W100 The Grand Mercedes 600 (W100)

The Mercedes-Benz 600 (factory code "W100") is a single-generation line of full-size ultra-luxury limousines and Pullman limousines, made by Daimler-Benz from 1963 through 1981. Nicknamed Der Grosser (Grand/Large Mercedes), succeeded the Type 300d "Adenauer" as the company's flagship model. It was positioned well above the subsequent 300-series in price, amenities, and status. It was mainly used by heads of states and Royalty. When launched in 1963, the Mercedes 600 was the most expensive car in the world. Its few competitors included British and American marques such as Rolls-Royce, Cadillac and Lincoln's top model lines. Though very costly, it's hydraulic mechanisms were ground breaking and has not been seen in any other car to this day. The Mercedes 600 still remains to be a very expensive car to own and maintain even today.
Thanks Wolfgang. I wonder who bought the last U.S. version in 1972/3?

As far as my database mention, the last sold W100 to the USA was a darkblue(/black) 6 door Pullman with Vin 002274 and bought by Quimby A.
That car was auctioned by Barrett Jackson Scotsdale17-01-2002 and carried the Licensenumber 2PDP445.

Grosser Gravy: 10 Things You Didn’t Know About the Mercedes-Benz 600

In our August issue, we took a short look at the life of Karl Middelhauve, the Wisconsin man who makes his living restoring Mercedes-Benz’s 600 Grosser limousine. In addition to being a world-renowned authority on one of the most fascinating cars ever built, he’s a fantastic storyteller. When we put the print issue to bed, there was a lot of great stuff on the cutting-room floor. Now it’s time to share.

Background for those who just came in: The 1963–1981 Mercedes-Benz 600 is the only cost-no-object production Mercedes ever built; MSRP when new was around $20,000, but current values start at three or four times that. Routine maintenance can cost as much as a new Toyota Corolla, and a full restoration generally runs well into six (or even seven) figures. It’s complicated, artful, and glorious.

Here, a deeper look at the 600’s special brand of genius. Enjoy.

The 600’s specially designed, engine-driven hydraulic system controls the windows, the front and rear power seats, the fresh-air ventilation system, door closure, trunk closure, the sunroof, and suspension damping. It runs on mineral oil and operates at a nominal 3200 psi. It was dreamed up as a way to provide the car with absolutely silent accessory operation, and it is, in a word, amazing.

Impressive. Thanks for sharing the article. Got some new knowledge out of that one.

Ha ha, old memories!

I am amazed that this thread is still active after all these years. Thanks to the guys who continue to post new stuff.
I'm a little embarrassed at some of the hyperbole and "creative" punctuation in my old posts .....I hope I have improved with age lol.

It's actually Cognac which is a heavily grained tan leather with a reddish-brown pebbling stenciled onto it. The reddish dye comes off with abrasive leather cleaners/conditioners. Unfortunately, it is not made anymore and the version from GAHH doesn't quite have the depth or patina. Leno's car has been reupholstered and lacks some of that original MB leather charm.

That's true. Mixed up the colors. A friend owns one with Tobacco Brown exterior and Cognac Leather Interior... :)

Is it the same car. I've seen a couple of six door in the metal and they both had six door handles. I've trolled google images to find a six door with only 4 door handles and can't find one, I not sayiong I don't believe you but I'd like to see some more photos.

And here are two Pullman Landaulets, without and with door handle. :)

I'm not quite sure why I would want to share my vast rear seat with 2 additional people, it's like Mercedes invented the first luxury people mover.

Ok just answered my own question.

Yeah, it was an option to omit the external door handles for the version with folding jump-seats.

Nice car but just not a regal as an RR Phantom 6

Yes, I agree with you, but I think the 600 was created for a different clientele. Whereas the Phantom has a kind of "born to rule" Edwardian grandeur (think of it as the automotive equivalent of Downton Abbey), the 600 was created for the plutocrats and political leaders of the post-war Democratic world - although a few Communist dictators appreciated them too.

The old Phantoms are genuinely magnificent ......they are probably one of the last unapologetic examples of Aristocratic taste. The world is no longer run by the kinds of people those vehicles were created for .......and they'd have little in common with most of today's Phantom owners.
