Vs Autozeitung: X5 3.0d vs. Q7 3.0 TDI vs. ML 320 CDI

The ML does not even try to beat the X5. The X5 has always been about better onroad performance and the BMW philosophy of a driver's car. The ML has a completely different mission to perform.

I'll agree that the ML has a different strategy. But don't say it didn't try to beat the X5. We all know it did.

If Mercedes wanted to beat the X5, they could have built an SUV that would take it neck to neck with it, but they didn't. Instead, they focus on their philosophy, BMW on theirs and Audi on theirs. Autozeitung is a little sports biased, I've come to this conclusion after reading some reviews on that site, so they'd naturally pick the sportier cars.

Also, the ML is the oldest car in this comparison. Either way, these cars might compete against each other for market share, but they don't compete against each other from a philosophy point of view. :t-cheers:

This ain't an excuse either. :D

I rather read a sport biased carmag than a comfort biased carmag, hence AMS ;) But I was a little shocked when I read an old Autozeitung review were C350 beat a 330i E90 and the E500 beat the 550i.
Like I wrote earlier, in this test the X5 beat the ML in almost every category, not only driving dynamics so the X5 deserved to win. So if the ML was sportier but got less points and still won this comparison it would be fishy. The X5 won fair thanks to better scoring in most of the categories.

I dissagree. While we all can see that the ML has a different orientation, in part, than the X5, the main goal of the car is to be the best in the segment. I think we can agree that's the case with all the premium brands. They are all fighting to take over the reign of being nr1. The different idea behind the ML, doesn't change one thing about it's reason of being: taking over the NR1 spot the X5 has had in the premium SUV segment since it's arrival.

Fact is, comfort alone, is not enough. That's why they failed. The total package of the X5 is better executed and better looking than the ML. They might have different filosophies, but the idea is to persuade buyers their concept is the best. The X5, for autozeitung, and I think for many people, offers the best concept in total.

As for the ML being the oldest, I hope that was a joke ;)
