W100 The Grand Mercedes 600 (W100)

The Mercedes-Benz 600 (factory code "W100") is a single-generation line of full-size ultra-luxury limousines and Pullman limousines, made by Daimler-Benz from 1963 through 1981. Nicknamed Der Grosser (Grand/Large Mercedes), succeeded the Type 300d "Adenauer" as the company's flagship model. It was positioned well above the subsequent 300-series in price, amenities, and status. It was mainly used by heads of states and Royalty. When launched in 1963, the Mercedes 600 was the most expensive car in the world. Its few competitors included British and American marques such as Rolls-Royce, Cadillac and Lincoln's top model lines. Though very costly, it's hydraulic mechanisms were ground breaking and has not been seen in any other car to this day. The Mercedes 600 still remains to be a very expensive car to own and maintain even today.
Cars like these made me a Mercedes fan which I still am but I am not nearly as passionate about their current lineup as anything before mid 1990s. Mercedes was small for mass producers and big for the boutique manufacturer. Just the right balance of product mix before 1990s IMO.

Which country got these after the breakup? Are they still used for special occasions?

Serbia. They are not used, and belong to army. Last time foreign official was driven in it was in 1999, Alexander Lukashenko. There are more Tito's cars that have been borrowed to Slovenia in 5 years period, for car show in 1986, but they have never returned those cars to Serbia.

Luckily Mercedes never applied this aweful proposed facelift to the W100.

^Yikes! Sales were already dropping off by that point in time, so they decided costs didn't merit a facelift. MB styling hit a low point in the mid-70s imo.

The 600 has my favorite side profile of just about any saloon. Just sublime. I'm awe struck everytime I see one in person.

^ Agreed, but for me it has to be the SWB version, the epitome of timelessness..
For me, the W100 is a monumental piece of automotive art. It's not the prettiest car Mercedes ever made, but it is certainly the most imposing postwar German vehicle.

I've said it before, there is a hint of French style in the classical design of the 600 due to its chief designer Paul Bracq - this is not pure German (less is more) Modernism .....and this gives the 600 its "restrained excess" it otherwise may not have had.

Recently this rare 6-door Landaulet came on to the market. There were 59 Landaulets built in total, however, this one is especially rare because it is the 'Presidential' Landaulet version (only 9 were built). The Presidential version has a slightly longer convertible roof than the usual Landaulet.

There's an unforgiving simplicity about the glasshouse on the W100 that means the styling works pretty much however long they make the car, or whatever they do with the doors and windows. A modern Pullman looks ridiculous in comparison.

^^ The most flamboyant car ever produced...IMO. No other sedan including Mercedes saloons come close in matching the grace and presence of this car the W100. Thank you for posting photos.

^Thanks for posting all these great pictures. As for the 600 Grand, it's just sheer excellence, as simple as that. It is extremely rare that a car becomes more alluring the more you see it and this is that kind of a car imo. (in SWB Saloon form of course).
