5 Series (G30/G31/G38) BMW 5 Series (G30/31/32) Spy Pics & Info Discussion

The BMW G30/G31/G38 is the seventh generation of the 5 Series. Officially announced in October 2016, sales began in February 2017. Production years: November 2016-2023. Body styles included: 4-door sedan/saloon (G30), 5-door wagon/estate (G31), and 4-door long-wheelbase saloon (G38).
Agreed , but dynamics doesn't make a car a class leader the overall package does and as an overall package the F10 was a benchmark as was the E60 and E39.

With what I've read so far it seems the G30's team was given a brief to make it more dynamic than the F10 so I'm hopeful. It does look more sporty , aggressive and athletic so that's a good start.

But you specifially called out the M550i and E43, which as you know aren't bread and butter that rake in sales. Hence why I felt the need to comment on dynamics.

They have sold over 2 million units of the F10 series 5er on the count of it being competent for all areas it was needed in order to excell. Others might come forth to claim the crown on dynamics but they overlook the entire point that the majority of customers want the benchmark in competency for its segment and these competitors are not at that level of competency.
It has always 5er that has been given the title the business mans car. Because there is something about a 5er that resonates with an executive.
Globally the best selling model? The 520d.

I don't overlook that at all- the poster I was quoting was talking about the M550i and E43, which are generally not the models people are looking to merely satisfy "competent for all areas." As you noted, that's a topic for the volume models such as the 528i in America and 520d elsewhere.

I like the interior. The front is okay. The side profile is nice, and the hocky stick is beautiful. I just can't get over the rear end. Tail lights just aren't doing it for me. Its awkward, unimaginative, and just way too big ( this seeming to be a common opinion on other sites).

Would it be senseful and in users sense to re-open the spy thread for G31 / G32 pics?

So the tail was completely fake, the car will be much better resolved than the current one but you still won't call it a beauty either. Intresting variation on the third window, completely unhofmeisternish.

There is a kink there but its one of these more stylish interpretations done with decorative trim rather than outright shape.

The rear is a massive improvement. Proportions look better as well. It is a pitty the change is not as aggressive as it should. The front end has not convinced me and the third window is a clear step in the wrong direction.

The GT would be a difficult proposal to progress because there are limits to the original idea.
You still have to maintain that semi-commanding seating position and extended passenger space whilst trying to simply the roofline to make it less heavy at the rear. We can see that there has been improvement into giving the car a more fast back like shape kind of like an old Saab. With the GT series the biggest hurdle is not to make the car another SUV as there is already a line of models that cater to that segment.

I think if they can make car and the rear lower, it will stand a chance.
