AMS 2002 Nardo Track Top Speed Battle:

The biggest surprise of them all. A delimited Mercedes SL55 AMG that is faster than the Lamborghini Murcielago from 0-300km/h in a blistering 32,5sec and achieved the second best top speed of 325km/h!!!

There were rumours back then that the SL55 testcar had a modified, "prototype" engine with more power than 476PS. :)

Yup it did, but look at the Ferrari and Aston and it gapped Lamborghini!🙂

Also, few years later the 612PS SL65 AMG managed 31,9 s 0-300kph, also in Nardo. Only 0.6 seconds quicker...

Yes I remember that too and it had a huge torque advantage too. Dialled back if I recall. So that's direct benchmarking.

If I had the money though this was the Ultimate SL~

"desperately looking for a grip and catapulted the SV12 S, which weighed two tons, to 100 km / h in just 3.9 seconds. A speed of 200 is reached just seven seconds later. Another 13 seconds and the speedometer needle crosses the 300 mark."

*translated text from original German.

3.9 seconds @ 100 km/h
3.9+7= 10.9 seconds @ 200km/h
10.9+13= 23.9 seconds @ 300km/h

Unless I read it wrong! If I have apologises but I do recall triple checking.

The SL600 V12 is more than enough with Air Scarf LOL!

The topspeed of that SL55 (325 km/h) was also higher than the "stock", private one they've tested around Nardo. Back then it was common that Auto Motor und Sport took readers and their cars to Nardo for their topspeed events. A de-restricted, blue SL55 AMG managed 318 and 319 km/h in two different years. :)

Very interesting! Thanks. Many many moons ago I used to be on MBWorld but used to read more than comment.🙂

These are great, but also a sad reminder of how far the industry has fallen since then. Today getting an instrumented group test coupled with lap times for the most prominent supercars and hypercars is nothing but a pure fantasy.

But hey, if AMS or anyone else wants to prove me wrong, let's see 0-300-0 + lap time group test of the Valkyrie vs AMG One vs T.50 vs Jesko vs Utopia. Thanks!

Ferrari with the LaFerrari not being "allowed" to be tested by Top Gear was one of the first times I was aware that it wasn't happening. Ultimately it did.

The Bugatti Chiron and Bugatti Chiron Super Sport have both been tested independently although in the United States of America. So everyone, EVERYONE else, has no excuses. We know who they are.

But Bridster, don't you know hypercars are all about the driving experience and emotions?
Sure, we might have 1,850 PS... but really, when you think about it, we have the same philosophy as Mazda Miata.

True! Comparative tests between hypercars would be incredible! Speed tests, acceleration tests, track performance tests. But I don't think we'll ever see it.

Interesting! Also to see, that supercars from the past as potent like the Murcielago would now get crushed by sporty limousines like an M3CS :p
