The Official Tire Thread - discuss your tyre experience/suggest a good tire

You're sh!tting me. Most summer tires barely go over 10k miles...My Advans lasted me close to 20K while the Pilot Sports were gone by 11.

No m8y, that really happened. In fact it hit me like a thunderbolt when I started thinking about the replacements. They were pretty expensive and as I was grumbling about the cost, I realized I'd never replaced tires previously on the WRX and therefore had no reference point regarding costs.

But that said, the '97 WRX was a sublime car. Only aligned the wheels once in the seven years... but jeez, didn't he like a drink!

97' you say? GC8 series? You have no idea how much I love those cars. On my "to do" list of cars is to buy a GC8 Impreza (coupe) STi Type-R (22b) or build one from the GC8 chassis. ;)

Yes... the iconic GC8 'Car of the Decade' 1990-2000! [Car magazine I think.] I owned a 22B once as well... no hold on, that was in Grand Turismo I think! :D

I don't know but the STi Type 22B never really grabbed my goat. Personally though I love the brand, I think at the time, the Evo 5 was better. Way better...

I got my love of the Subes from Initial D. LOL Though I did/do love Gran Turismo. BTW...I think Evo VI was out by then...f__king epic!

Nope... 22B launched in '98. Evo 5 was King of the hill then. Evo 6 launched in '99. I have an 1998 Autocar road test somewhere of the 22B vs. Evo 5 Vs. Carrera 4 vs Skyline GT-R [R33]. The Evo 5 absolutely wiped the floor with all of them! Although that particular Type 22B had a duff clutch during the road test...

I much preferred the Prodrive P1...in terms of looks to the 22B.

Aah..I've been corrected sir. I was off by one year. LOL :D

I got Michelin ps2s on my s5 I've had them for a week, and so far I'm very satisfied with them!

My favorite tires are the pilot supersports but I couldn't find the right fitment...

Finally summertyres are on again, but still just +7 degrees Celsius in Sweden.
Had to change tyres this season, another set of Goodyear Asymmetric F1 which I've been satisified with in the past.

According to a friend, here's a video of Carrera GT driven at Spa fitted with new Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires

I got michelin supersports fitted to my TT this weekend.

All I can say is that they are amazing and live up to the hype. The grip levels is just phenomenal. The TT used to understeer on the limits when fitted with ps2 but so far I havent seen that yet with these tyres. worth every penny, light years ahead of the ps2 and GY assymetric.

Try them in the wet yet?
BMW said M5 wont get Supersports since it would affect the car negative in the wet.

Not yet, I will play around with car when it next rains.

Of the reviews Ive read about the the supersports in the wet is that it could require a more experienced driver due to the quick transfers of grip in the wet which could catch people out. I assume they mean as in you reach the levels of grip, teh car starts to slide, you attempt to correct steering, tyres then massively regain grip and you ahve overcorrected at this point!.

Heres a review of wet handling with the supersports fitted to a 350bhp mk2 audi s3.

"First really wet day to try the PSS out this morning.

WOW, they are as good ( grip level ) in the wet, including standing water at dual carriageway speeds, as the GY Assy's are in the dry..............THAT GOOD!!

You don't even feel the standing water that would have had a twitch through the steering were i still on GY Assy's.

As to the test points on them losing out points for the rear getting twitchy in the wet. Didn't find this at all. I deliberately tried to exploit this trait on tightening radius roundabouts / slip roads and the balance was same as dry."

Alpina B5 is equipped with Supersport but BMW were not satisfied with the wet abilities for the new M5 that's why they dont fit the car with Supersport.
M cars use Michelin tyres so I wonder if the new M5 remain same tyres as 1M/M3.

I turned my remap back on and started powering through some larger roundabouts with sweeping like bends, where the car would have before understeered at that speed and aggressive driving, with the supersports the handling was neutral. It was a really weird sensation actually which ive never felt in a road car!

Personally I've had both the Michelin PS2 and PS3. I find they are incredible tyres, very all-rounder type of tyres that nearly defeats all compromise equations because it doesn't quite compromise on anything. They wear well, grip well, aren't too noisy, are pretty good in the wet and durable. That said they are dead expensive and I do find them overpriced. Anyway, I wrote a review about the PS2 if anyone wants a read: Review: Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 Tyres | Autosavant

I'm looking forward to the Super Sport but I'll probably try something cheaper.

Thanks for that Just_me, much needed information for me as I am looking for a replacement for my Bridgestone RE050A. On average they only lasted for 27 000km. They offer great grip in the dry, but not so good in the wet, also they are loud.

I am also surprised by the performance of Michelin PSS. I thought they are the best when it comes to dry grip at least. I will still choose them though :p
