the more i see from the new 5er the more i fear we get the same "pinch and zoom" way of making-design as we have seen at merc :(

I cant wait to see the camo come off slowly bit by bit and then the details will be more revealing. Its slightly evolutionary but will hopefully be a good looker.

According to Mr. Djukec (Chief Exterior Designer @ BMW saying in one of his latest interviews) 7er is conservative & conventional because customers like it so; but new 5er's styling will be more dynamic, daring, aggressive & sportier; and the new 3er will be even more so.

No info on details but we can we can guess more "dynamic, daring, aggressive" & "sportier" refers (compared to 7er) to:

  • more 3D body styling details (eg. more prominent character lines);
  • less straight lines;
  • less continuous & more "broken" lines;
  • possible double or even triple shoulder lines;
  • busier bumper & air intake styling;
  • more coupe-like silhouette;
  • sharper / pointier Hoffmeister's kink in the C-pillar;
  • even more prominent (pointier) shark nose;
  • not as tall but wider kidney grille;
  • thinner & pointier head- and rear lights.
It's a pretty standard BMW design formula so ... But I guess this time more work will be invested into detailing - to make those differences & key points even stronger & more differentiating on above-mentioned new models.

Depending on what model you go for the conservativeness can certainly be enhanced. If you take the M Sport for example.
It makes for a very dynamic looking sporting luxury sedan.

This will be further advanced with the arrival of the M760Li which showcases that the 7er is equally at home as a fully fledged luxury sedan with all its additional chrome add-ons and as a fully fledged sport-luxury sedan. It does both jobs seamlessly.

It sounds very promising. :)

Amazing no big mag has been able to do an almost perfect render out if these pictures. We have all the front end revealed. Just take this last spy pic, paint it, and paste the leaked front bumper we saw a few days ago.

Btw, SCOTT, when are we seeing the almost camo-free mules? We are less than three months from the official pics.

^ A lot of camo on that one, but it indeed more visible. Thanks for posting those pics again to refresh our memories.

You can make out the outline and shape of the intakes, especially you can see the Air Curtain is enhanced by trim. This is the standard model so the trim element would be chrome.

I'm going to predict that it will make sense for BMW to counter the E43 and E63 as follows:
Drop the 550i V8 and re-badge two models as follows:
M550i with the M3/M4 3l straight 6 to compete with E43.
M550d diesel version also with 3l straight 6 for the diesel fans.
M5 V8 all-wheel drive to compete with E63
Then further down 540i with same engine as 740i
etc, etc..

550i with M3 engine? Never going to happen. I do however think the 550i V8 is going to be dropped, making way for BMWs beloved I6.

I wouldn't be overly worried with the way the G30 is going to compete, as it's going to be the absolute benchmark in it's class once again. The new E is nice, but it's spotlight will last for only half a year :D

And an AWD M5? Sure, but optional please.
