I'm not so sure if the GLE will ever be offered with a V8 which is not an AMG. Say something like a 560ish GLE. If so that will be the softspot because the X5 M50i will be available with 530hp soon or later. Just my opinion.

They're both good looking SUV's. The Merc is easily the best iteration of the ML range so far, the X5 is a solid return to form as being a genuinely good looking vehicle (the F15 was definately a low point). My only gripe between the two of them is the Mercs rear lights - this shape they're using now on multiple models looks terrible, IMHO.

Exterior wise I think the GLE is more attractive than the X5 all round. It looks more compact and athletic, with a much nicer shaped rear end and backlights. The X5 looks more bulky in comparison, especially the rear section which is more upright and has controversial shaped back lights, which dont seem like any other BMW but more like a Korean cars. The rear section also makes the back wheels look small as there is a large gap of body between the top of the back wheel and the windows.

For me it is exactly the opposite. The X5 looks far more athletic and has a better rear design. The GLE back lights look mora Asian than those of the BMW. I do like the wheel arches of the GLE.

Even though I like the GLE exterior more I still do think the new X5 is a very handsome SAV indeed, the front looks fantastic, it is a 100times better looking than the previous model which somehow did look odd from some angles. BMW are definitely back on form with this model. Except for these 2 the rivals in this segment are also tempting. The XC90 also looks great in the flesh and so does the Land Rover Sport and then the new Touareg and Cayenne are also formidable. Unless you are a true BMW and Mercedes only person then it is otherwise a very difficult decision to make in this segment as there are so many good choices

Very impressive.

But no match for the upcoming M50i V8, which has 750 Nm and 530 hp.

Nevermind the M50i the 50i has 456hp and 650nm.

Better pics of the standard X5 vs GLE.
The standard GLE is horrendous in comparison with the basic lines all over the place. Nothing seems to match up here IMO. The rounded grill seems out of place with the squarish headlights and the fake intakes are an eye-sore, especially in sunlight. Don`t know what the hell the designers were thinking here and how this was signed off. The sports package is a must on the new GLE IMO. The standard version is butt ugly.
The X5 is clearly the better design. The elements all match up

Have to disagree with you regards the picture of this X5 you posted the front looks very bland and boring in non M sport spec. The GLE has at least got some interesting lower intake shapes and silver scuff plate while the X5 lower intakes are just plain black.

Fully agree about the fake intake on GLE, it looks cheap and unbearably insulting that it looks fake.

Yup, the front of the standard GLE is just extremely poor looking.
"flat" is what first comes to mind. Featureless, with a giant piece of fake black grille on both sides and then that little piece of LED sticking out. Just horrible.
