Toyota suspends sales of 8 models in recall

My mother's Yaris was far from being the most reliable car she ever owned.

But then again it wasn't the worst. That would be the Fiat Strada she had in the eighties. Anyway, Toyota fiasco is quite possibly the most embarrassing fiasco since... since ever?

And so does BMW, HONDA, GMC and countless other automobile companies for recalls.

Regardless of this current issue, Toyota has built some of the most dependable cars on earth! I happen to have owned several and LOVE them all.

Amazing how when BMW and MB are attacked most people in this forum shuts their mouth and won't say a thing against them.

I've sold Toyota and owned them and will defend their "reputation" them in a second.

Now this is not to say that they are not at fault if they knew this problem existed. Especially since lives were lost. BUT if you want to blast Toyota, you need to do the same to those Germans that you love so much.

No car company is perfect (Well Benz comes close :D )...so they all deserve the same when it comes to saftey issue that could put lives at risk.

You haven't answered my question.

Report: Some owners say Toyota recall fix not curing sudden acceleration problem

Toyota has sent out nearly 10 million recall notices for its unintended acceleration problem, and while dealers are working hard to install new equipment into customer cars, some consumers report that the current fix may not be enough to completely solve the unintended acceleration problem. In fact, NHTSA has received seven complaints in the past two weeks from Toyota owners saying that even after the repairs, the cars still experienced sudden acceleration issues.

If this is not a proper solution to the problem, then I cannot see how Toyota can get out of this crisis.

The 2002 Camry is not listed in the recall, but has had just about the same number of unintended accelerations, but with more injuries. So I think the recall will be increased soon.

It seem to be one of those problems which don't want to go away, and seemingly, Toyota don't have a solution for it either. The longer is drags on, the more the brand will suffer.

I'm surprise their sales only dropped a few percent, I was expecting something major like 30-40 percent.

I was thinking the same thing. To not be offering 8 models in your line-up, and still accumulating over 85,000 sales in one month. Impressive figures and nowhere near the 'down in the dumps' figures that most of us were expecting. Nonetheless, the negative repercussions of this debacle will stretch far further than the tangible measure of sales.

Certainly not a mechanical problem.

El Cajon, Calif. -- A California Highway Patrol officer helped slow a runaway Toyota Prius from 94 mph to a safe stop on Monday after the car's accelerator became stuck on a San Diego County freeway, the CHP said.
Prius driver James Sikes said that the incident Monday occurred just two weeks after he had taken the vehicle in to an El Cajon dealership for repairs after receiving a recall notice, but he was turned away.

EL CAJON, Calif. - A California Highway Patrol officer helped slow a runaway Toyota Prius from 94 mph (151 kph) to a safe stop on Monday after the car's accelerator became stuck on a San Diego County freeway, the CHP said.
Prius driver James Sikes called the police emergency dispatcher about 1:30 p.m. after accelerating to pass another vehicle on Interstate 80 near La Posta and finding that he could not control his car, the CHP said.
"I pushed the gas pedal to pass a car and it did something kind of funny ... it jumped and it just stuck there," the 61-year-old driver said at a news conference. "As it was going, I was trying the brakes...it wasn't stopping, it wasn't doing anything and it just kept speeding up," Sikes said, adding he could smell the brakes burning he was pressing the pedal so hard.
A patrol car pulled alongside the Prius and officers told Sikes over a loudspeaker to push the brake pedal to the floor and apply the emergency brake.
"They also got it going on a steep upgrade," said Officer Jesse Udovich. "Between those three things, they got it to slow down."
After the car decelerated to about 50 mph (80 kph), Sikes turned off the engine and coasted to a halt.
The officer then manoeuvred his car in front of the Prius as a precautionary block, Udovich said.
In a statement, Toyota said it has dispatched a field technical specialist to San Diego to investigate the incident.
Toyota has recalled some 8.5 million vehicles worldwide - more than 6 million in the United States - since last fall because of acceleration problems in multiple models and braking issues in the Prius.
Toyota owners have complained of their vehicles speeding out of control despite efforts to slow down, sometimes resulting in deadly crashes. The government has received complaints of 34 deaths linked to sudden acceleration of Toyota vehicles since 2000.
One of the crashes claimed the life of a CHP officer last August.
Off-duty CHP Officer Mark Saylor was killed along with his wife, her brother and the couple's daughter after their Lexus' accelerator got stuck in La Mesa.
The Toyota-manufactured loaner vehicle slammed into a sport utility vehicle at about 100 mph (160 kph), careened off the freeway, hit an embankment, overturned and burst into flames.

I drive an '05 Corolla. I wouldn't say I worry about it, but it is concerning seeing videos like that! My car is a couple of months outside the period of affected cars, so no recall for me. Its resale value that I'm more concerned about at the moment!

After I read that James Sikes is bankrupt and full of debts and the Prius does have a brake override system, I think that now everybody will take advantage of this bullshit blown out of proportion by the media and will try to win an easy money on Toyota's expense.

Come to think of it, there might be nothing wrong with the Toyotas. I tell you what's wrong:

Human stupidity and bullshit blown out of proportion by the media.

Give the CHP in the runaway Lexus a Darwin Award. The officer failed to realise that the correct action to do while in a car with a stuck throttle was to put the car into neutral and NOT dial 911 for a little help... How the **** is that going to help?

Now you've got drivers of older Toyota models, reporting the same problem. Am I the only who smell a scam? After years and years their cars started to act all psychotic right NOW? How convenient...

And you know what's the saddest thing about this? The media saw this as an opportunity to gain more ratings, and because people are stupid enough to believe in everything that someone says on TV, Toyota sales will plummet and GM undeservedly will gain.

So this is now my opinion... it probably will piss some people off, but this is not the first time we see this kind of fuss. The Audi 5000 fiasco in the 1980's proved to be human stupidity and bullshit blown out of proportion by the media.

You can safely drive your Toyota. Your Avalon, Camry, Corolla or Lexus is fine; it will not try to kill you and in case the bastard tries to kill you, you know what to do: Put into neutral and if you can't find the neutral, then flush your driving license down the toilet because you are a menace behind the wheel.

Toyota need to release a safety video on what to do in case of an emergency As Kowalski said, "Put into neutral". As most people who have a license these days can't actually drive, they actually need to be told what to do insted of using common sense.

Well this is the price you pay as a car manufacturer for a safety scare. You put yourself in the position to get taken advantage of, which is why they should never have compromised with quality. The core of the problem is components sharing. It seem as the affected Toyota and Lexus cars share the same brake and gas pedal module as well as software.

For this reason Toyota should have paid extra close attention that the modules are beyond perfect. This is why companies use components sharing, to cut R&D costs but the danger is what if something is to go wrong, the whole world comes down as cars across the entire portfolio get implicated.

I'm pretty sure VAG are watching this very closely as they are an avid automotive concern, and aspire not to end up in the similar situation or at least handle it much better.
