OMG man please. No it's not. Mercedes and BMW are in competition. Rolls Royce is of no direct concern to Mercedes-Benz, they aren't even in direct competition with them even in Maybach form. Rolls sits above anything Mercedes can do at this point. Like I said for Mercedes-Benz, BMW is no problem at the top end. Those brands. Not Rolls-Royce. Volume wise they're already way ahead of Rolls with Maybach as they should be considering the price difference.

This is sad though. I welcome a proper Maybach; not some Mickey Mouse blinged up copy of the S class range. The marque deserves more and the world is ready for a resurrection (I mean post corona of course)

Well they tried that, it failed miserably. This time around it has been a 1000 times more successful so the Micky Mouse formula actually works for them and that overrides anything else if you aren't buying.

Imagine an A8 with the chrome B-pillar and the Bentley logo on the C-pillar and other places or a 7 series in the same way but with the two RRs in its body and interior ...

It would look as ridiculous as those who put the Mercedes star on their Toyota Camry, but somehow for Mercedes works great with Maybach, my humble analysis is that this phenomenon occurs for the same reason that they failed as Independent brand in the 20th century and when Mercedes revived it in 2000, simply nobody knew it and did not offer anything especially notable more than its very high price, unlike something similar on a smaller scale such as Lexus where the strategy of offering more for less Price gave them the right 30 years later to charge them even more expensive than the Germans.

Perhaps as a sub-brand, now if becoming known, with the success it has and with relatively reasonable prices, the way is being opened to launch its standalone models whose concepts they announce would be distinctive and with great personality, perhaps it took time to impose something that it does not have. the recognition, tradition or cache of the English, that's why they had to carry out this long-term positioning strategy to launch again, it is the result of having missed the train when RR and Bentley were for sale, and for example not using Lagonda that without a doubt It was better known and Aston Martin was a partner of Daimler at that time.
We will see what happens but perhaps for the next generation in 7 years they will return to the ring without being a sub brand

i urge you to compare sales figures of ultra expensive cars world over from the early 2000s to 2020. I honestly think Maybach will do well with a proper resurrection (post Covid of course)

I have a feeling Mercedes continues to invest plenty of market research to inform where there dollars are best spent with the Maybach brand. Their current strategy is probably the best bang for their buck in today's climate, especially with the EQ sub brand sucking so much of the funds at the moment.

Their current Maybach strategy is working for them in regards to taking the S-Klasse higher than the 7er.
Again it shows the different characters of each car and clientele they appeal to.

I agree if done right. I don't think Mercedes can overcome what Rolls and Bentley have at the top of the market right now. It would take another 600 level car, I don't see it happening.

Its a gamble they took and it paid off well for them as the Maybach receipe has worked with the number of cars sold in China been probably more than they expected. The benefit of the Maybach S-class is the rear seating position and feeling of space and its a perfect car to be used as a limo. Only negative is its not a standalone and more exclusive car and based on an extended S-class platform

they tried that and failed.

Last time I was in London I saw a Lagonda Tarif , what an imposing vehicle, I can't understand why they didn't make more of them, they sold everyone they built. I'd take on of these over a dolled up S Class Maybach any day.

I love the Lagonda, but they didn’t make the interior special enough, it was basically a DB9 interior and at a $1 mil, it wasn’t exactly cheap. However, it was not worldwide homologated (wasn’t officially sold in the US to my knowledge). I was hopeful when I saw the new electric concepts which had the same ethos as the original Lagonda for the ‘70s. I hope AML makes them under their new management. Would make a great competitor for Rolls-Royce and Bentley.
