4 Series World Premiere - BMW Concept 4

The BMW 4 Series is a range of compact executive cars manufactured by BMW since 2013. The 4 Series was created when BMW spun off the 2-door models (coupé and convertible) of the 3 Series into a separate series.
I like current design. But this ginormous grills are disaster. I don't know if now is Mansory chief designer at BMW. Even Bangle wasn't so tasteless as this grill designers at BMW these days...

And I'm hearing the next 7er will be a genuine shocker! Imagine G01 LCI on steroids. Slicker side profile, better proportions but some extreme & sharp detailing coming! Oh, no ... that car won't be labelled as vanilla ... for sure. :D

I suspect that you mean "F01" rather than "G01" (which is the X3).

Still an exciting prospect though. VFL-ish perhaps ?

Btw - A SHOCKER !!! - expect the production model to feature even BIGGER kidney grille than the Concept. :D Expanded all down to the front spoiler lip, with radar module incorporated at the bottom in the left kidney. Expect a tad bigger + fuller headlights & tail lights; functional side mirrors & functional boot cover.

If that happens, i'll find you in Slovenia, mark my words.

So how does everybody feel now that they have slept on it?:D

The same way as I did upon release of the first images. "Solides Design-Handwerk" ("Solid Designcraft") save the highly caricaturesque grill. Otherwise quite appealing, yet not "bold" in the sense of the E65 and E63/64 cars designed under the supervision of Chris Bangle. The E65, in my opinion, embodied a character, a spirit that was very different than that of its' various predecessors from the E3 onwards to the E38. And the E63/64 6ers were so incredibly fresh.
The commotion surrounding the 4er Coupe Concept appears to be confined to the cars' grill-not really my personal definition of all-encompassing "boldness".

That's a good way of describing CB's approach. Since CB's design were more holistic, I'd consider his era "bold" or "daring." While the current BMW design is more "brash"....overall pleasing design (side profile, rear, and front save for the grille) with obnoxiously large beaver grille that seems to be more an after-thought rather than something that was conceived with the overall design in mind. Now, I am not saying the grille shouldn't be in-your-face, but 3.0 Hommage's size and shape should have set the limit.

Perhaps, I'll change my mind in person. I was critical of the grille on the 7er upon the LCI's debut, but the more I saw it, the more it made sense. And seeing it in person further sealed my opinion of it. However, the 4er is a smaller car with a much more lithe profile whereas the 7er is more stately and upright, and thus more appropriate to the car's character.

Out of all of this I'm most excited to see what they do for the 7-series.

For some reason, I don't have the same urge of waiting for a new car with excitement and the looking-forward-to. Maybe it's because of the too many cars being released at the same time, or because of the internet and the long term teasing and renderings being thrown every now and then, or maybe because we're becoming older (or is it just an excuse because our interests are changing?)

I like this new concept. The most appealing design aspect for me is the side profile, which looks more fitting on the size of the 4er compared to the 8er. I have to say that I like the traditional hoffmeister kink as I see it more distinctive compared to the elongated one being used here.

About the grille, it's controversial for sure, but I've no problem with it (more like I feel indifferent), and at least it's the regular crown shaped grille, not the upside down pyramid design as in the 8er.

However, I don't know how the final form will look like, as what is seen here is a bit too concept-ish compared to the previous one which was a production car with shiny wheels, mirrors and head / taillights.

I remember reading a quote of a Renault designer long time ago. I can't remember the name, or the exact words of the quote, but it was something like "many of car designers prefer a striking, in your face instead of a beautiful and soft".

We will try to have an interview soon with the designer of the Concept 4 on bmwblog. Let me know if you have any specific question.

1) How many design iterations did they go through before picking this one?
2) How do they decide which design is their final one - do they vote?
3) What is the design teams' response to people saying that BMW is making giant nostrils to make strides in the Chinese market but making the rest of the world succumb to the polarizing design?
4) Ask the designer to walk you through the scene where they first unveil the giant nostrils to the BMW board and their reactions.

I like very much that they want to make it quite different to the series 3 and make it more extrem, because the new 3 series is quite boring (as always BMW doesn't dare to take any risk with their best selling model). But that grille is a little over the top for me.

How much of the design will make it into production.
As with the X7 concept are they confident that people will like it when they see the production version.

Out of all of this I'm most excited to see what they do for the 7-series.

I have not heard much about the next 7. But I am extremely buoyed with what they said about MINI. Especially that the mini-MINI will make people fall in love with the brand again.
Especially after the Countryman. (Had to get that in there):D

Is the concept designed after the freezing of the production car design? Is the designer of the production car another person and if yes do they work in a team when designing the concept? How much freedom is given since the design is based on the production car? Does somebody say what to be exagerated?
