You have wrong stereotype about Pitbull owners, every breed have all kind of owners.
Does Cesar Milan look like what you described ?
Or some girls for instance.
It's just stereotypes. Problem of "pitbulls" are just some bad owners who are responsible for their negative reputation which media likes. But that's not all owners. Most of them are normal, but there is some minority with bad intentions. Like dog fighting etc. That owners should be punished.
So back to normal owners, people choose them because what they are.
Of course, you first need to know pitbulls , but then you wouldn't ask that question.

Education is the key, prejudice is dangerous and bad.

Prejudice is a very bad and stupid thing because someone judge something what he doesn't know at all.
So I can't argue about nuclear physics because I don't know that !
So here we are some of pitbull owners, and some who watching media and thinks that he is expert for pitbulls.
Never mind, no one dog is monster, evil etc, they are just dogs.
How people treat them, that's how dog would be, breed doesn't matter, simple as that.

So back to normal owners, people choose them because what they are.

I strongly believe there is a significant number of people choosing a Pit Bull (or similar breeds) because it fits their image.

One minute they're complaining of the bad reputation the breed gets, whilst at the same time also enjoying that reputation because they KNOW people feel intimidated by them. It makes them feel tough. Let's face it, these people aren't going to choose a poodle or Chihauhua are they?

That's very sad and thing that frighten me the most.
They give you much , but when times come, it hurts endless.
I like all dogs and animals. People should act kind to animals.

I am considering getting a puppy next year and Pit-Bulls are not in my consideration.

If you believe in crap from media you would think that they eat kids for breakfast, have machine gun on head and similar BS.
Just look for yourself, does my dog look mean to you ?
Yes, they are athletes, strong, but that doesn't mean evil.
If you'd choose pit bull i guarantee you would not regret.
Just see dog whisperer, he is expert for dogs and his dogs are pits.
His dogs teach others.
If they are what media says, how then his pits teaching other dogs ?!
What i most like about pitbulls is their extremly love for people. Tolerant, non-aggressive, they are not good guard dogs, because they wouldn't attack thief. If kids punch them, they just take it calm or just leave. Even dogs who are forced into fight, woludn't attack humans.
