They really have to make this one perfect though. Like all the previous SL's.

I almost want to say that the SL design might be more imperative to get right, then even the S. The "S" is a more important model of course, it gets more attention and speaks for the brand far more, gets taken more seriously, etc. (SL is a fun toy of the M-B brand, and rightfully so), but the SL CAN NOT have a "soft" offering for it's super long 10+ year running.

M-B have nailed every SL for their decade, and it just couldn't happen where they'd have an SL that would be anything less than one of the nicest looking 2-Doors on the road for its entire production run.

Why is everybody under the assumption that the next SL would still have a 10-year lifespan ? Things have changed. Even Ferrari is moving away from its 10-year-two-facelifted-model cycle and so is Lamborghini. The Ferrari 599 replacement has been officially announced for 2012 and it's not a facelifted 599 but a totally different sheetmetal.

With so many competition in its lifespan, the next SL would have 6-7 year lifespan, you can count on it.

Well Euro cars are still doing the 7 year lifespan, and that doesn't seem to be changing anytime soon.... And won't need to, as long as these guys continue to push the envelope and over-engineer the cars and set the tone for the next flurry of design trends enough.

That being considered, either the SL will stay at 7 years like the rest, or more realistically, continue to be produced through perhaps 2 facelifts. No way will it be on the market for less time than its makers fellow models.

Sure seems that way. It takes away from the SLS if you ask me. Still looks rather good though.

Points taken but you must remember the SLS is still an SL (sport-light)
it`s just more of a sporty car hence the S. (It was the same with the SLR) MB already had the new SL in mind when thay were designing the SLS.

It appears that this newer version of the SL will be more Sport and less GT package wise. The 2013 version should lose at least 200 to 400lbs with more aluminum use compared to the current version with far better driving
dynamics.

Does it really appear to be more Sport? Why?.

PS. This should probably be moved to the SLK section?

I hope these cars (new S/CL/SL) really move the automotive game onwards. Mercedes is seemingly bursting with new products and tech for the next 12-24 months of introductions.

Is that the final shape of the front lights? They look a lot like the pre-facelift C-Class lights.
