Hot! BMW AG: What's Next

Latest news, trending discussions, reviews, and major updates
My wife is nagging me to sell our/her's 530xd M sport fully loaded, because she'd like to own 4 series coupe now, so if you're interested in car let me know. It's not 10 years old, but 4 and it won't drive out of my garage under 45k € which nis the current value of it in Croatian market. :D
Thanks my friend, but I'm not interested in spending 45k for something that burns taxi fuel.

But, it's my birthday today, so if you want to offer an extra discount, I might consider it!

:p

Because of this taxi fuel crap it's 50k for you and happy b-day, old fart. :D

Well, it's pretty much 50-50, right? So one of you will get it right :)

Will share more shortly, just a bit too early.
It'll be the Cabrio.

Oh dear...

That would actually be a bit disappointing. With an abundance of in-motion video footage as well as photographs of 8 series/M8 cabriolet prototypes, a Geneva concept presentation would not be much of a...well...surprise. As appealing as it may be.

But a Gran Coupe ? In light of the new Audi A7 Sportback , Panamera II and M-Bs' double-prongued C257/X290 assault on the 4 door (incl. liftback) sedoupe segment, an entry by BMW would be as exciting as it would be...natural.

Would it be a genuine 4 door, like the F06 6 series/M6 GC ? Or perhaps a liftback ? A shooting brake would be very interesting as well.

Oh, please no, no and no! Noone needs that "$h!t!

I dunno...

I thought that the shooting brake concept worked well on the Aston-Martin Vanquish Zagato.

But yes...I myself do prefer the "sedoupe" configurations as well.

It's not 50/50. The cabrio is near done as seen in the spy pics. And we haven't seen ANYthing regarding a GC. It could indeed be the GC, but I give that 20%. We have these rumors about the GC being a 6er in name, too

Oh, please no, no and no! Noone needs that "$h!t!

Why. That'd be absolutely awesome. And they should make an M version too, to have something to fight the E63 S Estate, RS6 and Panamera Shooting Brake (sportback? whatever they call it..).

Buzzkill alarm for GC fans:

Motor1.com is alluding to "friends at BMWBLOG" who are confident that the concept will not be a Gran Coupe.

BMW stand security at the Geneva Show: "Move along, folks. There's nothing to see here.".

No, it wouldn't in my eyes. Make an M5 Touring to fight those you mention. As far as 8er is concerned, only coupe, cabrio and GC. No need to do any shooting brake mockery with it's beautiful desing.

I welcome that.

...well...

The F06 6 series Gran Coupe Concept came out of nowhere just prior to the 2010 Beijing Motor Show.

Some hope for GC fans after all ?

Oh God, I'm really flogging this

BMW M8: concept of 600bhp model will be shown at Geneva motor show
Hot 8 Series was confirmed last year when an endurance-racing GTE variant was revealed for the D

BMW will reveal a concept version of its M8 performance car at the Geneva motor show this March, previewing the look and styling of its 600bhp range-topper.

According to BMW Blog, the German brand will show a car that's based on the M8 but different to the coupé it has recently previewed. This suggests the car will be a convertible.

BMW refrained from commenting on the claim when contacted by Autocar. Nevertheless, Autocar understands that the brand's Geneva reveal will foreshadow a summertime launch for the production 8 Series, which is due on roads this November. The M version is due next year.

The high-performance M8, which spawned a racing car that's already competed in this year's Daytona 24 Hours, will sit above the regular 8 Series and use BMW's twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 engine. It will produce around 600bhp, placing it above the latest 592bhp M5 and giving it more firepower than the Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupé, which has 577bhp.

Our spy photographers have captured both hard and soft-top versions testing in public, showing the large air intakes, quad exhausts and more aggressive styling that the M model flaunts to illustrate the added potency compared with the rest of the range.

M division president Frank van Meel said of the new line-up: “The conception and development of the standard BMW 8 Series and the M model run in parallel. The future BMW M8 will build on the genes of the 8 Series and augment its DNA with added track ability and generous extra portions of dynamic sharpness, precision and agility. It all flows into a driving experience that bears the familiar BMW M hallmarks and satisfies our customers’ most exacting requirements.”

“We have been involved with the wider 8 Series project from the very beginning," van Meel told Autocar. "Our challenge as engineers was actually to ensure that the standard car wasn’t too sporty for its customers, because we wanted the M8 to feel like a proper step up. Also, because not all 8 Series customers want an M car.”

Insiders suggest the 8 Series and M8 will use the same platform as both the 7 Series and 5 Series, and that the M car will share much of the drivetrain of the four-wheel-drive M5.

“For now, I can’t confirm that,” said van Meel, “except to say that we have watched the luxury sports coupé market closely and we see lots of four-wheel-drive cars within it already. We have also already proven that our M xDrive four-wheel drive system doesn’t adversely affect the handling purity of the new M5. There’s nothing to fear from four-wheel drive.

“We certainly want to make a statement with this car. It will sit at the very top of our model range and, for now, we have no confirmed plans for any series production model above it, so we understand it must have a specification suiting its position in our hierarchy.”

The M8 GTE racing car will next compete as part of a factory BMW effort in this year's Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race, marking the brand's first factory effort there in six years.

The M8 will carry a heavy premium over the standard 8 Series, so a starting price surpassing that of even the i8 supercar is certain; the Mercedes-AMG S63 Coupé kicks off at around £131,000, so the M8 should remain competitive with its Stuttgart rival.

Strategically, an 8 series GC would not be a smart move, imo. The upcoming 8 series already suffers from a rather diffuse positioning, anyway. Is it a sportscar or a luxury tourer, an AMG GT or a Maserati GranTourismo? Critics say (with good reason): It cannot be any of that, it is a re-badged 6er. So it competes in a lower segment.
If BMW should really recreate the entire former 6 series line-up in 8 series guise, there will be a backlash. It would be wiser to go for a 9er (without GC label), use 7er/8er tech, and give it a unique design (and maybe even some unique tech, in terms of HMI, for instance). In this segment, BMW could/should/must(?) risk something. If they don't, Mercedes (and Porsche etc.) will take the cake.

This is where my head is at too. I'd rather see a 9-er than an 8GC.

Though it does beg the question of why BMW seems happy to leave such a hole in the line-up where the popular 6GC was.
