Tokyo 2019: Merc finally opens doors to EQS interior
Guy Bird CDN

The aspect of Mercedes’ electric flagship that we didn't get to see in Frankfurt…

At the Frankfurt Motor Show, the Mercedes Vision EQS was undoubtedly one of the stars, but the doors to its completed interior remained firmly locked. At the Tokyo Motor Show those doors finally opened to the public and the amiable Holger Hutzenlaub, head of interior projects, was on hand to point out some of its key features to Car Design News.

Finally, a peek inside the Mercedes Vision EQS concept

One of the key differences in the EQS’ bright white cabin layout compared to current production Mercedes interiors is the angle and positioning of the dashboard, which slopes forward and slightly away from the driver rather than acting as an intimidating and solid-feeling wall. Accented by longitudinally-arranged metal pinstripes and four sets of slim twin air vents, the driver information is projected on to the clean space where a conventional IP arrangement would normally be situated.

Infotainment screens elsewhere, like on the up-sloping centre console, only reveal themselves ‘on demand’ by proximity sensors knowing when your hand is near. Lighting that highlights the basic outlines of the seats and IP would appear to be only ambient, but they also turn out to have a good function too. Hutzenlaub says the EQS is a Level 3 autonomous vehicle with exterior sensors that can detect cyclists and pedestrians nearby, and then trigger the interior lights closest to them to turn them red, alerting the driver to their proximity and specific location (see photo). When all is clear, it reverts back to blue.

Blue mood lighting goes red to direct the driver’s eyes towards a potential hazard

The elegant four-seat layout is luxurious but far from glitzy, and this ‘paring back’ of information until required is all part of the plan: “We wanted more space and less distraction,” explains Hutzenlaub, “and for everything in the car to support the occupants’ experience.” It’s one of the aspects that was key to the Mercedes design team’s desire to create a calm space that is easy to use.

He also said that the interior team had to work hard on the angle of the dashboard in relation to the windscreen to avoid reflections and maximise the readability of the projected information – and conceded that further work might be required to make sure the production version is functionally robust in this regard. That suggests some of the tech within this Vision concept might not make the first EQS production model that’s due in 2022. Hutzenlaub did say the basic interior architecture and the overall floating and light-filled theme would remain though. His interior boss Hartmut Sinkwitz has already confirmed that the longitudinal, slim and twin-vent design will also make production soon adding, “we won’t have chrome rings around everything anymore.”

Responsible materials and smart surfaces abound in the Vision EQS

“What we’re working on in the next few years is the transformation of luxury to be more sustainable,” adds Hutzenlaub. Accordingly the EQS showcases a knitted textile headliner partially made from recycled materials and artificial leather by supplier Dinamica. In conclusion, Mercedes was far from the headline act in Tokyo but its presence with such a strong concept and with a new element to show in its interior – when all other significant European makers stayed away – was respectable and laudable.

New Mercedes Vision EQS concept review

The multi-million Mercedes Vision EQS concept is a one-off, but previews a future 400-mile luxury electric car due in 2021

Verdict

Mercedes will once again be late to the party, this time with a luxurious electric saloon, but at least it should be worth the wait. The EQS has been engineered to be electric from the very beginning, so it has all of the advantages in terms of space, design and tech that this brings.

For a car maker with such engineering might, it makes you wonder what has taken Mercedes so long to produce a direct rival for the Tesla Model S. The US firm proved that there was a large and growing appetite for electric saloons costing well in excess of £100,000 way back in 2012 – and only now has Mercedes showed its hand.

The Vision EQS was the German firm’s star at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, and before it goes on sale in 2021, Auto Express was invited to take a closer look at, and get behind the wheel of, this Tesla rival.

Measuring in at an impressive 5.3 metres long and with a design defined by a single bow arching along the full length of the body, the EQS has real presence – especially when you’re away from the bright lights of a motor show hall. Particular attention has also been paid to the car’s lighting system; the headlights are powered by rotating lenses with holographic beams, the black-panel grille is illuminated by a matrix of 188 LEDs, and instead of installing rear lamp clusters, the design team has seamlessly integrated 229 red stars into the bodywork to act as the car’s brake and tail-lights.

But for the first time the giant door slides open and we are allowed to climb into the driver’s seat. Design chief Gorden Wagener has taken the idea of ‘purity’ to the extreme with the EQS’s cabin by removing all the gauges, displays and controls. All that’s left is a giant central display, which gives access to the car’s on-board functions, floating above a surface of artificial leather made from recycled plastics.

Mercedes is keen to stress that this isn’t simply an electric saloon, but rather a luxury electric saloon – and it certainly feels it.

Plus we’re told that the final production model will look much the same when it arrives in 2021, so the design is more than a match for Tesla’s – and its performance should be, too. Under the skin, two motors combine to develop around 480bhp and more than 700Nm of torque – enough to accelerate the EQS from 0-60mph in a lot less than five seconds.

The battery, which is located in the totally flat floor, is said to be in excess of 100kWh, which will give the car enough capacity to have a range of up to 400 miles, making the EQS a capable long-distance cruiser.

Of course, that’s the theory. In reality this show car we’re driving is constrained by the usual multi-million pound, one-off concept car limitations. It’s handcrafted and fragile, with a single motor and a smaller battery, so it moves at not much more than walking pace, taking every corner with caution on its enormous and delicate 24-inch wheels.

Still, the serenity afforded to the driving experience by the electric powertrain makes it a supremely elegant and relaxing place to spend time. And one that can be yours in the next 18 months.

Experiencing nature in the vehicle.

All these ideas and thought processes open up new dimensions for using the vehicle interior. As part of the “Design Essentials III” workshop the Mercedes-Benz UI/UX designers look ahead to the more distant future with partially or fully automated vehicles. With an installation they presented a vision of unprecedented immersive experiences in a vehicle. It transforms the car into a digital experience space which makes it possible to bring the natural world into the vehicle. The vehicle translates scenarios and moods from nature, as well as different seasons or geographies, into the vehicle interior of the future. The user can thus experience, for example, a rain shower in the forest with all their senses. In visual terms the lighting moods and representations on the displays change. This atmosphere is acoustically transported into the vehicle over the speakers. In addition to this, haptic experiences are even conveyed: via the air vents, for instance, the wind can be reproduced, or vibrations from thunderstorm scenarios can be rendered tangible through the seats. But the scenario can also be changed to birdsong in sunshine, depending on preferences. All in all this creates holistic, sensuous experiences which bring us closer to nature. Ideas such as these elevate the use of the vehicle interior to a new level. They can be used to make it possible to experience films in a new way, for example, and the vehicle’s surroundings could also be extended into the car digitally.

Benchmarking in California.
Hope they beat the Tesla Model S range and P100D performance. Mercedes must thrash the Taycan Turbo S with an over 800PS monster.
