Marvell shows off 10-inch Android tablet at Netbook Summit

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Unfortunately, we don't know much about this new Marvell powered tablet, but we couldn't resist sharing our impressions of the very svelte 10-inch device. We only got a few minutes to play around with the slate at the Netbook Summit, but we can tell you that it has a brushed metal back and there's an opening on the front for a camera. As for the internals, it's based on Marvell's Moby reference design, which uses its Snapdragon-class Armada 610 processor, and will run Android 2.1 Eclair. The rest will be up to whatever Marvell customer is bringing this bad boy to market -- the Marvell executive that let us catch a glance at the device wouldn't turn it on as he feared we may see the mystery customer's logo. We told you we didn't know much, but from what we saw today it sure looks promising. Now, if only we felt Android was ready Google would give us a tablet-ready version of Android...

For the third time in a row PC makers are focusing on the wrong things -- spec sheet benefits. Running a desktop OS on a tablet hasn't excited anyone in the past and won't do it in 2010. The later they realise this, the further away will the iPad be in dominating the market.

This Eee Pad is dead on arrival. Android and Web OS are the only OS that have a chance at competing against the iPad.

I couldn't believe how good (fun as well) pages was on the iPad. I've been using it for work to store and read journals etc. instead of carting around a folder full of about 30 of them. It is saving my back so far. The lack of multitasking is cumbersome and certainly distracts from the potential of the device. One thing that quirks me is all the use of HD branding for the screen and the screen aspect for video. A true 1280*720 at 16:9 would be much nicer. Even a 16:10 with a matching screen resolution would be better... The iPod application is much improved over the iPhone one.

You've found a use for one Potential? I thought you weren't a fan...:)

Whilst a 16:9 screen would be ideal for movies, it would detract from all the other functionalities of the device. Viewing photos on the iPad would be awkward, not to mention holding the device vertically. It would also wreck havoc on the thousands of applications that were designed to utilise the 4:3 screen ratio.

Objectively, I find iPad of little superior feasibility over competing or substitute devices (i.e. iPhone/smartphone or laptop). I have seen colleagues walking around carrying one in their hands, which is, frankly, comically awkward. However, I also find that such devices have their attraction. Many of its apps that I have grown dependent to in my iPhone work better on it's larger screen. It is easier and less strenuous on the eyes. In the end, such devices force a consumer to fit it within their lifestyle rather than perfectly fill a gap that was there to begin with. In that regard, the iPad is a success.

My business partner bought two and gave one to me as a gift. I use it a lot more than I thought I would, especially for email. I particularly life the Things app, which for $23.99 is overpriced, but very useful. I find myself only using my iPhone for the basic functions now. I ordered one of these cases - Noreve - Etui cuir Apple iPad Tradition | Noreve - Haute Couture for Mobile Devices - as I found the Apple design case to be cumbersome.

On a side note, the Video on iTunes is ridiculously overpriced.

Video is ridiculously overpriced - The result of Hollywood going to war with Apple and the iTunes store. They don't want to be put in a box like the music industry was, so they're been blatantly uncooperative.

Here's to hoping for some integration with Finder instead of iTunes for every piece of conceivable data . Integration with Windows Explorer just isn't going to happen this early in my honest opinion, if ever. Even better would be a remaking of iTunes into a suite like iLife instead of one, big bloated piece of software. Again, probably not.

Want the truth? I haven't found a use for the iPad outside of novelty. My honest opinion is that it is a jacket of some trades (not all) and a master of none. I actually hardly use it save read The Australian and listen to some music in the morning before work if I have time. Quickly got over the digital media experience as watching TV Shows and Movies on the iPad is 'crap' due to the screen aspect. I'd also like Apple to explain how the content is HD when the screen resolution doesn't even support 720p?

My stance on the iPad is that so far it's an experimental product -- a new product for a new audience. Both consumer and Apple haven't entirely figured out the full purpose of the device and how it can be made purposeful. It's so easy to fall in love with it at first sight and buy it for the wrong reason.

It's popular though. I see many users in London, browsing the next on it -- the 3G version seem to be dead popular. But then there is the iPhone with serve the same purpose, i.e reading a blog, news or checking facebook on the go -- simply passing time. If you have a laptop then there is a chance the iPad might take a backseat in the home because you can't comfortable have 8 browsing tabs, PDFs and MS Word documents open at the sametime.

I'll eventually buy one but right now I'm stitting out until IOS4 and iPad 2.0 for Apple to convince me that the device is sustainable. If they can make multitasking work, then the device will truly come of age as a netbook replacement.

I'm very doubtful that the aspect ratio will change given the number of years Apple has had to develop the iPad. Just look at how the iPhone has featured the same form factor since day one. It seems as though Apple feel that the right aspect ration has been chosen. If they do decide to a fundamental change of that kind then it will be done with 2.0 -- but probably not as it would completely screw the early adopters who will be left with an obsolete device which no developer wants to produce apps for.

Two interesting posts just when I was considering buying one lol the two other things I think missing (but might not happen) are lack of usb and camera. I have heard a camera will be in ipad 2.0 but I doubt there will be usb ports. Does the screen ratio aspect really affect viewing videos etc? Also, I was thinking 32gb wifi only model as I wouldnt need to use much data. Can always go the mifi route if I end up needing data right?

4:3 is terrible for video as most movies are filmed in 16:9 or even "thinner" aspect ratios meanning that if viewed on the iPad you'll end up with massive black bars i.e wasted real estate. So although the screen is 9 inches or what ever, the movie will merely be using 5-7 inches.

SD-Card reader will be built in and so will usb port inevitably. But with Apple, you always have to wait years for a device to become everything you want. Macs just recently got built in sd-readers despite other laptops having had it for 4-5 years back. I'd say, facetime for iPad 2.0 and USB/SD-slot for iPad 3.0.

Facetime for iPad is golden, especially the WiFi versions which will be connected to internet in homes.
