Audi RS6 saloon primed for electric (🤔) comeback in 2025
New electric model to take on the BMW i5 M60 and Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 saloons!

"Audi Sport is to resurrect the RS6 saloon as an electric-powered rival to the likes of the recently unveiled BMW i5 M60 saloon and the Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 saloon.

Scheduled for UK introduction in 2025, the new four-door performance model is planned to be sold under the RS6 E-tron name as a sibling to the RS6 Avant E-tron, according to sources at the firm's engineering headquarters in Neckarsulm, Germany.

The impending return of the RS6 saloon to the Audi line-up has been revealed 13 years after the combustion-engined model ceased production in 2010, making way for the more sportingly styled RS7 saloon at the time.

The RS6 E-tron saloon and RS6 E-tron Avant build on the upcoming A6 E-tron saloon and Avant models already confirmed for launch in 2024. Central to their performance is a newly developed electric drivetrain, elements of which have been engineered in partnership with Porsche, which will use the dual-motor system in an upgraded version of the Taycan, also due to be unveiled in 2025.

The two new electric Audi Sport models are claimed to have more performance than the existing combustion-engined RS6 Avant and RS7 saloon, with up to 600bhp and over 738lb ft of torque.

In combination with a two-speed gearbox on each motor and a fully variable electric Quattro four-wheel drive system, the two new performance EVs are shaping up to be the fastest-accelerating saloon and estate combinations yet.

Like their lesser A6 E-tron saloon and Avant siblings, the new RS6 E-tron saloon and Avant are based on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) structure developed in an engineering partnership between Audi and Porsche. It supports an 800V electric architecture as well as a silicon-carbide inverter.

Other upcoming new models based on the PPE platform include the Audi Q6 E-tron SUV and Q6 E-tron Sportback as well as the Porsche Macan Electric.

The A6 E-tron concept revealed in 2021 provides clues to the dimensions of the upcoming RS6 E-tron saloon. With a length of 4960mm, width of 1960mm and height of 1440mm, it is 9mm longer, 74mm wider and 18mm taller than today's fifth-generation A6 saloon.

Initial plans called for combustion-engined successor models to today's A6 saloon and A6 Avant to be renamed as the A7 saloon and A7 Avant in keeping with a new naming system developed under former Audi CEO Markus Duesmann. It called for electric models to receive even-numbered model designations and combustion models to switch to odd-numbered model designations.

However, the appointment of Gernot Doellner to the head of the German car maker has led to an internal review of future operations and the naming system, say insiders at the company's Ingolstadt base.

Before the new electric-powered RS6 E-tron saloon and Avant arrive, Audi plans to provide the existing combustion model with a further upgrade in the form of a car known to insiders at the Audi Sport division as the RS6 GT Avant.

Inspired by the RS6 GTO concept revealed in 2020, its twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 is claimed to develop an added 20bhp and 37lb ft over the existing RS6 Avant Performance at up to 650bhp and 664lb ft.

Prototypes of what is possibly the last non-electrified RS6 Avant model recently spied testing at the Nürburgring feature a revised aerodynamic package, including a larger wing element above the tailgate as well as a new diffuser.

Whether the new GT model will be offered in RS7 saloon guise is not yet clear, although it is claimed to be the fastest-accelerating RS6 Avant yet. Autocar has been told to expect a 0-62mph of “around 3.5sec” in combination with a top speed “limited to 190mph”.

Interesting but Tesla and Lucid have pushed the performance levels very high indeed!

No thanks

Ahhh so even the bosses of audi acknowledge the brand is stagnant. But klier who doesnt even buy audi products thinks he knows better.

Audi rs3 is the same size and weight of b5 audi rs4. Only 30hp difference. Real progress remember.

And who else remembers, that 25 years ago, audi was seen as barely above Opel. Adults from those times didnt see audi as an equivelant to bmw or mercedes.

I was a young boy, my father had a audi 80, (he really wanted a mercedes) and I used to ask people like my grandad, and family friends, why they have bmw or mercedes and why not audi, and its because it was seen as a inferior brand.

It is my generation, that helped push the audi brand, we loved the urquattro even though we werent alive during those days, the b5 s4, the rs2, the audi s2.

