we are before we see a fast sportcar from BMW. I'm kinda tired of Concept , I want production cars.

GINA stand for "Geometry and Functions In “N” Adaptions"

Re: Officiall: BMW GINA Light Vision

^ I love it too Andreas and Hussein.

You are right Amaury, this skin is not going to be seen in the next 7 series ....but it is a very intriguing idea.

It is very much like the Mercedes concept car inspired by a boxfish. the structure of the vehicle was inspired by the skeleton of a fish -- nobody is expecting this to be the next E class.

1. You should know the skin has very little to do with car safety structure. The body frame does. Many skin parts are made of composite plastics today, and vehicles still get 5 stars at NCAP.

2. This concept showcases various design cues of the upcoming Z-cars: Z4, Z8 & Z2. A Z-mix. There are some design elements which are copy-pasted from every of those cars.

3. EfficientDynamics: it's not only about powertrains & drivetrains. This concept features an Aluminium Space Frame, CF parts, and ultra-light metal cloth. Reducing the weight of the car significantly.

4. The new Z8 is coming shortly (ie about a year) after the new 8er hits the markets.

:t-cheers:
