Can you link some pictures of panorama roof on this car from the inside?

We have a panoramic roof on the second e61. It does indeed open completely, so I'd guess it does on the F11 as well. That said, it makes the cabin much noisier, works unreliably, eats headroom and weighs a tonne. Don't understand why anyone would want one.

Good boy!:)
And now, I have last job for you. Compare this picture with ones of bmw touring panoramic roof.
I get your point the actual sunroof is more or less the same size, the Mercedes one is larger though, just look at the S class vs 7er, but nevermind that.
Still why do they cut it out like that, and leave the metal surrounding it, i am aware that the whole black roof on a mercedes is NOT glass, its metal to, but it looks like glass and gives the cars that sleek panoramic roof look, the way BMW does it kind of ruins the whole thing so the question was and is why do they do it like that?
Why is there no panormic roof on the sedan? and finally will the new SEDAN get one?

There are many reasons to why you have a roof like that, and its not really to open it and enjoy the noise, its more the airyness of the cabin, and the feeling of not being cramped, it opens up the cabin alot, also it looks great from the outside imo.. And it works unreliably in a BMW, i had a -79 W123 the moon roof still worked on that one:D..

Fascinating debate about sunroofs, guys. Any excuse is valid to hate/cheelead about other/our brand.
I always get this when i ask a normal question, i admit its my own fault, anything i say about BMW is taken as hate:D
But it was just a normal question, will the new 5er sedan have one or not? And if not why?
And also why do they make it like they make it, leaving so much of the metal on the roof, while everyone else that does it wants to design it so that it looks like a continues glass surface from front windshield to roof and back down the rear windshield?

I really hope that the new 5 Series Touring will have a bigger opening Panoramic sunroof.

I'm happy with the way it's in my E61. But if it will be the same like in the F11 I wouldn't bother of having it. So at least I would save money! :D

Perhaps BMW leaves as much metal as possible because of weight. Glass weighs more than metal.

And I'm guessing having a full glass opening reduces the structural rigidity of the car and the metal which separates the two is located near the B pillar, so must help keep the car sturdy.

^ The roofs are not that different actually, MB uses glass to cover the whole roof while BMW only uses glass where the actual openings are.
MB's solution is probably more heavy, and I also think it's far more ugly. A glass black roof doesn't look good at all.

Hi everyone,

here is my capture of the 5. The 1st pic is without correction of the image, the 2nd has some enchancements in order to show some details of the front low part.
