W123 World's End - An Icelander and his Mercedes 280E W123

The Mercedes-Benz W123 is a range of executive cars produced by Mercedes-Benz from November 1975 to January 1986. The W123 models surpassed their predecessor, the Mercedes-Benz W114, as the most successful Mercedes, selling 2.7 million units before production ended in the autumn of 1985 for the saloon/sedan versions and January 1986 for coupés and estates/station wagons. It was succeeded by the Mercedes-Benz W124/E-Class in 1984.

Asbjorn Porgilsson lives with his wife and his Mercedes 280E W123 in the former fishing town of Djupavik, Iceland. Many years ago there was a thriving fishing industry here but those days are long gone. Now, only Porgilsson and his wife remain in this desolate town which is over 350 km away from the capital, Rekjavik. But according to Porgilsson the drives into the capital are relaxed and comfortable - because of his Mercedes 280E. Asbjorn and his wife manage a hotel in a former fish-gutting factory which is occupied for only a few months in a year. The rest of the year, they're alone and Asbjorn spend the time lovingly caring for his 280E. Asbjorn has always been a Mercedes fan ever since he worked as a mechanic for Mercedes Iceland in his youth. The 280E he currently drives was sold to him by a former guest of his hotel. The doctor, who had imported the 280E from Germany in 1987, wanted to sell the car after many years of loyal service. But he had trouble finding somebody who would really appreciate the vehicle. The 280E then remained a garage-queen and this affected her condition. A stroke of luck then came about. The good doctor was vacationing in Asbjorn's hotel in Djupavik and the two men discovered their love for Mercedes. For the symbolic price of € 1, the doctor "sold" the 280E to Porgilsson which was delivered via truck. Porgilsson had to use a donor W123 for some parts, especially the engine, but after a few months of working on the car non-stop, she was as good as new. Now Porgilsson enjoys driving his 280E around the desolate landscape around Djupavik and from time to time the comfortable 350 km to Rekjavik.

Yup, I'll probably visit Milan and Munich at the end of March. I know it's four months away, but since I will be there with people from my univercity department, I has to be planned very long before. And if you like we can meet at the BMW museum :D
