Toyota Update: Exponent Report on the Company's Electronic Throttle Control System
Toyota has retained Exponent, a well-respected engineering and scientific consulting firm, to conduct a comprehensive, independent analysis of Toyota and Lexus vehicles using the ETCS-i system (Electronic Throttle Control System with intelligence) for concerns related to unintended acceleration.

Toyota has provided members of Congress with an interim, first phase report from Exponent on its evaluation of the ETCS-i system, consistent with the company's commitment to increased transparency regarding the quality and safety of its vehicles.

The interim report, dated February 4, 2010, notes that Exponent was unable to induce unintended acceleration in any of the ETCS-i equipped Toyota and Lexus vehicles it tested. In all cases, the vehicle either behaved normally or entered a fail-safe mode where engine power was significantly reduced or shut off.

Exponent's testing and evaluation is ongoing. Its first phase evaluation was performed by a team that included both engineers and technicians with specialized knowledge in mechanical, electrical, and automotive engineering and involved extensive testing on multiple vehicles and individual components under a variety of normal and abnormal conditions.

From Dagens Nyheter:
Authorities in the U.S. has decided to launch an investigation of the complaints that has come in regarding the Toyota Corolla steering systems
Updated: February 18, 2010, 9:36

- We begin a study of governance in model years 2009 and 2010, said a spokesman for the government late on Wednesday night.

Around half a million cars involved in the investigation so far not extended to non-US or more model years.

The U.S. traffic safety department has received over 150 complaints of steering problems in the two model years. Toyota said earlier on Wednesday that it will solve the problems with power steering in the Corolla.

Accelerator that sticks suspected to have claimed 30 lives in traffic in the U.S.. These problems can lead to Toyota required several billion dollars in damages.

I was watching the news yesterday and they made a great point. Everyone is jumping on this "LOL" party at Toyota, yet there have been several other recalls by other major companies including some Germans (BMW Recalls | 2010 New BMW Recall Notices, Defects, & Safety Problems at Automotive.com) in the last few years. Some just as life threatening.

It's amazing that people are pressed to get on Toyota because they are one of the biggest and had one of the best reputations around.

Toyota is much more under fire since they built the brand image on the image of superb reliability & durability. And when the recall occurs (especially a large one) all stuff about "superb reliability" backfires.

Same thing happened to MB "Engineered as no other", "Superb engineering", "Notorious Teutonic reliability & being superbly built" - and then issues with ML, A-class, E-class etc

People got a feeling it was just a marketing bluff - and therefore such severe & harsh reaction.

Like a conservative politician who's mouth is full of family values & faithfulness is caught with mistress. There is much greater outrage than in the case of a politician who isn't as vocal about family values. Same case with eg. the ones bashing homosexuality, and are later caught in homosexual act / relationship.

It's a contrast issue. Talking about a certain value, virtue, conviction very vocally, and making that the post important part of your identity can backfire when not living by those values / virtues / convictions truly and 100%. People find it a bluff, and hypocritical. Therefore the outrage.

That's the case with Toyota right now.

Toyota deserves all the mockery.

People used to buy Toyotas solely because of the reliability. They didn't care if the Corolla was the acme of the dull and boring; they just wanted a reasonably priced car to take them from A to B reliably.

With the reliability out of the equation Toyota has nothing going for them.

I think they are getting no more than what they have comming.

But it is on the news everyday! I am hearing more about Toyota then the Tiger Woods scandal and that was almost 6 times a day.

My thing is they have the recall and dealers are currently (supposedly) fixing the problem. Case closed!

Now if the head of Toyota knew about the problem and released those models anyway then an investigation should be done. As for the rest of the world that doesn't own Toyota cars, why keep bringing it up?

Toyota deserves all the mockery.

And so does BMW, HONDA, GMC and countless other automobile companies for recalls.

Regardless of this current issue, Toyota has built some of the most dependable cars on earth! I happen to have owned several and LOVE them all.

Amazing how when BMW and MB are attacked most people in this forum shuts their mouth and won't say a thing against them.

I've sold Toyota and owned them and will defend their "reputation" them in a second.

Now this is not to say that they are not at fault if they knew this problem existed. Especially since lives were lost. BUT if you want to blast Toyota, you need to do the same to those Germans that you love so much.

No car company is perfect (Well Benz comes close :D )...so they all deserve the same when it comes to saftey issue that could put lives at risk.

What other brand with a high profile of being very safe and dependable have had these almost absurd faults where the accelerator gets stuck or the brakes don't bite?

Toyota needs to hear the end of this.

So your saying that because Toyota has had a excellent reputation that even the Germans can't compete with, they should be harrassed to know end?

If this is the case...when BMW has steering problems, people should rip into them because they declare that they are the Ultimate Driving Machine?

Makes no sense to me. Regardless of what a company is known for each company should receive the same treatment if it is a safety issue PERIOD!

What steering issues did BMW have and what was it? Steering wheels comming off? That would be on the same level... and then people should really rip into BMW.

They better sort this thing up ASAP or they will be doomed.

I doubt they will be doomed. Yes, this is hitting Toyota hard.

The issue will be if they problems keep happening. Just like now there are issues with the Prius.....and just yesterday issues with the Corolla have arrived. So they need to get on these problems ASAP.

This is why companies have to watch their cost cutting measures.

That was an example...but if you google "bmw steering problems" there has been some forum talk about problems with the 3 series. Of course if major attention is not brought to it, it won't get major media attention like the Toyota issue.

Probably because 20+ people got killed and god knows how many injured because of that issue.
