I agree that it looks very different from all the Audis we have seen so far. The R8 also had a rather stout shoulder line that is only interrupted by the wheel arches, like in the new TT.

The A5 however has an entirely new shoulder line that doesn't look like an Audi from the start. However, I think it's quite special - will this wavy thing be a one-off? I hope so.

The rear also hints at future rear light designs.
I'm not againt a new direction, but imo this isn't the right one.. the car doen't look like a it's one peace like all other Audis. It lookes like every part of it was made saparately and then everything was put together shortly before the premiere.. sorry for sounding harsh, but i'm an Audi fan as well and this is definitely not the design harmony what I was expecting!:t-banghea

Totally with you Hussein.

I don't feel as though this is any direction at all. This feels like an amalgamation design where every secion of the car seems like a different idea bonded together with some completely unrelated ideas. We're used to seeing that kind of tomfoolery come out of Ford's studio, but not Audi's.

Sure, we said the same things about the Z4's lack of cohesion when it debuted, but in the end the car was a very exciting and complex object to behold, love it or hate it. The A5, on the other hand, doesn't elict much emotion at all. I'm supposed to be feeling "sexy coupe with tons of class." Instead my brain is seeing large hatchback.

Well I think it is a great looking car .....although from some angles, I am not so in love with it. However, I can't say I am disappointed with the overall result.

While the new A5 is quite handsome, it does strike me as being a bit derivative. It doesn´t appear as though the exterior design offers anything that could be considered patently eye-arresting. Pretty, but hardly breathtaking.

Eagerly awaiting the opportunity to see this car in the metal. Perhaps only then can one fully appreciate the cars´ presence.

Try as I may... I just can't get into it. I could almost salvage a "Well, it's not very striking, but it is very classy and handsome." but the angular, and very staccato-looking rear lights break form with what could be a very black tie motif.

What happened to the playbook that sculpted the beautiful rears on the A3 sportback and R8? They tossed it out for... nothing really. It's a shape that says nothing about the car's pretentions. It's not futurist and sedate... it's not low-key and classy... it seems more like a "Transformers Shape" pulled from the Honda or Acura playbook, but even they are handling such details better nowadays.

sorry for OT but have you done your own version of A5 in your computer that we havent seen? :)
No I haven't:D

Didn't they say in the teaser that they're re-inventing the coupé with the A5? I'm sorry to say this, but : Mission Failed!

Hussein...so do you agree with me that this is not Walter's best design?

To be honest.. I'm heavily disappointed with the exterior design..
I totally agree with Sunny.. IMO the design is a step backwards after the R8 and the TT.. The wavy shoulder line doesn't do it at all.. maybe I have to see in real life first..won't take long till I do. The front is totally ruined by the hideous contra-directioned air intakes.. the whole car looks like it's been design by an external studio which was trying with all violence to use Audi's design elements on a body with a very different form language..

I'm very excited to see what Wolfgang Egger is going to do to Audi's design, becase if the Q5 id going to look like this, I think Audi needs some help.. never thought I'd ever say something like that:t-hands:

Haha, it is funny you should mention the hideous air intakes, that is one of the first thing that stuck me. The outer edge curves up in a very generic character less way, while the inner edge is straight but a very odd angle with the Audi grill and to top it all off they couldn't even center the fog lamps properly with it jutting ever so slightly into the body work above - if it was was really their intention to keep it asymmetric, that is fine, but do it in a way that it looks like a design feature and not a manufacturing flaw! I really didn't expect such shoddy work from Audi.

I get what you mean Osna. You expected a very special and avantgarde A5 and you didn't get it - instead, it's a mish-mash of everything that doesn't look coherent. I agree with you to a certain extent - I did say from the start that the rear looks awkward and the front a little too S3/B6 A4 inspired - but I'll give it more chance. Wait for more pictures. The shoulder line looks very 'thick', if you know what I mean. It has potential to be very beautiful.

Guys, notice the 4.5k redline? :eusa_doh:

Interesting!

I presume it is cause it is a TDI. You can see the TDI lettering in the rear photos.

The interior again looks very good. The general layout reminds me as an evolution of my E36 M3 interior - when BMW still did driver oriented cockpit like designs.

but 4.5 k? is it that low on bimmers as well?

Yup!

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
