VW Is Said to Cheat on Diesel Emissions; U.S. Orders Big Recall

There's a cute little adage* out there that goes along the lines of:

Learn the Rules of the Game
Then Learn how to Break them

what's missing is a third line that says:

And Know how not to Get Caught

* I seem to recall seeing it on a fridge magnet somewhere...

As they say in the Afrikaans classics: hier kom groot kak.

Hier komt grote kak.

That's how we talk in Dutch 200 years later Martin :D

224 000 cars from between 2009 and 2014 are being recalled in Sweden. Thus far, only VW brand cars, but I guess this will happen to Audi, SEAT and Skoda as well - as the engines are the same. Curiously, it's only the 4-cylider cars.

This reminds me of when I owned a Nvidia and AMD powered HP Pavilion. During my two years of warranty the GPU toasted the motherboard twice and there were countless of other people experiencing the same disappointment.

Eventually my warranty ran out, the motherboard got toasted once again but HP refused to replace it. A few weeks later Nvidia announced that the GPU in my laptop, and million others, had a faulty design that both them and HP were aware of. I sent the press release to HP and said that they have knowingly sold me a faulty product. Within 4 days, no questions asked, they refunded me half the cost of the laptop.

VW should be worried about their American customers who could very likely launch a class-action suit against them and demand a refund, if not more.

Yes I remember the Nvidia issue. For some reason my laptop would overheat to the point of boiling and then switch off by itself.
It took up to around 10 each back and forth communications from HP to recognise this issue before finally resolving which took around four months which I had to force to get a response. Which was "we are looking into it"

Anyway I am in the USA at the moment on a secret evaluation mission and nearly every VW I see is a TDI. So the magnitude of the issue in the USA is serious if that is the more popular model over standard petrol.
I have also been ICE'd which means that Electric car charging stations are occupied by non-electric vehicles like pick ups so we can't get our 5er,7er,X3,X5's, i3's and i8's to get a charge. Even when pointing out their mistake some have resorted to bigotry statements.

Today the papers are full of stories about how big company buyers are coping with the VW scandal. The main line seems to be "When will VW resolve the emissions fraud without compromising performance or consumption". This is classic rhetoric in this type of cases as it will always lead to the defendant being forced to pay for loss of x and/or Y.

The cat is truly out of the bag...

I just read that 9119 vehicles registered in Greece are affected and that the solution to the emissions issue will arrive sometime in October.

Some additional humour.

Volkswagen chairman: The emissions scandal is 'an existence-threatening crisis'

Hans Dieter Poetsch, the incoming chairman of Volkswagen, sees the scandal around the rigging of emissions tests as a threat to the firm's viability albeit a surmountable one, a newspaper quoted him as saying.

At an internal company meeting this week at the VW headquarters in Wolfsburg, Poetsch described the situation as an "existence-threatening crisis for the company", Germany's Welt am Sonntag reported in a release ahead of Sunday's publication.

Poetsch also said that he believed VW could overcome the crisis, the newspaper said.

You know really sometimes you wonder how such powerful and supposedly bright individuals such as Winterkorn and the rest of the armada can be so short sighted and reckless. They chose to save 300$ on each car and a few billions on R&D to make the engine cleans and risk a existence-threatening crisis. Too much coke and prostitutes probably.
