Swedish AMS meets up with Christian von Koenigsegg in Ängelholm and is given a drive in Cargine's SAAB fitted with a camless engine. Could the future be upon us?

Well, according to the article, the engine in the test car has outlasted that of a typical lorry It produces 20% more power and torque than an engine with a conventional cylinder head. The I4 engine in the SAAB weigh 8 kgs less and returns 20% better milage.

The crew from AMS were mighty impressed, to say the least.

But if it really has less moving parts, and is more fuel efficient, then it must be an important milestone to the ICE. I'd love to learn more about it!

Dunkel, I don't know if you remember, but wasn't there a rumor for the F01 to have a camless engine long before we knew it would be a twin turbo?
 
So far they can be achieved in 2 methods both using electromagnetic forces.

First type is the more conventional method, the traditional valve setup is retained but the camshaft is replaced by an electromagnets which generate a force in either direction, therefore a spring is not required to shut the valve. The engineers from Siemens have programmed the control system so that the valve decelerated to a speed near zero as they return to the valve seat, this will help to reduce the amount of noise generated from the system

The second type is rather uncommon but not entire new. Mclaren tried to use this setup in their F1 engine more than 7 years ago (I think)

The conventional valve setup is replaced by a ball valve. The ball has a hole in the middle which allows gases to pass through it when the ball is aligned with the other openings in the cylinder head. The rotation of the ball is controlled by the electromagnets placed around the axis of rotation of the ball, part no 11 on the diagram.
