1 Series BMW (F40) 1 Series Hatch - from Leaked to Official

The BMW 1 Series is a range of subcompact executive cars (C-segment) manufactured by BMW since 2004. Positioned as the entry-level model in BMW range of products, the first generation was produced in hatchback, coupé and convertible body styles.
It seems tamed, lost the battle against the establishment

I'll wait for better pictures.

I'm straggling to find a reason to pay 1er money for an FWD hatchback. I'd happily buy a Megane and save myself some money.

That said, there's no way in hell I'm ever going to buy an FWD sedan (one segment above) again in my life, no matter how cheaper an FWD might be.

Blame the FWD configuration. It now looks like one in a generic euro hatchbacks. The new Golf GTI and Golf R will likely be better proportioned, have satnav with satellite view, Android Auto and Google CarPlay as standard.

No doubt the 1 series will be better to drive. I look forward to driving it, the new A3 and Golf.

I wonder if a straight rather th...
The new one looks too similar to the 2series AT at the front 3/4 view, with a raked pointy nose and high belt line. The older model is better proportioned qith the flatter longer bonnet and larger greenhouse and in my eyes is better looking than the new one.

Surprisingly it does not photograph well. But those areodynamic bumpers need to be appreciated in real life. Surprisingly it's very erotic when you put your hand and fell your way along the sculpture. All grooves and curves. Certainly something different.
Using erotic to describe the 1 series hatch....really?

That's why I'm pleased to have recently ordered an F20 M140i. Production ends next month mine will be one of the last ones built.

However I think the Golf R and new A35 AMG are the best looking hot hatches.

Is it safe to say that there won't be a 3door F40? The proportions of the F21 are unique and pretty slick in the right spec.

Congratulations, you have made a very wise investment, the M140i is a stunning car. I have a friend that has a white 2018 M140i 5door and he is totally smitten with his car, I still have not gone for a ride in it, maybe will ask him when I meet with him next time in South Africa. He says the car is mega fast, so you will have to watch out for speeding tickets :D

Might not be the best car BMW offers overall but it still is the best BMW in production IMO.
Brilliant choice. It doesn't get any better for this kind of money.

PS: Hope you got the RWD with a stick.

Yes. The M140i is falwed because it needs an LSD for better traction in all conditions and softer rear springs for better traction/bite on uneven roads. I will likely buy them off market. Rear seats are cramped to but the engine and gearbox makes up for these short comings.

The new M135i will be very popular go-fast high limit car.

BMW has been missing a rabid point and squirt car that anyone can drive fast and the M135i will be it. The Golf R and S3 are extremely popular because of their capabilities to be driven on any road and in any conditions.

As I have mentioned before, the M140i will remain RWD but the next gen will also have an LSD.

Mercedes has had huge success with the 4pot A45 AMG. There is even a guy at my gym who owns one along with a 991 turbo s and Panamers turbo s.

The E87 and F20 families have the production quality of the 3er and even the 5er (not haptic but production quality). The Golf has the production quality of a Polo. The 1er is made like a tank compared to all the other cars in the class. With 300 000 km the car still feels fresh while the others are already recycled. It's not only the RWD, its the platform on which even the 7er is based.

Any quality difference between the 1-Series and rivals is less sinful than it's shocking equipment levels. If you don't buy the shadow edition you have to option cruise control. I'm aware that options have always been part of the game for premium brands but the 1-Series has been at the bottom with no extra toys in an M140i over a 118i.

This is all the equipment that's standard on a Golf R but not the M140i.

Keyless Entry
Front & Rear Parking Sensors
12.5 inch Touch Screen Display
Android Auto & CarPlay
Adaptive Cruise Control
Electrically Folding Mirrors
Reversing Camera
Lane Keep Assist
Collission Warning Assist
Cornering Headlights with High Beam Assist

PS: Hope you got the RWD with a stick.

Unfortunately the manual gearbox in the 1-Series isn't great unlike the one in a Type R or 911. It can be notchy and take 8-10k miles to loosen up.

The 1,100kg 1.2 TSI Skoda Fabia I sold was manually and very engaging on country B roads. In traffic or long journeys into central London it was sometimes tiring to drive to the point that I would take the X3 when I know I'll encouter traffic. Needless to say the ZF8 is fast, smooth and is a perfect match for the B58 engine.

I've specced the car to be good enough for long term ownership and the ZF8 was a head over heart choice.

At least that's how it has personality.

I guess now this does not seem so bad:

The best thing about E87 was that the body design was this muscular even in its base 116d. It's design like this that shows that 2000 era BMWs will stand the test of time. Chris Bangle was a great believer in giving the body substance and a broad stance. Look at how the E63 6er wheel arches are great design definition.
