Macan 2014 Porsche Macan

The Porsche Macan is a compact luxury crossover SUV (D-segment) produced by Porsche since 2014. It is the smaller SUV from Porsche below the Cayenne. The first-generation Macan went on production from February 2014 with petrol and diesel engine options. In 2024, Porsche released the second-generation Macan which is a battery electric vehicle built on the dedicated Premium Platform Electric (PPE) EV platform.
So Martin since you class my post as 'old' are you saying you are happy that every post Kilcrohane makes is turns into an anti-JLR/Autocar rant?

Happy? My happiness has nothing to do with it.

Kilcrohane repeats his anti-JLR diatribe in a certain way: he finds something of interest / worth reading and then puts his typical slant on it. I'm not condoning it, nor will I say that I don't derive a certain amount of amusement from his well-written though potentially vexing posts. At least with Kilcrohane what he says is the same yet not.

All you ever have to say regarding his posts is the same, over and over again. It's personally directed, obvious, boring, repetitive and pointless.

oh do get over yourself.

Regards the Autocar blog piece by Fatboy Saunders, even the A/Car forum regulars have called it out - that is, a veiled, sly, underhand attack on the Macan, dressed up as some critique of 'sporty SUVs' generally.

Hmmm as of this minute there are only three comments on this article, 1 agrees with him, the other two semi agree, nobody has called him out on it, do you really think others can't click on links and read

Well at least I didn't say I dislike the person. But if nothing else I now know where you stand on this constant thread manipulating to service his own agenda.

Viewed the Macan in person for the first time this morning. It is waaay too small for me. Especially at the price.

This vehicle is much smaller than the Cayenne and there is no way my Golden Retriever will fit in it.

Porsche Offering Short-Term Boxster, Cayman Leases Until Macan Hits Dealers

Although the 2015 Porsche Macan officially went on sale last month, buyers may have to wait at six months before their vehicles arrive as production ramps up. Not wanting to lose prospective buyers to this early issue,Automotive News is reporting that Porsche is offering buyers open-ended, short-term leases on either a Boxster or Cayman.
With Porsche hoping that as many as 80 percent of Macan buyers will be new to the brand, this unique lease offer means that buyers won’t have to wait six months (or more) to drive their first Porsche. The open-ended lease contract means that anyone who orders a Macan can drive a Boxster or Cayman until their Macan arrives. Not only are the Boxster and Cayman priced about the same as the 2015 Porsche Macan, which starts at $49,900, but if you’re first timer to the Porsche brand, the Boxster and Cayman are both entertaining introductions.

The 2015 Porsche Macan went on sale in the middle of May, and based on its sales numbers that month, this is going to be quite a hit for Porsche. In just two weeks, Porsche sold almost as many Macans (1,263) as it did Cayennes (1,294); the Cayenne is currently Porsche’s best-selling products. In its first year on the market, U.S. sales of the Macan will be limited to less than 10,000 units due to supply constraints, but that number could increase to 18,000 annual units by next year, if needed. On a global scale, the report says that Porsche’s Leipzig, Germany, plant will initially have the capacity to build 50,000 Macans each year, but, again, Porsche could increase capacity if the demand is there.

In addition to keeping its new buyers happy, Automotive News also says that Porsche’s short-term lease deal will also help to temporarily improve the sales of the Boxster and Cayman while giving dealers some low-mileage used cars to bolster their pre-owned inventory. Through May, the Boxster and Cayman have combined for a total of 3,334 sales, which is more than the Panamera but fewer than the 911.

Porsche seriously considering Macan S E-Hybrid, rules out three-door version

Using the same powertrain as Cayenne & Panamera S E-Hybrid
Porsche's SUV sales and marketing director Julian Baumann has told Motoring a plug-in hybrid version of the Macan is in the works.

Although a launch date has not been confirmed, the Macan S E-Hybrid will likely be introduced in 2015 and will feature the same hardware setup as the Cayenne and Panamera S E-Hybrid models. Both of them make use of a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine rated at 333 HP (245 kW) teamed with an electric motor generating 95 HP (70 kW) to provide a combined output of 416 HP (306 kW) and 590 Nm (435 lb-ft) of torque.

The bigger and heavier Cayenne S E-Hybrid sprints to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.9 seconds so the Macan S E-Hybrid should be considerably faster. In addition the all-electric range of up to 36 km (22 miles) offered by both the Cayenne & Panamera S E-Hybrid is expected to increase since the Macan S E-Hybrid is going to be significantly lighter than the two.

On a related note, Baumann ruled out the possibility of a three-door Macan saying that demand for such a model would be low.

That blue on rear looks great! I really do like this car a lot, my favourite SUV!

I find this very interesting. Look how hard the electronics brake the front left wheel - it locks! Based on the rolling friction being greater than sliding friction, this seems weird, yet when the wheel locks, the Macan tends momentarily understeers (or just slides like laws of physics suggest), and then when it finds traction again, it manages to steer again into the lane.

@martinbo did you see this one?

There seems to be a reaction of Porsche (link in Dutch: http://www.autoblog.nl/nieuws/porsche-nee-onze-macan-is-niet-onveilig-video-71149#post-71149).

Porsche says; “a deliberately applied intervention to prevent the car from rolling over
“As the video shows, lane changing can be completed stably and safely. What is more critical in this situation is if the vehicle were to roll over or the rear were to break away. The vehicle demonstrated none of these instable states (rollover, oversteer, wheel lift) at any time”

Porsche calls it Active Rollover Prevention (ARP) system, which is always active "irrespective of whether Porsche Stability Management (PSM) is on or off.

Yes very strange. As roll sets in the car looks like it wants to naturally understeer but the front left brake suddenly locks and then it gains traction back on that front left wheel and it steers back in. You would think with the front wheel locking it would understeer even more but maybe the split second lockup makes it slow enough to regain traction and steer in line

Porsche Macan Criticized by CNET for Complicated Infotainment
d00a861fdf5644421620e934aef867f8.webp

When Porsche launched the Macan, it shipped off every reporter it could find to Norther Africa, where they experienced the joys of driving a car that's both Cayenne and Cayman in one very attractive package. Everybody quickly forgot about their misgivings and returned to the civilized world with one conclusion: "it's nothing like the Audi Q5."

Very few people had something bad to say about it, except maybe that it behaved badly in the famous Scandinavian moose test. CNET's test drive reporter Brian Cooley bucks that trend today, balancing the good with the bad in a non-glamorized report that covers some of the flaws built into the German SUV.

The biggest niggle Cooley had was that the infotainment system was complicated to use. He calls it "death by a thousand cuts", describing the many things wrong with Porsche's way of doing things. There's the fact that it doesn't have live searches like Audi and that voice commands only work according to the screen you're in. So if you want navigation and you're in the radio screen, it's not going to happen.

Porsche interior design philosophy is that every major function needs to have its own dedicated button. This saves you the trouble of having to surf through the menus, but also results in huge clutter, an ergonomic disaster of sorts.

On paper, having a separate button for "Sport" and "Sport Plus" driving modes is good. But in reality, it's like having a special key on your keyboard for "oo" just because it's used in common words like food, good and school.

Current Porsche owners will not have a problem, but the Macan is a brand ambassador and most of its buyers are first-timers, so an interior that requires the memory of an elephant could prove problematic.

Between that and the fact that Porsche asks you to pay extra for equipment everybody needs, the Macan reveals that it's a sportscar that doubles as a family vehicle and not the other way around. And even though they've been beaten in dynamic comparisons, the BMW X3 and Audi Q5 are still valid buying choices. Because, let's face it, nobody actually needs a 400 horsepower "Porsche crossover".
