Alonso fastest in practice 2 - Hungary

By Matt Beer Friday, August 3rd 2007, 13:31 GMT

Fernando Alonso put McLaren on top in Friday afternoon practice at the Hungaroring, lapping just under four tenths of a second faster than Renault's Heikki Kovalainen.

The Finn had led the way for much of the session after producing a 1: 21.283 lap on hard tyres early on. It took Alonso several attempts to overcome Kovalainen, before he eventually set the 1:20.919 lap that would remain the standard for the rest of the afternoon.

Track conditions were tricky throughout the session - with light rain in the final half an hour adding to the usual problems of the dusty Hungaroring surface.

Many drivers, Alonso included, made use of the asphalt run-off areas, and third-placed Lewis Hamilton ended the session in the gravel after spinning at Turn 9 on his final run.

The Ferraris were only sixth and seventh, with Kimi Raikkonen ahead of Felipe Massa, who spun at Turn 14 in the closing moments.

They were edged out of the top five by Nico Rosberg and Nick Heidfeld, as both Germans repeated their strong morning form.

Giancarlo Fisichella, Jarno Trulli and morning pace-setter Robert Kubica completed the top ten.

Toro Rosso's new signing Sebastian Vettel finished the afternoon behind teammate Vitantonio Liuzzi in 20th, but was only a tenth slower at the end of his first day in the car.

Sakon Yamamoto did not fare so well in the second Spyker - spinning at Turn 1 early on, and finishing up at the bottom of the timesheets, five seconds off the pace, and 2.6 seconds adrift of teammate Adrian Sutil.

Ferrari is lacking pace. We will see what will happen in the 3rd practice...but Kimi has not managed to find the correct setup for the car yet.

Keep in mind that this track is tight...and like Monaco...I think we, Ferrari, will struggle.

Q2 just ended. The Ferraris seem to be struggling. Massa seemed to have some technical difficulties and starts 14th, and Kimi seems quite far away from Hamilton's amazing speed. Will be interesting to see how it goes in Q3.

McLaren are being attacked from the outside with the spy scandal and now their imploding within. F1 politics are as fun as the racing.

I'd hate to be Ron Dennis right now. The team's reputation has fallen into disrepute after being found guilty of being in possession of illegal material, and with the case reopened, a chance of penalty. And now the team/team drivers can't tow the company line and there is obvious in-fighting. Its just great isn't it (*) ;)

*I don't like Ron Dennis. I consider it payback for all the times Dennis tried to take the 'high-ground' and report all the other 'illegal' components on other cars.
