2 Series BMW 2er Gran Coupe Speculation

The BMW 2 Series is a range of subcompact executive cars (C-segment) manufactured by BMW since the year 2014. The 2 Series was created when BMW spun-off the 2-door models (coupé and convertible) of the BMW 1 Series into a separate series.
Oh what a surprise. Another pre-launch test drive schmooze fest which is nothing but a promotion piece. I don't think I've seen a critical one yet, about ANY manufacturer. Do you think anybody would be invited back if it was? It's symbiotic. Mutually beneficial to both manufacturer and journalist. Some publicity for the manufacturer for an upco...

There have been some cons pointed out. Read all articles. But in all honesty - what's there to write negative about? It's their first Gran Coupe with FWD, so no comparison with a previous product, and it's a FWD, so we already know what to expect since we've seen it in the new 1 Series.

Highly doubt it any of the magazines that drove the car are worried they won't be invited back. This was actually at the end of the NextGen event.

There's no need for this event in terms of assessing the car - that will happen on the official launch drives. These pre-launch drives (not to mention the pre-launch ride alongs) are to serve as nothing but promotion for BMW, and to let everybody know there's a new BMW on the way. Fine. They're a business. But nobody should try to pretend they're anything more than that.

I don't disagree on that. But that doesn't mean favorable reports. The drive was only slightly shorter than on official drives, so you do get to assess the car properly.

When the car is out and can be compared directly with the CLA, then we should see some interesting things

I do not remember who started with the topic of these pre-drives in prototype form, Mercedes or BMW, but now many brands do it, it should not be so bad, it keeps them fresh in the media and will be beneficial in some aspects, for something they do it.
@Betty Swollocks, there may be a remote possibility that they are not negative in the 2 series GC pre-test because the car is good ?, I don't know, I just say

Some publicity for the manufacturer for an upcoming model, and an interesting way to fill a few pages of a magazine, tarted up to look like they've got some kind of "exclusive" access when in reality they haven't.

I do not say that what you say does not have some truth, it is difficult to be a "bad guest" to these invitations, I see it as a snack, a first contact on the car, more relaxed and controlled, to soften the shock, even to hear opinions of journalists and "make them believe" to be taken into account for final development.

"Distrust" is relevant and the media know it, that's why they cover themselves with things like this that I just found as a kind of disclaimer:

ROAD/SHOW
Editors' note:
Travel costs related to this feature were covered by the manufacturer. This is common in the auto industry, as it's far more economical to ship journalists to cars than to ship cars to journalists. While Roadshow accepts multiday vehicle loans from manufacturers in order to provide scored editorial reviews, all scored vehicle reviews are completed on our turf and on our terms.

The judgments and opinions of Roadshow's editorial team are our own and we do not accept paid editorial content.

Btw: They really liked the design of the car

Only conceptually it is similar, (same arrangement, height relationship between lights and grill) but it is much more horizontally elongated.
Personally, I find it striking, very much like the 8 series, I also love it in the 1 series, in the videos when it is seen coming from afar it looks like a superior car.

Its looking better now as more Camo is removed, I like the front grill and lights much more than the ugly 1 series front. Hope the rear will look good, but I am not a big fan on the latest slim BMW tail lights. All things indicated this could look like a mini 8GC
