S-Class W221 First drives: Mercedes-Benz S-Class 2013

The Mercedes-Benz chassis code W221 is the fifth generation S-Class, produced from August 2005 until June 2013. The W221 S-Class was unveiled at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show as the successor of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W220) and the predecessor of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222).
For folks who prefer the touchscreen in the rear center armrest, it's order code 856 business telephony. The later option may not have been installed on some press vehicles.

Here's a pic. :)

PS. It's also a remote control for the rear seat comfort package.

The Mercedes Phone says "Apple iPhone" on it. Does it mean it is simply pairing with an iPhone on board, or is it an actual iPhone that has been custom-built for MB?

Verdict

5 STARS

Mercedes has done it yet again. The S-Class has always been everything a luxury limousine should be, and this 2014 incarnation takes all the elements that matter – technology, luxury and comfort – to another level. While the S350 BlueTEC may not offer the sportiest drive in its class, if that’s what you’re after, there’s always the mighty S63 AMG version.

Now we’ve driven a right-hand-drive model on battered UK tarmac, but it’s taken none of the shine off our initial impressions – in fact, it’s only served to enhance them. The bumpier the road, the more you can appreciate the cosseting ride and cushioning adjustable air-suspension. In fact, even in its stiffest setting the S-Class is still more comfortable than rivals. Even better, the S500 sets up the suspension based on the car’s readings of the road ahead.

Makes that one review where the S rode so badly even more of an outlier.

in Apple Store it is an app called MB TOUCH.It connects to the car

Wow the acceleration is stupendous and the engine noise amazing! Love it!

I simply don't understand Autocar how they can give a car which has a basic package that is groundbreaking and best in class by far only 3 1/2 stars, they probably the only magazine in the world to give a version of the new S Class 3 1/2 stars!

They prefer the S 350 BlueTEC L SE Line, it seems? :)

The award-winning S-Class has become one of just eight vehicles to join Autocar’s exclusive club of 5-Star Cars.

The Autocar road test – among the most detailed and exacting of its kind - put the S-Class under intense scrutiny – making the full five star rating an achievement worthy of celebration at the annual Autocar Stars celebration last night.

Chas Hallett, Editor of Autocar commented: ‘The S-Class is calm, sophisticated and rewarding, it is a technical knockout that redefines what a luxury car should be.’

Gary Savage, CEO of Mercedes-Benz UK Limited said: ‘In the S-Class we knew we had something special, this has been reflected in its popularity here in the UK where it remains the Number One luxury car. The S-Class really offers the best for both the driver and passengers alike with exciting new technologies and greater levels of luxury, comfort, efficiency and safety than ever before.’

The Autocar Road Test looked at everything from visibility and new technology, to performance and interior space and noise levels. Road testers commented on the exquisite detail and the remarkable build quality in their notes and in summary, the S-Class was described as ‘state of the art in every way, suave, rich, relaxing and supremely fit for purpose’.

The car tested was the S 350 BlueTEC L SE Line, which is available OTR from £62,905 and is powered by a V6 diesel engine with an output of 258 hp. On the combined cycle, the S 350 BlueTEC L SE Line returns 50.4 mpg with emissions of just 146 g/km.

First drive: Mercedes S-Class hybrid

It’s the S300: a car with a little diesel engine and an even littler electric motor. Wait, what?

What's that?

'That' is the future. Or at least, a step towards it. It's a diesel-electric hybrid S-Class Mercedes.

See, a few months ago at the Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz's boss of large cars, Dr Uwe Ernstberger, told TopGear.com that "a complete electric [S-Class] will be done in the future". That goal is currently limited by battery technology.

Mercedes, therefore, wants to take it step by step, which is where this hybrid S comes in. Or the S300 BlueTec Hybrid L, to give it its full name.

It features the same drivetrain as the E300 Hybrid we tested a couple of years ago. Underneath there's a 2.1-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, with a small electric motor sandwiched between engine and seven-speed gearbox, driving the rear wheels.

Wait, what? There's a four-cylinder diesel in the biggest car Mercedes-Benz makes?

Before we get to the thorny issue of a four-pot diesel in the car upon which Mercedes-Benz's reputation is built, perhaps some numbers would be more beneficial.

