Movies Star Wars Episodes I-IX general thread

Films, cinema, reviews, trailers, classics, new releases, and movie discussions.
Solo movie was great until the 3rd act. To cheesy and predictable and somehow a villain that was chopped in half another star wars movie has managed to mend himself whole. Other than that I enjoyed the movie. 7.5/10.

To be fair, it wasn't Solo that put Maul back together again, they simply used a fan favourite character.

Agreed, it's just that it smacks of soapie drama. Someone dies and then a year later they rise from the dead. It's cheesy.

Awwww, dang it! I was going to watch that and didn't know about that!

Sorry if spoilered, but if it's still a spoiler at this stage I'm not sure you're the kind of Star Wars fan that'll get much out the Red & Black one anyway!

Haha, as I am a casual SW fan, I'm not too bothered. I rarely go to the theaters these days and wasn't in a big hurry to check out Solo, mostly because of my schedule. Now I have some time, I am checking out movies on my list.

Surely this would detract from the character in the Chris Nolan universe?
The best thing in The Dark Knight is he is a mystery, no background revealed or even discussed just a tour de force, a whirlwind of chaos that descends on Gotham to play a psychological game with its protector The Dark Knight. It's like the Shark from Jaws. Do we need to know it'...

The Last Jedi...

Maybe it's because I'm not so entrenched in Star Wars canon, but I actually enjoyed the Last Jedi more than The Force Awakens. In fact, it may be my favorite outside of the original trilogy in the Skywalker Saga. Admittedly there was some clunkiness, specifically the too-on-the-nose casino scene, but I'll take some relative added novelty over the 'Memberberry nostalgia takes ("'Member?") of TFA.

I still think that Kylo Ren's a little b**** and has none of the malovelent gravitas of Vader or Palpatine.

Possibly, but at the very least Mr. Phoenix's performance will be a close, respectable second to Ledger's tour de force portrayal

Ledgers portrayal would be considered average if he hadn't died. Just my opinion.

How much you follow canon doesn't have much to do with it in my opinion. It's not difficult to dislike JJ's interpretation of the Star Wars universe, because he made it first and foremost part of his JJverse... TFA didn't feel like a star wars film, it felt like an Abrams film.

Once I got past Kylo taking off his mask in TFA, and that initial hit that he's just a whiny little emo bitch, I've actually come to appreciate Drivers performance as one of the best things about the sequel trilogy.

The thing for me is that you can re-watch the originals and even re-watch the prequels where some of the mysteries are revealed thanks to the inclusion of The Clone Wars series which fill in some of the plot holes people criticised George Lucas for.

The sequels can only be watched once. You cannot re-watch them again and again. There is nothing to learn that you missed the first time. Some of the characters are so unlikeable too.

I disagree to a point. I grew up watching the OT every week, it worked for me as a pre-teen fan because of the action set pieces. Roll on the Prequels, and I can re-watch them because of how much weight they add to A New Hope... specifically the Order 66 scene linking to Obi-Wan's talk to Luke... literally makes me cry... but.. whilst the sequel trilogy falls a bit flat in terms of the set pieces, or linking to what we already know, it's so far provided a proper gut punch to the nostalgia gland... without question, to me, the strongest scene in all of Star Wars, is Luke and Leia together in TLJ. Anyone of our(?) age cannot view Disney era Star Wars objectively, imho.

Ledger's passing has no effect on how I view his performance. I love his little movements and tics, his Tom Waits-like vocal affectations, his laugh, his line delivery, his grungy make-up and attire...he embodied a principled anarchist (an oxymoron if there ever was one) sowing chaos and fear in those who were near and far.

In the third portion of TDK, though he does falter, but I think that's moreso of the entire movie faltering from that point than Ledger's performance. In my view, whenever he was on, he commanded my attention and makes me wonder what the third movie in the trilogy would have been like as Nolan had originally was intending had he not died.

We tend to look back on performances whether they deserve the accolades they have received, whether they be actual awards and/or plaudits, and we often have that sense of buyer's remorse. I have none regarding his portrayal. I think he earned every bit of praise that was heaped on his performance.

Now whether Phoenix's performance is near or on par, that's yet to be determined. But considering his own sense of dedication to the "craft" (jeez, that just sounds so bloody pretentious), if there's anybody who could, he could. The trailer makes it look promising.

Now regarding the other kettle of fish that is Star Wars, I speak of those who tend to focus so much on the lore that they get bogged down by it, and I don't say that as a bad thing. Since I've never really been that much of Star Wars fanatic (I enjoy them, but I've never really venture outside of the cinematic releases), I am not so burdened by it. You can't be annoyed with something if you have no basis to be annoyed by it, right? There is a part of me that would like to delve deeper into the whole lore, but with less free time available to me, I think that possibility has passed. With TFA, it just felt like narrative re-treads from the original trilogy. At least with TLJ, there were newer elements that builds on the over-arching themes. I just felt less bored with TLJ.

And regarding Kylo Ren, it's not so much an issue with Driver's performance. It's more that the character of Kylo Ren just lacks presence. I just don'get that sense of feeling of being threatened. There's nothing larger-than-life about him. Maybe that's the point...those who want to do great harm don't always wear masks or are ghastly disfigured beings. Evil an be in plain sight.

Man, I went "full nerd" with thos post.

Today I do announce I am JJ Abrams' bitch.

FACK ME what a trailer!!!!

looking forward to it.

EDIT:

Wait, is that Palpatine's laugh? That MFer survived? WTF? If JJ brings him back in any form other than a Force ghost, or whatever it's called, I am going to be annoyed! Otherwise, what was the point of the 1st six episodes!?!?

The new trailer is what episode 8 should've been. Let's see if they can leave the SJW crap behind and make a decent movie. Go JJ.

Yes I am hoping that we leave that and the "shipping and identity politics behind" however I am open to other relationships and always felt this was a missed opportunity.

"De Wanna Bonga" indeed.

Btw guys, broad strokes of the plot seem to have leaked.

As one of the SW freaks around, I would STRONGLY suggest that you take your theories based on this trailer with a grain of salt.

It is not what it seems. Really.

I have a theory that I'd like to see, more based around the title... The emporer could be something or nothing, he's already returned by proxy to instigate operation cinder... But the title could point to something back at the beginning of the saga, and tie so many other areas of Canon together...

... But it won't be.. I don't think JJ thinks much about SW outside of what he's working on.

My guess, (if you a fan of the Vader comics and the Lord Momin Arc) Is Palpatines consciousness is still intact, and he takes over/ possesses other individuals (like Snoke etc...)

I wasn't a fan of The Last Jedi, and how they treated the existing characters (and that whole B plot at the casino planet :poop:) but this film looks promising.

Anyway, i'm hoping for some inclusion to Anakin skywalker as the way to tie up all the three trilogies. As Lucas has stated many times, the story (well the OT and PT) is about the rise and fall of Anakin/Vader...And JJ has consulted with Lucas on the film so my hopes are high!

I only read the comics when the collections hit Google Play comics which takes an age, so I think the only Momin story I've seen is the one from the Lando comic. But yeah, it could be something to do with Sith artifacts... that'd be pretty cool, but honestly I don't think JJ will take his cues from things that we haven't seen in the films. I'd be more tempted to think it'll hark back to Sidious learning to cheat death - as per the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the wise, or he'll just come up with something new. Or... it could be nothing,

I've mixed feelings on the Sequel trilogy so far, my hopes are high - but my expectations are middling. Palpatine aside, the trailer did not blow me away.
