M3/M4 [Official] 2021 BMW M3 and M4 [G80 & G82]

The BMW M3 is a high-performance version of the BMW 3 Series, developed by BMW's in-house motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. M3 models have been produced for every generation of 3 Series since the E30 M3 was introduced in 1986. The BMW M4 is a high-performance version of the BMW 4 Series automobile developed by BMW's motorsport division, BMW M, that has been built since 2014. As part of the renumbering that splits the coupé and convertible variants of the 3 Series into the 4 Series, the M4 replaced those variants of the BMW M3. Official website: BMW M

In car, M3 engine sounds far better. Not sure how much is fake via speakers etc. But the way it slurs through the gears (vs snappy shifts in the 911) is so tragic.

Any reviews of the manual? That is the biggest redeeming quality in my eyes - only performance 4 door with manual should count for something.

As a car nut, I am finding the future increasingly depressing. A new M3 should be something to celebrate, but I'm genuinely finding it hard to justify spending that amount of money on a car that has limited appeal.

The launch control on the Gx ZF8 speed seems to be much much better than the DCT Fx, unlike the CarMag drag race this is what I expected the M4 to do to the Carrera...the Carrera S should be the real competition. Either way the M3/4 being constantly compared to a bonafide sportscar like the 911 is a huge compliment.

Yep. Maybe the ZF8 is more consistent than the DCT in the F8x in LC starts. This would then be the single? advantage of the ZF8 in the G8x over the old DCT. Don't get me wrong: The ZF8 is a tremendously good torque converter. And for everyday driving, it is clearly better than the DCT! I'm used to the "memorial second" when switching to reverse gear with my DCT in the F82 ... and also to some low speed gear change clunkyness ... but on the same time I love it, when I throw in a gear under load and the rear axle almost breaks loose. This is some sensation, which some reviewers do miss in the G8x Comp. and I can fully understand this!
A would also rather vote for a bit more roughness/sensation in a M3/4 than for everyday perfection.
I'm puzzled: Would ///M have sticked to the DCT (with a slight engineering update) in case they hadn't decided to bring the xDrive version?
In my wildest dreams, they had of course developed a new DCT, which is also AWD capable ... so a Porsche PDK spinoff :p

I'd imagine they would develop a DCT that was AWD-capable. As mentioned, PDK is AWD-capable that was co-developed with ZF. My guess is that they didn't want to plunk down more money in a niche ICE project when that could be utilized for BEV endeavors.

I hear you. But if I was in Europe, I would be hearing this instead :) -

On a serious note, I find myself on bringatrailer.com to get my car fix than new car pages/configurators these days.

I saw the car this morning. Because of covid restrictions I was unable to get on to the showroom floor to take a closer look.

Good
The front end flows and curves nicely from the front windshield down and over to the front bumper. It's appearance is less boxy and brutal than photos suggests.

Strange
I don't love the grille or hate it but lean more towards the latter. Big kidneys look great on the X7 because they are proportionate to the frontal area of the car and it's overall size.

On the M4, the large kidneys don't just look disproportionate but they dominate the entire appearance of the car. What makes them stand out more is that the kidneys don't have any grilles. Instead the slats are recessed. This gives the appearance that they are voids awaiting grilles to be fitted. o_O

Sure you can say "Naah man, the grille is dope, look at this photos of black and grey M4s. They are lit!". But what's the point of a flagship design "feature" if you prefer dark colours to conceal or tone it down.

You wouldn't see a white C63 AMG, silver 911 or orange Lamborghini and say that dark colours are a must. Either something is a design feature that should be celebrated.

I am very curious about what the LCI will be like. Surely BMW won't want the last ICE M3/M4 to bow out with such a grotesque front end and boy-ish triple exhaust tips for the M-Performance exhaust.

PS: The fluorescent/neon lime is super vivid in person.

^FWIW, that is the first pic of the M4 that I didn't find completely atrocious. Must be the angle. The fact the emission sheet(?) hides the fake side vent doesn't hurt either.

Thanks for the photo, Luw.

It's highly unlikely the front will change at the LCI, which is coming in November 2022 I believe (for the M3), and Spring 2023 (M4). If it follows previous M3/M4 LCIs, the light graphics will change inline with the base 3er and 4er, and that's about it.

Yeah I know that a big LCI change is wishful thinking given that facelifts to M-cars have historically been minimal. However the M2 received a grille change and the M5 got a moderately dramatic facelift last year.

Have faith!

I was in the UK three days ago. Had I known this M4 was at THAT BMW dealer I would have popped by to see it. I know which dealer it is, although you appear to want to keep it a secret, so I won't say anything. ;)

The car arrived last week and was driven by the chairman but had been kept parked covered under the collection bay. I will enquire about a test drive after the 12th of April when accompanied test drives are likely to resume.

Real life weight of the G80 M3 ...3767lbs or 1708kg with 1/8 options ZF8 with regular seats. Car has all fluids apparently.

Guessing you mean with fuel tank 1/8 full? So with full tank of ~16 gallons (which is on the small side), that is another ~90 lbs, so ~3860 lbs/1750kg. Maybe a manual with ceramics and buckets might be closer 1700.

Interessting! ///M seems to have done some magic to the G8x regarding traction! Although rear wheel tire width (285) is the same as in the F8x, RWD traction is a step up! You see this in drag strip tests like here (where also the obviously better applicated LC in the ZF8 plays a role) ... but even capable drivers like Chris Harris have admitted, that they first thought, they would drive already the xDrive version! So a bit weird, that ///M invested so much effort in increasing RWD G8x traction although in this generation they also have an AWD version on offer. (y)

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
