The ML lost because it was "comfort biased" and not as sporty as the competition.
thats not the whole truth, they also liked the engine and it was also a "safe" and the brakes was very good too. Intresting they also found the seats in X5 to be more comfortable but the suspension was of course stiffer.

They did, but in the end...
Den dritten Platz belegt der Mercedes ML. Gediegener Komfort und eine umfangreiche Sicherheitsausstattung reichen nicht, um BMW oder Audi hier Paroli zu bieten.
Good comfort and good safety equipment and features aren't enough to compete against the Audi and BMW.![]()
If you read the score X5 beat ML in KAROSSERIE , MOTOR/GETRIEBE, FAHRDYNAMIK. In the rest of the categories (FAHRKOMFORT , UMWELT/KOSTEN) they were pretty close and in the end the total score was better for x5 than ML. Meaning in the eyes of Autozeitung X5 was more attractive package. A little more sportier ML or a Ml with stiffer suspension wouldnt help much and saftety equipment has nothing to do with sport![]()
BTW Qualität/Verarbeitung, is this interior materials they scoring?
Q7 is above X5 an ML in size but still below GL. So it's safe to say that Q7 is in a class of it's own.![]()
true crossover car that could compete much more with different segments than, say a CLS or R.Q7 is above X5 an ML in size but still below GL. So it's safe to say that Q7 is in a class of it's own.![]()

it's both materials and buildquality.
Btw, MB didn't lose BECAUSE it's more comfortoriented. It lost despite it's comfort. It wasn't enough to beat the X5.
The ML does not even try to beat the ML.

Intresting note, totally there were 46 different categories, ML succeed to beat the X5 in 10 of them and X5 beat ML in 28 categories. In the rest of the categories, they were even.

you lost me there! you meant GL. right?
First off, it's pretty obvious that Autozeitung is sporty minded. This test and the Q7 vs GL test prove that. If this were Auto Motor und Sport or Autobild, the softer car would probably have won since they're a little more biased towards comfort. That said, it's no secret that the X5 is good overall package and it's also newer. But like I told Rick, the ML is sporty, but not as sporty as the X5 and the Q7. The ML instead focuses more on comfort and offroad capability. And having driven two ML's, (ML350 and ML320 CDI), it's a pretty good handler for the roads in my area so I imagine that most people will be satisfied with it.
These tests however mean little to me because I know this is editor opinion and that people will buy these cars based on their needs and not because some magazine says the Q7 etc. is better.![]()
The only time a test means something to me is when a Lexus is being compared to the Germans.![]()
Qualität/Verarbeitung = Quality and Workmanship![]()
X5 is too uncomfortable and ML is not sporty enough therefore Q7 is the best compromise between the two plus it has more interior space/ it's more plactical.![]()
