Hot! BMW AG: What's Next

Latest news, trending discussions, reviews, and major updates
I didn't say that the solution goes by the name Lada.

All I'm telling you is that all this over-complexity is kind of un-neccessary. Cars are nowadays built so that they need to be replaced after about a decade, as they are engineered to be un-economical to repair.

I was just speaking to a good friend of mine, who's 5 years old A6 is having its engine disassembled, because its too damn complex to figure out where water leaks. That's a 4 digit sum for something that should cost 2 digits. Apparently, a factory refurbished engine costs slightly more than locating the problem with this one.

The funny thing is, that the answer to all this complexity is the electric car.

In the future. Cars will be less complex, engines will be replaced and powered by a small chip the size of a sugar cube.

BMW Group Design Chief: “We’re going to clean things up”

At the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, BMW Group Head of Design Adrian Van Hooydonk has reiterated his commitment to clean up the design of BMW cars in favor of fewer lines.

“We’re going to clean things up; we’re going to use fewer lines; the lines that we’ll have will be sharper and more precise,” van Hooydonk told Automotive News. “On the interior, we’re going to have fewer buttons — the cars will begin to show their intelligence, so you have to give it less input.”

BMW aims to move away from the now famous branding of “same sausage, different lengths”, made famous by Audi design critics in the last decade. Van Hooydonk says the new design language will pull each car further from “its next of kin” in the model lineup. “You’ll find the cars will become stronger in character and separated more from one another.”

Some of the models launching this year are the Detroit debuted X2, followed by the redesigned X4 and X5 crossovers, the new 8 Series coupe, the redesigned 3 Series sedan, the largest BMW SUV to-date – X7 – and the roadster Z4.

Over the last few years, the perception of the brand by BMW fans and consumers has suffered in part because of staid redesigns that failed to overhaul a vehicle’s looks significantly.

“Or maybe you could say the competition changed more than we did,” van Hooydonk said. “In the world that we live in now, that’s not enough,” van Hooydonk said. “There is more competition now. The world has changed. It’s faster pace. So our design needs to change faster as well.”

“Everything that comes out from now going forward will play a big role,” van Hooydonk said. “The 8 series is going to combine all of these elements in a very new shape.”

BMW Design Chief Hints That A Supercar Could Be On Its Way

There have been talks about a BMW supercar for a very long time now, and, unlike other execs in the past, the brand’s Head of Design, Jozef Kaban, has not dismissed the idea.

Speaking to BMWBlog at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, the former Skoda chief designer, who moved to BMW last year from the VW Group, where he helped pen the Bugatti Veyron, among others, leaves the door open for a potential exotic.

“I came to BMW to help with other thinking, to give them another opportunity to think about [new] things”, said Kaban. “BMW is doing great cars, maybe there is space to dream about the next [new car], maybe something more extreme“, he added. This can be interpreted as a tongue-in-cheek reference to a future supercar.

The spiritual successor of the M1 hasn’t been given the green light yet. Even so, previous reports spoke about possible electrification, as it could be developed together with their motorsport division, bringing some tech from Formula E to the road.

BMW’s supercar would apparently challenge the likes of the Mercedes-AMG Project One. However, it needs to be approved for production first, and one of the execs who needs to sign it off it is the company’s Vice President, Dirk Hacker.

Hacker doesn’t dismiss it, either, as he said, towards the end of 2017 that “if we came to the decision to do a super sportscar, then we could do that”.

I've been thinking, if I were to buy a 10 year old F10, what would it cost me in repairs...

It will still be costly but could be reasonable if you choose the right gearbox + engine combo.

Below is a recent photo of a bus/shuttle park in Kampala, Uganda. They are driving the same car models used 15-20 years. Why haven't they progressed to modern cars?

Because owning one doesn't require befriending a "electronic specialist" with magical powers or having access to a good dealer network. Toyota vans from the 1990s are reliable and can be repaired by anyone with basic mechanical understanding. Only in extreme circumstances do you have to write one off.

If it is a 520d with a manual it will cost nothing more than a 1er or a 3er with the same underpinnings, and there are a lot of issues that a keen hobby mechanic can still solve by himself

My wife is nagging me to sell our/her's 530xd M sport fully loaded, because she'd like to own 4 series coupe now, so if you're interested in car let me know. It's not 10 years old, but 4 and it won't drive out of my garage under 45k € which nis the current value of it in Croatian market. :D

Oh they hold up some good value over there then..
Depending on the milage it would be worth around half to 60% of that in sweden.

96k kilometers... Yep, those 3.0 diesels with xDrive and M Sport hold up good value, but it's more or less the same as in Sweden since the car costed 92k € 3 years ago and now it's worth 45... ;)

Ah yes the msrp is insane. 92k for a 5er Jesus.

It appears it will not be long to we see the first development prototypes of the all new 4er. They are expected to break cover this Spring. Certainly will cause debate with its new direction influenced by the 8er and its distinctive facia which is anything but evolutionary.

BMW to unveil a new concept car at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show

The 2018 Geneva Motor Show is just a month away and BMW is in full preparation for the first major European car show of the year. As always, the Bavarians will be well represented on the Swiss auto show floor, with theBMW X4 allegedly making its world debut, alongside M5 Competition Package and to our surprise, a new concept.

According to our sources, the M Division will have a surprise in store for us. The concept debuting in Geneva is based on the 8 Series and M8 platform, but it will be different in style than the M8 Coupe previewed so far.

Before rumors start to spread like fire, it’s our duty to shutdown any speculations around a future M supercar. The concept to be unveiled is a preview of a future production car, but within the 8 Series family and its design.

BMW is expected to release more details within the next few weeks, so stay tuned for details.

It would be nice if it would be the 8er GC, but I guess the Cabrio is more likely.