The diesel engine produces 201bhp and 367lb ft of torque, while the little electric motor adds another 27bhp and 192lb ft of torque. And in a car weighing 2035kg, it's nothing short of a miracle that the S300 can accelerate from 0-62mph in just 7.6 seconds and cruise to an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.

I'm frothing with blind rage at the very thought of this car. Calm me down with some economy and efficiency numbers.

Here's the witchcraft: this big, luxurious Mercedes barge will emit just 120g/km of CO2 and a claimed 61.4mpg, making it the most frugal and environmentally friendly S-Class Merc currently builds.

Impressive.

It is. For such a large car to cost only £30 a year in road tax, and offer a claimed range of 944 miles is, frankly, incredible by any measure. The reality is, of course, a bit less fantastic: during our test run - taking in a healthy mix of motorway and town routes - we only managed 44.1mpg. Which is still hardly shabby.

That's superb. But do S-Class buyers really care about fuel economy and emissions?

Perhaps not, but focusing for the moment just on the mechanics of the thing, it's mightily impressive, if not quite as unstressed as we'd hoped. That four-cylinder diesel engine is the weak point here; it's too gruff and loud for something that cossets and cocoons you as an S-Class.

That's not to say it's ear-splittingly intrusive. It's just that it should have been quieter, because you're in an S-Class. If the battery has charge, the S300 will glide off on electric power alone up to around 10mph before the engine kicks in, at which point you'll hear it. There's good isolation from the vibration of the four-pot, but you can still hear it. And under hard acceleration, the engine makes its presence felt just a little too much for a car that prides itself on huge comfort and magnificent refinement.

The S300 will seamlessly transition between engine and electric motor neatly, though - much quicker than the earlier E300 Hybrid we tested - and automatically turn off the engine when you're coasting, running on battery juice alone. It's a neat trick.

Pace is never an issue - you're never going to be drag racing an S-Class anyway - and it's got good shove up and down the range. It feels punchy rather than thunderous, but in day-to-day situations you're never left wanting. The usual S-Class handling nuances - light steering, benchmark ride comfort - are all present and correct too. It's a fabulous thing to waft around in.

So what should I do? The figures are impressive, but the world will know I've bought Merc's biggest car with one of its smallest, noisiest engines.

That's the key. There's also the price of the thing. This car weighs in at £72k (our test car tipped the scales at over £100k with options!), while the S350 V6 diesel - faster, more powerful, more torque, around 50mpg if you're careful - starts at £62k, or £66k for the long wheelbase version (which is the only wheelbase available for the S300). There's nothing hugely wrong with this S300, and it's a fine effort. We just wish the engine was more refined. And a V8.

Mercedes S Class Sedan and Coupe Review

While the S-Class has been at the forefront of luxury automotive and technological design for over 4 decades the geniuses in the Mercedes-Benz workshop have truly outdone themselves with their latest creation. We were given the chance to compile some notes on Mercedes-Benz’ latest invention courtesy of AutoNation who provided us some valuable face time with these beauties. With a gorgeous design geared towards creating an effortless, comfortable driving experience, this vehicle beats any and all competition both on the road and off. While there is a hefty price tag associated with such an incredible mode of transportation, we believe that you will be desperate to try one out for yourself once you see what Daimler has rolled off it's production line.

The S Class Sedan: pros and cons at a glance

Pros:
  • Incredible luxurious design
  • Amazing interior space
  • Built for comfort and safety
  • Futuristic technology everywhere
Cons:
  • The price tag
  • Many optional features are expensive
  • Overkill for irregular drivers
[.......]

Conclusion:

At the end of the day, purchasing an S Class sedan or coupe is probably out of most people’s price range. However, the sheer level of technology, comfort, elegance and beauty lead us to declare that it is worth having a look at one if your budget allows for it. These vehicles are at the top of their game and have lit the path for future engineers in terms of their comfort and safety. It will not be long before the technology we are seeing in these vehicles makes its way to the mainstream cars as passenger safety and comfort become paramount. All in all, these cars are gorgeous additions to the road, and we strongly suggest considering them on your wishlist for when you go out looking for a vehicle.