My generation said those are cool cars, and so within over time, audi gained popularity with my generation, those who are now late 20’s early 30’s and perhaps even guys in their early 40’s, and then audi now its mainstream and seen as a alternative to bmw or mercedes has turned its back on those people who promoted the brand.

No more sports cars, no exciting products, no innovation, just SUV SUV SUV.

Wheres the TT replacement? Wheres the modern URQuattro? Wheres the r8?

Oldschool audi a8 was cool. New one? No.

Rs6 and rs4, was niche, now mercedes and bmw offer the same products but better.

There is no longer a reason to buy a audi over a BMW or Mercedes unless you are a boring man. A librarian, a man with no fire, no passion. Its the new volvo, volvo and Polestar are more exciting, more fresh, audi is now stale. There isnt a single model in the audi brand that excites me, and i was a hardcore audi fan from 5 years old until dieselgate.

Audi as a brand is dead to me now, i will buy BMW’s and Mercedes instead. And like I said before, im not the only one, I run the ttrs and rs3 owners group and alot of the old hardcore VAG fans and owners have all moved to different brands. Audi doesnt cater to the enthusiast anymore
Just got aware of your post today ... and got instantly triggered, because I thought my elder brother was writing those lines! :p
He had the same story! Die hard fan and really "investing" into Audi back then ...starting almost 20 years ago.
Audi S4 B5 (tuned by ABT - what a monster ... but not that durable) -> RS4 (B5 - this I really loved) -> S5 (V8) -> RS5 (V8)
Then he was fed up by Audi and has turned his back on Audi. No innovation no "Vorsprung durch Technik" anymore ... all gone (with Piech?) ... you sound similar to me.

Sounds like me and your brother have gone through the similar heartbreak

Issues with Cariad software delaying product launches by over 1.5 years.

So... What the hell is going on at Audi?

He is right on.

from another VW article in Reuters I believe:
"VW had fallen behind in China during the pandemic and by the time the country began to reopen, BYD, Nio and other local brands had doubled the number of plug-in hybrid and full-electric models, with most being cheaper and better than VW’s offerings.

Those new competitors are now turning toward Europe as China’s economy stumbles.

The extra pressure comes as VW and other German manufacturers feel the strain of high energy prices in the fallout from the country’s long reliance on Russia.

Half a world away, Tesla has continued to expand and has laid claim to leadership in automotive innovation, undermining the German giant’s cash cow Audi -- alongside Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

Instead of sleek Audi sedans claiming “Vorsprung durch Technik,” Teslas have become the choice for consumers wanting to show they are on the cutting edge.

The competitive vise squeezing VW from top to bottom and from the U.S. to China might evolve into its biggest crisis since the 2015 diesel-emissions cheating scandal."

Those new competitors are now turning toward Europe as China’s economy stumbles.

They better be really quick because the European Commission is going to stop this flooding of cheap Chinese cars.

Goddamn finally.

In return, China will probably respond with tariffs on European cars, making China hopefully less interesting for the German brands again.

F'ing finally.

Go Xi, put those tariffs on German cars and make your own crap for your own people. Sounds like a win-win.

This is at the heart of it. But just as worrisome to me is that Audi's design language seems to be floundering. The 2024 Q6 e-tron SUV looks old and it hasn't even hit the road yet.
I completely agree with you. The Q6 e-Tron looks like a bigger Q4 e-Tron and thus looks dated. Even the Q8 e-Tron looks newer.

But I think the ICE A5 and Q5's new sportier styling language will be a lot more modern and new looking.

The Q6 e-Tron would've been fine if it went on sale early last year or late 2021 as originally intended, with a facelift coming in a year or two, but nope :/

Worried for the A6 e-Tron as well, as it seems to be getting the similar dated split headlights style as the Q6.

The worst part is their huge plastic grille cover? Or whatever it is.

What I already mentioned in other thread, Germans are not prepared for the EV transition not only tech wise but especially design wise. Their fake grilles are utterly cheap with stickers or extremely bad patternfilia. For now I only have hope in the Neue Klasse, but knowing Van Hoijdonk it’s very probably that it will be screwed up too.

Only Volkswagen seem to have a full overhaul of their design language in the coming few years, the German trio needs it desperately too, to start from scratch.

I love the what Porsche is doing with its EVs. Besides them, I have high hopes too with NK BMWs and the new VWs.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
