My garage would contain as many of these as I could find, that are in good shape. This car in any color than Silver or Black or White is a seriously rare thing in the U.S. now, on top of the W124 500 being rare in itself.

I still say Mercedes doesn't have anything as "special" or bespoke in their lineup today.

This particular model is in unbelievable shape. I have made in inquiry about it.

Mercedes Benz 500E. Perfection. We never got them down in this arse end of the world. If you got that car I wouldn't speak to you for a whole week Marcus.

Hilarious. I've wanted one for like almost 20 years now. I remember when they were brand new and displayed on the showroom floor. I have rarely wanted a new (then) Benz so badly.

In all seriousness... if I could get my hands on such a clean example in RHD in SA - I'd buy it, I'd put clear VPS film on the front panels and I'd only drive it on weekends. My all-time favourite Mercedes Benz. Yip, Garage #12 just got a 500E. Don't you dare buy this car. ;)

Dealer is asking 26.5K for it. Not a bad price for such a pristine car. Hmmmmmmmm....

26.5K? Must be a lemon. Don't buy it. You really ought to focus on more modern machinery.

Well that is about right for such a car, $26,000 USD is actually a lot for such an old car. In fact its on the high side because of the miles and condition. Oh the 500E would only be a snack. The real purchase comes next spring/summer when I can get the 650i Couep and M5 together for evaluation.

Haha... you really don't want to see Marcus buy that Benz! :D

If he gets the 500E, budgetary constraints may force him to forgo the new M5, and instead opt for... the M3 with the Competition Package.

You wouldn't want him to get that car now would you..... ?? .... ;)

Damn right! I'll come to Texas or Illinois and straight wo-sham-bo him! :D

All jokes aside, I don't blame you Marcus. It's a Benz icon. :)

@ Beemer... Go Bokke!!! :D

My garage would be the following:

BMW M3 Coupe: My daily-driver. The only and only

Audi R8 V10: My weekend car if I feel like taking it out.

Porsche 911 GT3: Did someone say naturally aspirated?

Mercedes GL: I love this car and think it would be great if I need to transport a lot of items.

Okay so I bought a new (entirely fictitious) house to resurrect this thread. The main attraction of this lavish domicile was the split-level construction spread over the elevation of the property affording great views and a number of separate buildings for, of course... garages! 16 of them now. :D

Garages 1 - 4: The Supercar Gallery:
Bugatti Veyron SuperSport - Split-level, hill-top house and no Veyron SuperSport? That'd be like the Playboy mansion without silicon. Not perfect but you gotta have it. And it remains the very fastest car properly made on Planet Earth.
Pagani Zonda F Clubsport Roadster - The Zenith and the End of its kind. Naturally aspirated AMG V12. Impossibly good looks. Mega sound. Never to be repeated. Pure automotive art. [Copy-pasted from previous post...]
Lexus LFA - The most remarkable automotive effort to come out of Japan. Everything about it is special - the V10, the carbon bodywork, the interior, the noise, the looks.
Ferrari 458 Italia - Ferrari's gorgeous entry-level mid-engine sportster remains the class benchmark - I may have to opt for the best-of-both worlds Spider with that clever flipping roof.

Garages 5 - 8 - Daily Drivers:
BMW M3 CP - Still a huge favourite of mine and one that I'd easily use on a daily basis in spite of the huge fuel bills [heck, I do have 16 garages after all - what's 16L/100km going to matter?]
Jaguar XJ Supersport LWB - My favourite of the large luxury sedans, having driven one, I yearn for the amazing combination of luxuriousness, engine charisma, body control and unique head-turning looks.
Audi S7 - Sublime presence in a package that suits perfectly for when the M3 is too sporty and the XJ too luxurious. AWD security for those less-than-ideal days.
BMW X3 xDrive3.0d - A perfect everyday family car - easy for the wife and child to get about in and useful for family outings.

Garages 9 - 12 - Toys
Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 - The last of the Metzger-origin engined 911s and the last of the truly analogue 911s. A collector's piece without doubt and one of the world's best ever driver's cars.
Subaru WRX STI Nurburgring - JDM Subaru's hottest offering continues to capture my imagination with the best 4 pot turbo, AWD combination available anywhere - a back road master blaster.
BMW 1M Coupé - Another collectable and another highly desirable M car that appears to be as sensational to drive as it is to look at. Akrapovic exhaust an absolute must!
Mercedes Benz C63 AMG Black Series - Seriously? It's utterly bonkers and a fitting tribute to one of the world's best NA V8 engines.

