scott says also the car should be called 135M than we know it will be the 6 cil turbo for sure.

Then you have an M3 V8 and M1 6cil turbo. Then you have the new M3 in a few years that will get 6 cil turbo like the old M1 and the New M1 what engine will that be a 4 cil turbo or a real engine 6 cil atmo.

It will be a REAL I4 TT M, how about that? No NA for future M, I'm sure you got the memo....

The next generation M1 will use a four cylinder Turbo all in the name of Efficient Dynamics and making the M1 Lighter than it's short lived predecessor.

Geneva will bring 10 New products with World Premieres such as the new BMW 5er , 3er Coupe and Cabrio , additional models such as the BMW M3 GTS, 5er Gran Turismo xDrive and other exciting new products and innovations.
The European Premiere of the BMW Concept 1er Active e and Z4 sDrive 3.5is. A specific area will showcase the latest BMW Efficient Dynamics models including an absolute World Premiere using BMW's Active Hybrid technology.

The Vision Efficient Dynamics Concept Car will also be on show.

Yay, new M1 and it seems like it is a proper one. They even seem to have ditched a convertible version, which is very good. This could easily be a car for me.

I like that it is supposed to challenge cars costing two or three times the money. Now, this could mean a couple of things. 1, we are looking at a cheap car (not likely) and, 2, we are looking at a really special drivers car...

Hmm, I wonder if the engine will be the same as 340hp one from Z4 35is or a even more potent version? Good amo for the purists/whiners?

It's the send off but it also begins the dawn of a new era.
The new era of compact small sporty M models that will offer the same level of excitment and dynamics as rivals that cost two or three times more.

The M1, as it most likely will be called to provide continuity with the rest of the M cars will spearhead the direction of the next generation of compact sports models.
Although for european customers BMW will offer a rawer GTS stripped out model with a drop in weight and key equipment for keen enthusiasts but will not be available in some markets due to strict regulations regarding federalisation.

Although the next 1er Will spearhead a range topping M variant as part of it's portfolio. This car will not arrive until late 2013. BMW will offer two varying performance models using a turbo charged four cylinder- That will carry the Tii badge and be available as a 3dr Sporthatch , Coupe and Cabrio as an entry performance model. By adding the Sporthatch to the mix allows BMW to appeal to core markets where the hatch is king and have a rival to The VW Golf GTi and Audi S3.
BMW will also offer a Performance diesel in Tii specification.

Accompanied by this will be the Z2 Twins. Modern interpretations of the 328mm Roadster and coupe and using the same lightweight philosophy.

Expect to hear more "Officially" about the BMW M1 in a matter of weeks. ;)

Is the send off going to look like this?

They can better be in hot wetter testing most turbo s have overheating problems when on full attack on track.

My evo 6 turbo broke at 25 degree outside temp on zandvoort track.

They can better be in hot wetter testing most turbo s have overheating problems when on full attack on track.

The long term test 135i that Evo reviews went into limp mode after one and a half hot lap at Bedford. Form what I gather, that was in December.

A car like the M1 will be seriously hard driven on track and failures will not be accepted. Even less so if the failures are because of the turbo technology that many such users did not want in the first place.

Thought this was worth posting, although I wouldn't take much notice of it.

The 1-series M car which BMW M Division boss Dr Kay Segler is so keen to make is far from a done deal, according to senior BMW sources.

At the launch of the new 5-series (which you'll be able to read all about on PH soon), we collared one BMW suit-type to ask him how the plans were going for the hot 1-series.
He was reluctant to reveal any concrete plans either way about the proposed car, but did say this: "The thing you have to remember about BMW is that every model must make money, so the question is: could we make this happen with a 1-series M? Besides, what would you call it? You couldn't call it an M1."
We also managed to grab a few words with BMW chairman Dr Norbert Reithofer. 'Is the 1-series happening?' we asked him. Not a chance of him telling us straight, unfortunately. The only response we got was a wry smile and this: "A 1-series M? That might be a good idea..."
So will we see a hot M version of the 1-series? It seems BMW hasn't discounted the possibility, but that car will certainly have to sing for its supper.

PistonHeads Headlines

As posted by everybody's favourite BMW employee:

The M1 will differ from the standard 1er with a more muscular appearance especially at the front which receives a trapezoid grille flanked by two intakes to allow air to cool the six piston brakes. The larger grille at the front of the car also allows air into the High Performance Intercooler. underneath the headlights the M1 follows the typical M look by having enclosed headlights or "eyebags" this helps pronounce the front of the car and providing a more sporting look than the conventional 1er Coupe.

Above the brake ducts are tiny lip spoilers that help with airflow these help with additional "Active aerodynamics" to provide downforce. The aluminium bonnet incorporates a subtle hood bulge again to hint at the power underneath flanked by two airducts at each side with one for design symmetery. The front wings of the car are massaged slightly to accomodate the wider track and to neatly fill the arches with standard 18" 5 spoke wheels with optional 18" Competition wheels. 18" will be the optimium wheel size for the M1.

The front wings incorporate the typical M characteristic of a side vent , again the M1 is no different with a slightly shorter vent due to the proportion of front door - wing- arch accomodating the turn signal and insignia. The side sills accomodate a more sculpted appearance again indentifying the car from the standard 135i or BMW performance packet.

Like the front end of the car the rear end is wider with a look that is almost similar to the transition between the previous E46 Coupe and the E46 M3 , broader wheel arches accomodate the larger track , The classic "Ducktail" appearence makes a welcome return with the spoiler now integrated as part of the bootlid for a more cohesive look and additional aid for aerodynamics.

The rear valance/diffuser area takes it's direction from the standard 135i but with open ducts for aerodynamic purpose , the duct is seperated by typical M quad exhaust pipes.
The roof of the car receives the typical BMW M Coupe addition of a reinforced Carbon Fibre Roof to help maintain the lightweight concept.

By looking at the picture it looks as if it is testing on 19" wheels the problem here is it is a prototype using the conventional 1er Coupe bodyshell so details are kind of distorted. The rear arch being considerably offputting thanks to the size and width on the prototype. The actual car at the rear is not as wide as it is seen here.

Did you note the Fibre Carbon roof.
