Future Cars: BMW’s 2018 6-Series GT is a better looking Oddity

Automakers baffle us at times with unusual models that offer answers to questions no-one really asked. BMW’s 5-Series Gran Turismo is one of those cars; a cumbersome attempt at a more practical 5-Series. What was wrong with just offering the 5-Series wagon to all? Sigh…

Nevertheless, BMW still sees potential in such an offering, as they’re in the final stages of prototype testing of the 5 GT’s successor. However this time round, it will fall under the 6-Series GT banner, whilst the better looking Gran Coupe is said to disappear. Color us perplexed.

Strange, But Better Looks:

Improving on the departing 5-Series GT is no hard feat; whilst the stodgy and upright proportions are still there, the overall look is much better balanced.

Frontal styling borrows heavily on the newest 5-Series, albeit with a more sculptured appearance below the twin-kidney grille. Side sheetmetal surfacing is restrained in typical BMW fashion, whilst the Hofmeister kink appears rather diluted. The look from the rear is conventional, albeit with an active spoiler and split-opening hatch.

Under The Skin:

The Gran Turismo will be based off BMW’s CLAR (Cluster Architecture) modular platform, shared with the G30 5-Series. This means it will benefit from significant weight reduction; yielding better fuel efficiency along with enhanced performance and handling.

Whilst not much is known about the cabin, one shouldn’t expect it to differ vastly from the 5-Series. The main point of difference here will be the elevated seating and increased cabin dimensions to offer space comparable, if not better than the 7 Series.

TwinPower Powertrains:

Engine variants will mirror that of the new 5-Series; this means we’ll see turbocharged inline four and six engines in both diesel and petrol format. Rear wheel drive is standard and xDrive (AWD) is optional across most of the range.

For the CO2 conscious, a four-cylinder plug-in hybrid version will debut under the 530e iPerformance branding. This 185 kW/252 hp unit will offer astounding fuel economy and ultra-low CO2 emissions for its size.

We could see a performance jewel in the range with the M550i V8, which pumps out 462hp and 479 lb-ft of torque in the sedan. Power in this model is put to thee pavement via all four wheels and an eight-speed auto.

The Opposition?

Definitively speaking, BMW basically have a segment all to themselves - perhaps this is why the Bavarian manufacturer is giving the GT a second shot? Nonetheless, Audi’s A7 Sportback is similar in some ways (hatch opening), though we expect the BMW to be more practical and spacious. It’s a bit of a stretch, but you could argue that conventional high-riding wagons like Volvo’s V90 Cross Country and Mercedes-Benz E-class All-Terrain could also be cross-shopped with the GT.

Expect an official debut as early as March 2017, with sales starting before 2018.

.... One proposal is to introduce a new 6er. Shorter wheelbase and 2+2 seating but effectively for children or additional luggage. Modelled on the original E9 and E24 series. A production CSL Hommage if you will. But it will be more honed and aimed at purists unlike the E Coupe. It will be a sports car but with a more traditional upright BMW Coupe slant instead of the more dynamic offerings of the 4er and upcoming 8er. It might not even receive a Cabrio/Roadster but there has to be an M variant considered.

This that you explain looks like more the intentions of new Z5...

I really do wonder whether there will be a 5er coupe that's equiv to the E coupe. Going back in history, i think E coupes were just made for the sake of making them, like the W124 coupe - i honestly see no art in it, it even looks like an aftermarket removal of 2 back doors (some might call that as classic but i don't see it), and back then there was no 5er coupe, even the 6er wasn't around during that time and BMW was doing just fine. This time round the E coupe is really a coupe, but still i think they need not make a direct E coupe competitor when the sedan is a pretty sporty design itself. And it's hard to foresee how if they dumb down the next 6er, the new 6er will be something less than its predecessor? that's not ideal...

Very curious to know how things will turn out.

I usually go to the Brussels Motor Show, but it's supposed to be every two years, and the next one wasn't supposed to be until 2018, so I've no idea why there's one happening now. Don't know if I'll be able to make it now.

This year's edition is the motorshow for Ligh Utility vehicles. The last 10 years, however, it became a show for so-called recreational vehicles like convertibles, off-road cars, etc. But now more and more brands are showing their full line-up. Nevertheless, the show in odd years remains a small one (only 8 days). In even years the show is a bigger and longer and expensive brands (Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc.) have also a separate stand. Now only from friday till sunday there is a separate hall called 'Dream cars' where exclusive automobiles are shown (i think BMW shows the 760li and the csl hommage). Honestly, I wouldn't make the trip from abroad. Keep it for next year.

Every two years there is/was a motor show. In between there always was a motor show only/mainly for bikes, leisure and commercial vehicles. Throughout the years this bike, leisure and "CV" show was becoming more and more a motor show, because brands showed their SAV/SUV models. For example BMW showed their X-range, MB the "G-models" etc. So don't expect all brands there. For example the exotic brands (Ferrari etc. are only vissible from Januari 20-22nd). More info on

Ferrari are no doubt waiting till Geneva to debut its F12 replacement.

On this site http://www.autogids.be/autonieuws/n...2017/de-verborgen-autos-op-het-autosalon.html (Dutch) 3 "Black Box / Closed Room models are mentioned.

They are forgetting the most important one ..;;)

Yes I see that I thought the E-Klasse Coupe would be shown and the Stelvio but it appears they are being kept for their European Premiere in Geneva. Which I suppose is more of a higher status global event to reveal a new car.
Geneva is going to be a good show lots of new debuts. A new Ferrari, the Range Rover Coupe,Porsche Panamera Kombi amongst others.
You can also see the closed room preview of the BMW 4er LCi and 5er Touring @ Brussels.
