Vs Autozeitung: X5 3.0d vs. Q7 3.0 TDI vs. ML 320 CDI

tacky translation

The BMW X5 wins the comparison test scarcely before the AUDI Q7. The safe and dynamic handling as well as the strong row six cylinder turbo-Diesel bring the new X5 on the winner route. Up to the too hard tuning to the rear suspension the BMW shines also in the comfort valuation. How good the new X5 with the surcharge-requiring adjustable absorbers and active stabilizers (adaptive drive) is, a further test must show. Then also this chapter could go in the future to the BMW. The AUDI plays trumps with enormous load volume and variable interior. It loses the crucial points opposite the BMW when braking. The Mercedes ML reserves the third seat. Gediegener comfort and extensive safety equipment do not hand, in order to offer BMW or AUDI here Paroli.

The testers find the seats in X5 both in front and back to be more comfortable than Q7 and ML but X5 has the stiffest suspension. However, bmw offer adaptive drive for an extra cost of 3250 euro which make the X5 more comfortable, meaning the suspension is more softer than without adaptive drive, the test car wasnt equipped with adaptive drive in this test.

so those who find the standard suspension stiff, he should buy the adaptive drive. I like there are options for the suspension :usa7uh:

The ML lost because it was "comfort biased" and not as sporty as the competition.

What I find weird is that here they compare the Q7 against the ML and X5, but in this comparison they compare the Q7 3.0 TDI to the GL320 CDI: a class above these SUV's. :eusa_thin

The Q7 won because it is sportier but the Mercedes GL is better offroad.

thats not the whole truth, they also liked the engine and it was also a "safe" and the brakes was very good too. Intresting they also found the seats in X5 to be more comfortable but the suspension was of course stiffer.

They did, but in the end...

Den dritten Platz belegt der Mercedes ML. Gediegener Komfort und eine umfangreiche Sicherheitsausstattung reichen nicht, um BMW oder Audi hier Paroli zu bieten.

Good comfort and good safety equipment and features aren't enough to compete against the Audi and BMW. :usa7uh:

If you read the score X5 beat ML in KAROSSERIE , MOTOR/GETRIEBE, FAHRDYNAMIK. In the rest of the categories (FAHRKOMFORT , UMWELT/KOSTEN) they were pretty close and in the end the total score was better for x5 than ML. Meaning in the eyes of Autozeitung X5 was more attractive package. A little more sportier ML or a Ml with stiffer suspension wouldnt help much and saftety equipment has nothing to do with sport ;)
Intresting note, totally there were 46 different categories, ML succeed to beat the X5 in 10 of them and X5 beat ML in 28 categories. In the rest of the categories, they were even.

BTW Qualität/Verarbeitung, is this interior materials they scoring?

Q7 is above X5 an ML in size but still below GL. So it's safe to say that Q7 is in a class of it's own.

it's both materials and buildquality.

Btw, MB didn't lose BECAUSE it's more comfortoriented. It lost despite it's comfort. It wasn't enough to beat the X5.

You go, whatever makes you accept the Q7 lost. :usa7uh:
Nonetheless, I've always said the Q7 is a :usa7uh: true crossover car that could compete much more with different segments than, say a CLS or R.

The ML does not even try to beat the X5. The X5 has always been about better onroad performance and the BMW philosophy of a driver's car. The ML has a completely different mission to perform.

First off, it's pretty obvious that Autozeitung is sporty minded. This test and the Q7 vs GL test prove that. If this were Auto Motor und Sport or Autobild, the softer car would probably have won since they're a little more biased towards comfort. That said, it's no secret that the X5 is good overall package and it's also newer. But like I told Rick, the ML is sporty, but not as sporty as the X5 and the Q7. The ML instead focuses more on comfort and offroad capability. And having driven two ML's, (ML350 and ML320 CDI), it's a pretty good handler for the roads in my area so I imagine that most people will be satisfied with it.

These tests however mean little to me because I know this is editor opinion and that people will buy these cars based on their needs and not because some magazine says the Q7 etc. is better. :usa7uh:

The only time a test means something to me is when a Lexus is being compared to the Germans. :D

Qualität/Verarbeitung = Quality and Workmanship :usa7uh:

But you know that not even the Tuareg or mighty RR aren't really taken off-road. Besides, BMW calls it a SAV. :D

X5 is too uncomfortable and ML is not sporty enough therefore Q7 is the best compromise between the two plus it has more interior space/ it's more plactical.:usa7uh:

So Q7 wins and Autozeitung journalists will have to be fired.;)