Garages 13 - 16 - Lifestyle
Porsche Cayenne Turbo - My favourite high-performance SUV - great blend of performance, versatility and interior appeal.
Toyotal Land Cruiser VX V8 TD - The machine for the mighty African outdoors. Imperious and Unimpeachable.
Porsche Boxster S 981 - At last Boxster gets some well-deserved macho-ness to its looks. One of the sweetest open top experiences around. Pure weekend motoring pleasure. The wife'll like it for sure.
Rotating Garage - Right now it's got an F10 BMW M5 parked inside it because I find the car to be an intriguing engineering achievement. Given far fewer garages many of the above cars would be ditched in favour of the all-round proposition that is the M5.

This is going to be fun. :)

Classics
BMW 3.0 CSL ....distillation of a sporty BMW. Light, precise, and full of character.
1969 Dodge Charger 440....if the BMW is a scalpel, this is the blunt object. True hairy-chested muscle car glory.
Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing....really, no explanation needed
Ferrari 250 GTO or 250 LM....again, no explanation needed.
Ferrari F40....THE greatest Ferrari made. I still have memories of the 3 exhausts spitting out flames and thinking that is just fricking cool. Inside and out, it exudes brutality, as if its singular mission is putting all others in complete submission.
Singer-restored Porsche 911....ever since I saw Robert Redford drive a 1969 dump-truck green 911 in the movie Spy Games (an under-rated movie, if you ask me, made by the lesser of the Scott brothers), it looked so effortlessly cool yet mechanical. I'd want something with a little more grunt, and the Singer restoration brings in some carbon-fiber into the refurbishment.
Acura NSX...reading Insideline's log on owning a used NSX has shown me how wonderful this car is. How I long for the days Honda would trickle that kind of engineering thoughtfulness through out the rest of their cars
BMW M3 E30....light, chuckable, and rev-happy 4 banger. This car started a movement.

Modern sportscar/supercar
Lexus LFA....just thinking about that V10 makes me smile. Its precise but there's this sinister-ness about its style. Lots of modern tech without being distracting or overbearing. Very Japanese and very much its own car. My absolute favorite of modern cars right now.
Ferrari 599GTO...the sound and the handling.
Porsche 911 GT3....While I love the GT3RS 4.0, and would absolutely covet that if that was my only sportscar in my fantastical stable, it might get too jarring after a while. A GT3 would be a good compromise.
A-M DBS....if it's wrong to feel like James Bond every now and then, I don't want to be right. Plus it looks and sounds glorious.
Porsche 981 Boxster.... A relaxed convertible for those canyon-carving days.

Everyday car
To drive...
BMW M550d (F11)...Everyday practicality with efficient grunt.
Subaru BRZ....Fun car to drive, either it's going to start something big in terms of other cars following suit, or it'll be a rare bird. Either way, there's this principled honesty about this car that I have loads of respect.
BMW M3 E46...i'll be honest, I was on the fence about this one, because for everyday driving I'd want something efficient and with character. But high-revving inline-6 goodness is too difficult to ignore. I guess this could fall under the Classic Car category, and given the way things are looking having a high-revving NA I-6 engine might as well make it an instant classic.

To be driven....
M-B S550.....really, what more do you need? I'm not out to get attention, and this blends right in. Long-wheelbase, of course.

Miscellany
LR Defender with a trusty diesel engine....Don't care for speed but would like to traverse anywhere if the need arised

Now if I were more realistic.....
Mazda CX-5 with AWD....efficient with enough space. I don't go off-roading much except onto some gravel roads/trails.
Subaru BRZ....if the rumors of an upcoming STi with 250hp are true, I'd get that.
Truthfully, if I had these two cars in my stable I'd be happy as a hog wallowing in mud. I think I'm a Hobbes disciple that way...

:D

Note: reason why I didn't include the E92 M3 is that while I find it a nice car and that V8 is stupendous, I think I'll feel too cossetted. As I stated, the E46 M3 was on the fence, but it looks good to this very day, while the E92 does look good, I can see the shelf-life being short.

Just thinking about this, I guess I'd add the E30 M3 as well to the "Classics" list. Light, speedy, and chuckable....this was the grassroot for the whole hi-po sports sedan movement we've been seeing.

If I had to get an SUV, I'd get a LR Defender with a diesel.

BTW, Marcus, you sure you're not missing anything? :D
