BMW i8 Protonic Frozen Yellow

IMG_0015.webp

The BMW i8 Protonic Frozen Yellow Edition - which will be produced in a limited run and go on sale in September 2017 - owes its striking appearance to a model-specific paint finish. The exclusive exterior shade Protonic Frozen Yellow shares its canvas with accents in Frozen Grey metallic. A sophisticated application process is employed to transfer the paint to the BMW i8's carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) bodywork. The silky-matt shimmer of the finish shines a particularly vivid spotlight on the plug-in-hybrid sports car's dynamic lines and flowing surface design. The special-edition model will sport newly designed 20-inch BMW i light-alloy wheels in W-Spoke design with mattpainted surfaces and mixed-size tyres.

Inside the special-edition model, contrast stitching in Yellow for the seat surfaces and centre console underlines the sporty and extravagant looks that dominate the cockpit design of the BMW i8. Yellow contrast stitching can also be found in the side panel trim and door cards, on the floor mats and in the lower section of the instrument panel. An anthracite-coloured headliner, grey seat belts, ceramic applications for the selector lever and iDrive Controller, and door sill strips with "Edition" inscriptions add the finishing touches to the exclusive interior ambience of the special-edition model.

BMW i cars claim an outstanding global market share

Like the BMW i8, which has grown into the world's most successful hybrid sports car due to its unmatched and richly enthralling blend of driving pleasure and sustainability, the pure-electric BMW i3 is a constantly expanding presence in international car markets. The i3 is the biggest-selling electric vehicle in the premium compact segment and has now achieved a significantly larger share of the overall electric vehicle market than the BMW brand occupies with conventionally powered cars.

Another contributory factor in the international success of BMW i cars are the innovative mobility services which make the experience of driving an electric car that much more pleasurable. These services are another example of how the BMW i brand is leading the way in establishing sustainable mobility in urban centres and beyond. For example, with its ChargeNow service, BMW i allows its customers convenient access to more than 65,000 charging stations in 29 countries. And the brand's Digital Charging Service has been quick to exploit - in intelligent, convenient and money-saving ways - the new possibilities in energy supply when charging from a home-mounted Wallbox.

All in all, BMW i embodies holistically sustainable electric mobility at its most relevant in areas far beyond the cars themselves.

Damn. It's still special. An absolute event to see one on the roads. The i8 has never been about Ring times and quarter miles - it's much more about what it represents from a consciousness perspective. Pity it's so darned expensive but at least it looks sensational.

FIRST LOOK: BMW i8 Coupé in Malaysia - RM1.31 mil

I recently read in Autoexpress the sales figures of the i8 and i8 Roadster to date

17,000 Coupes in 4 and a half years
1,700 Roadsters in less than 1 year

This 19.000 units aprox in total means that in the entire life cycle, (2 or 3 more years), some 26,000 units will be sold (being cautious) at $150,000+ each, leaving a gain of between 390 million (equivalent to the average margin of 10% of the total revenues handled by BMW), or 190 million if we remove the two billion that cost in R & D (twice as much as a normal car), I'm not sure which of the two forms is correct, but in any case is a great achievement, the entire Motorrad division gets approximately 200 million in profits per year.

In any case and taking as an example the Z8 that also cost 150,000 (more value at current rate), we know sold "only" a little more than 5,000 units throughout its cycle

In short I was surprised with the high level in every way of the i8, it is a great success of sales and hence also profits with the plus that is also a "halo car."

BMW I8 FROM ALPINA
Why the Bi8 with 460 hp was not allowed
Alpina has admitted it: Already in 2016 they had an i8 prototype in Buchloe with 100 extra hp in the trial. But BMW found: that does not fit the sub-brand i, the hybrid sports car with 460 hp was not built.

The BMW i8 thrilled many because of its design. For a real sports car, the performance was too low. Alpina also saw the sporting potential of the fancy carbon flounder and confirmed to auto motor und sport that it had been considering years ago how to give the hybrid sports car more power and that the idea in 2016 resulted in a ready-to-drive prototype.

The Allgäu pursued the most obvious idea and replaced the 231 hp three-cylinder on the rear axle of the i8 against the 2.0-liter four-cylinder from the BMW shelf. Even that obviously makes a change in the rear structure necessary. The car got in the episode a little thicker cheeks. As an extra power Alpina operated 100 hp compared to the then 362 hp system performance.

Classic tuning for the burner?
Since the four-cylinder at that time only with 258 hp, for example, in the 3er service, he had probably experienced a Leistungskur, which must have brought him well 70 hp. That would be about 20 hp than the unit now has in the X2 M35i or M135i. But Alpina donated the sports car a few well visible tailpipes, which probably spread an appealing sound.

Overall, the car was very appealing to Alpina, but not everywhere at BMW , the design met with enthusiasm. In Munich, it was found that the brand claim of the Subbrand BMW i "born electric" harmonized neither with real sports cars nor with the exhaust pipes displayed.

So Alpina looked even from a small series of the stronger i8 . Since work and other projects do not run out in Buchloe even without i-products, it was to be overcome that there should not be an Alpina i8 or Bi8.

Four-cylinder hybrid also in the BMW Vision M Next
For fans of the Munich hybrid sports car, it is a pity that an increase in performance so far is neither money nor good words to buy. Amazing: In June, BMW presented the vision of a future sports car of the BMW M GmbH - a two-seater with hybrid drive from electric motors and four-cylinder in the rear. Difference to the Alpina-i8: Unlike the i8, the BMW Vision M Next also has an electric motor on the rear axle. Together with the on the front axle and the four-cylinder, the overall performance of the concept car should be 600 hp, about 140 hp more than the Alpina prototype. That fits: The extra power could come from the additional electric motor. The has in the i8 since the facelift in May 2018 exactly 143 hp.

CONCLUSION
Too bad that Alpina was not allowed to spend more on the i8. The normal i8 made the standard sprint in 4.4 seconds, 100 hp more might have dropped the four-second limit despite the additional weight for the auxiliary cylinder and underlined the fundamental performance of the hybrid concept. Whether and when the M Next goes into series, however, is unclear.
